Re: [Audyssey] an idea for bgt.
While haven't tried out too much a of yet, you could easily enough just create your own method/function that when passed the simple version of a sound file name, like punch, would then go find and play the full file name using a specific path you wanted to make use of. Re: [Audyssey] Time of Conflict from GMA games.
Well, like said, 'simple' answer - idea being that while know what you mean, I still think it's more or less a similar game type - either sort of turn based, or fully real time. Suppose similar to either playing something like chess with a turn timer clock, or just having to wait for the other player to make up his mind - some guys still play chess remotely via emailing each other. Time of Conflict from GMA games. Time of Conflict is a strategy game that can be used by the visually impaired and sighted alike. The goal of the game is to subdue the enemy and capture all of its cities. When a city is captured it will begin producing forces that may be used against the enemy. You may produce infantry, armoured units, fighters, destroyers, submarines, troop transports, aircraft carriers, and battleships. You may play on a computer-generated map or a premade map provided with the game, or by using the included map builder you can use a map you developed yourself. The game has five difficulty levels, several premade maps, several map sizes, and a range of games types from a complete sea battle to a land-only battle. Depending on the size of map selected and your familiarity with the game, Time of Conflict may last hundreds of time units and may involve hundreds of land, sea, and air units. The game was designed so that you can get by with a dozen or so keystrokes, but dozens more are available for the experience player. A context-Sensitive menu is available which makes learning the game much easier. This menu only displays the actions which are available to the current unit at the current point in time. We are currently working towards making Time of Conflict a multi-player game. You will be able to play against one to three other players in addition to playing the computer. Stay tuned. It is now in public beta and the download file is 20 MB. http://www.gmagames.com/toc.shtml --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Script error irritation
Might not be relevant at all, but, for example, since I generally do programming, my screenreader is always set to mention every piece of punctuation, just in case, since otherwise, I might not notice things like missing parentheses etc. - most screenreaders should also be able to store that setting per application as well, so you could get it to not always tell you about periods, and commas apart from slightly different pronunciation, but set it so that in whatever you were using to edit BGT scripts, it would in fact always read you everything so you would hear (not) if something like a left parenthesis was missing. Hi Dark, One thing that stands out right away is you have a space between the end of your statements and the semi-colon. You should never put a space before the semi-colon. Re: [Audyssey] Script error irritation
Hi Tom. That makes sense, the problem is I'm not getting anything else to work either. currently, I'm trying to display a set of list boxes which count hp down as the D key is pressed, then the character dies at zero and the game exits. something seems to be going wrong with both my conditional statements and my global variable though, and I'm uncertain as to what. If anyone who knows such things could advise me I'd appreciate it, sinse I really can't understand what's wrong here. int hp = 100; string my_health = hello, my hp is currently; int down = hp - 10; void main ( ) { keypressed = (key d, down); } If (hp = 0); { alert = (death, Oh dear, I'm dead!) exit); } Else; { (alert(window, my_health + hp)); } However, I stil can't get the blasted thing to do more than display a message. I'm trying to get it to count hp down from 100 to 0 at a rate of ten a turn displaying ten message boxes then a death message and exit, but even though I appear to have followed all the rules I stil get a bunch of errors. - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Thursday, March 25, 2010 9:01 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Script error irritation Hi Dark, One thing that stands out right away is you have a space between the end of your statements and the semi-colon. Re: [Audyssey] Bgt stuff that confuses me
Hi Dark, I think the concept you are missing here is called scope. Variables can be declared in the local scope or the global scope. There are important differences and uses of each of these types of variables. Global variables are generally declared at the top of your program/script and are visable to every function and variable in your program. Since these types of variables generally remain in memory from the time you start it to the time it ends you want to use global variables sparingly. Only use them for data that needs to remain in memory at all times such as a player's health, ammo remaining, etc. Local variables are variables declared inside a function which belong specifically to that function. When that function exits the variable and the data it contains is destroyed. Since it is specific to that function other functions and variables elsewhere in your program can't access them directly. This is where return types come in handy. A function can return the data stored in a local variable making local variables accessible to other functions and variables as needed. Here is a case in point. int Add (int x, int y) { return x+y; } void main () { int result = Add (5, 7); alert (results, result); } In this simple script I created a function which adds two numbers. The variables x and y are local, specific to the add function. I don't really want the values stored in x and y, but only the result of x+y. Add returns an integer value which is the sum of x and y. and passes it to the result variable in main(). Does that make sense? As for changing global variables you can change the value stored in it anywhere in your program including the same function multiple times. You don't have to create new functions just to reset health or whatever back to 100. HTH On 3/24/10, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: I follow the printing business, but I'm uncertain as to the int first, int second business, sinse these don't seem to have been defigned, also I'm a litle confused as to what a return statement is exactly for. I thought you make global variables and had your functions alter those. For instance, you start with int hp = 100. You setup a function to change this value, then is it not changed until you setup another function to return it to 100 again? Beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] Bgt stuff that confuses me
Hi, Actually, return statements are alloud in functions that return void. The only different is you don't return an actual value. The way you do this is like this. void main () { return; } Since I didn't pass a value or variable to the return statement it defaults to void.About the only time you want to do this is when your function needs to exit early and without continuing with the rest of the function. HTH On 3/24/10, Oriol Gómez ogomez@gmail.com wrote: I'm going to try to answer your questions: 1. Void fucntions are functions that don't return anythin gI.e: No return statements allowed. 2. 3+5 in between quotes is going to be printed as such. Example: if you say alert(3+5=8); it's going to print exactly that. if you said something like. alert(hey +3+5); that would print 8 because you're putting it outside a string. hth --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Bgt stuff that confuses me
Hi Dark, Smile. Welcome to the wonderful world of resource management. Don't feel too bad as this is an issue that comes up all the time with new programmers, because they often think as you do that a number is just a number and don't understand the difference between int, float, long, short, double, etc. Thing is with computers before you can actually store a value, like a number, you have to allocate enough memory on the heap to store it in memory. The value 3 requires a lot less memory than the value 3.14159265. For a small integer value like 3 you can use a short integer which will create just enough space in memory to handle that value. For a large floating point value like 3.14159265 you'll want a double value which will create a much larger block of memory on the heap for storage. While you could create all your numeric variables as double you'll run into the problem of waisting memory needlessly and waisting valuable system resources that could be used elsewhere. That is why it is a good idea only to asign enough space on the heap that you actually need rather than using the largest amount of memory possible just to store a small integer like 3. As for your script questions remember in the main() function when you call the add_numbers() function it hasn't been defined in your script yet. So while the add_numbers() function does indeed add two numbers but if you don't actually create that function somewhere in your script that function doesn't exist. As it happens you create the add_numbers() function after the main() function and it gets called by main to add two numbers of type int. Does that make sense? As far as the variables first and second you declared them as function parameters in the declaration of your function like int add-numbers (int first, int second) which is perfectly legal and proper code. What this does is tell the function that it requires two parameters of type int, and they must be entered when the function is called like int result = add_numbers (5, 7); in order to perform the calculation. Otherwise without declaring first and second as part of the function declaration you couldn't pass any values or parameters to the function. HTH On 3/24/10, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: Hi. Re: [Audyssey] Script error irritation
Hi Dark, Unfortunately, I've got to go soon so I don't have much time to go over this with you in detail right now, but I did see some syntactical errors in your code. For example, you consistantly used a semi-colon after your If and Else statements. That's not legal code. Here is an example of what I mean. // Bad code Else; { (alert(window, my_health + hp)); } // Good code Else { (alert (window, my_health + hp); } You had an extra semi-colon and an extra right perenthesis in there that didn't need to be there. I can see you are really struggling with the basic language syntax. Try and hang in there and see if you can get some good scripts to look at. it might help you figure this stuff out. I've never understood that either, probably why I've always gotten such poor grades in math. Homer: Hey, uh, could you go across the street and get me a slice of pizza? Vender: No pizza. Re: [Audyssey] Script error irritation
Hi Tom. I'm going to have to dash off myself, but I think that might be the issue really. The language tutorial provides very good basic examples of each thing, eg, functions, variables etc, while philip's example games provide commented examples of full scale games. I think i need to look at something in betwene to get the basic rules and how the elements are supposed to interact. Right now it's as if I have a spanish dictionary, and a spanish news paper, but no short centences or paragraphs to show how these things might be used. Perhaps, some examples of code which does basic things, such as start off with a total (a global variable), then perform a few operations on that total going through several functions to end up with another number eg, adding up items in a shopping list, would be helpful to look at, or a basic user in put limited consequence setup like calling a coin toss would be useful here. I'm really sorry about list spam and questions. I freely admit I haven't studdied anything along these lines for quite a while, not in fact sinse I did my last module in formal logic (and unfortunately the system we learnt used a very standard lingyistic syntax), I'm probably rather rusty at this sort of thing. Nevertheless, I am prepared to put in the work to learn if this is what is required, as I deffinately! would like to create that text rpg. Beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] free games
Hi Hayden, That's where you are wrong. Making a free game, writing fan fiction, using commercial sound effects, etc is not legal in the United States unless you get permission from the original copyright holder to do so. In most cases a copyright holder has specific rights how their trademarks are used and redistributed unless it happens to fall under the fair use section of the U.S. copyright law. Fair use generally means the trademark is used for free, is for specific educational purposes, or a matter of public review. That doesn't give you or me the right just to use the content in anyway we feel like, and provents us from creating derivative products freeware or otherwise without special permission. Here is a better way to illistrate the point. One of my favorite mainstream games is Star Trek Elite Force. Under the ffair use section of the copyright law I can write game reviews, walkthroughs, and talk about the game all I want publically. However, if I decide to rip the game sounds, graphics, cut scenes, etc and create my own game using the content Activision can legally sue me for damages regardless if I released it as freeware because I created a derivative work and broke the end user license agreement that came with the game. This makes it very messy for a blind game developer, like me, to use copyrighted trademarks, sounds, music, etc in a game as it puts me at risk of a major law suit. Legally the law would be on their side and not mine. It isn't fair, but that's the law. Re: [Audyssey] free games
It all comes down to the original copyright holder really. Some may not care that you're using their sound effects as long as you don't make any profit from it. Jim Kitchen had that situation with one of the writers for The Simpsons. True he started to object when he first found out that Jim was using Simpsons sounds, but he desisted when he found out the games were free. But not every developer is so accepting. Some will at the very least serve you with a cease and desist letter regardless of whether your project is free. Homer: Hey, uh, could you go across the street and get me a slice of pizza? [Audyssey] Adding to my BGT project...
Ok so I woke up at a rather ungodly hour this morning and was seized by an urge to try to work on my game. And of course then I got into adding new ideas to what I want for the game. It's still going to be a game in the style of Berzerk, but there might actually be something of a point to it. I decided to settle on ten levels of robot fighting, then a final boss level where you had to destroy the robots' controlling supercomputer. Not in the original Berzerk I know, but that's what happens when you get bitten by the creativity bug. Of course right now I can't even get the program to start long enough to play the intro (which I'll have to redo with this new story idea in mind), much less get the keyboard commands working the way I want them. Call me slow but I really don't understand the sound positioning thing. And then of course there'll be the scoring system, how often powerups appear, how long they remain onscreen to be collected, yada yada yada. I'm hoping that this will be my first game once A. I own BGT Light and can purchase my own domain and have my own web site. All that aside I'd appreciate any help I can get, whether it be with code or sounds. And of course credit will be given where due. Homer: Hey, uh, could you go across the street and get me a slice of pizza? Vender: No pizza. [Audyssey] Unsubscribing!
Hello and goodbye, I am going to be leaving the list, since I am tired of having now 40 emails about a game creation tool that I am sure is great, but it is not in all reality for everyone. There is a reason to go to school and learn to program, or any other profession that someone wants to become good at. I for one feel we have plenty of low to mid quality games out there for the blind, and not enough high quality ones, and most of that is do to that people think they actually know something about computers. So to sum it up leave the programming to those who are trained in it and for the love of god please let's get back to discussing the playing of games instead of designing of them. Could you let us know how you fixed it just in case someone else has this problem? Thanks. Also, I discovered a strange problem yesterday. My Alt-M key was not working. It looks as if Skype intercepts it and does not pass it along to TOC. Took a while to find, but I didn't like the solutions. Hi. Well it sounds like your going pretty well there Bryan. I'm just trying to work through the basics of creating a round of turn based combat against a single enemy to learn about the engine. Depending upon how well that goes I might put in a couple of ideas I've had for interesting rpg combat over the last few years, but right now I can't even get hp to display and decrease over a number of turns, which is bad! Re: [Audyssey] BGT Preorders?
There are a couple of games on the bgt toolkit page at blastbay studios, but personally I'd rather like some basic example code sections which do symple things such as toss a coin or start with a total, add together some other numbers and see if they total higher than the original. As I said, right now it feels like the examples are translations of words in a foreign language, and the games are like hole books, and i wouldn't mind seeing a sentense, paragraph or two. Having already read through the tutorial once, I stil find myself mildly confused on a couple of matters. Firstly, all the stuff relating to doubled short or long intagers and bits and bytes. I'm rather uncertain why or when I would want to use variables such as int8, double, or short which relate to the size of bits and bytes. Shorely, a number is a number and can be written as such? Secondly, I'm uncertain as to the difference betwene void functions and return result functions, and I must confess I don't follow this example: void main() { int x=add_numbers(3, 5); alert(Wow, 3 + 5 is... + x + !); } int add_numbers(int first, int second) { int result=first+second; I can see that the alert will write the text string with the int x, however, hasn't the (3 + 5), already produced the result of 8 for x? Also, I have absolutely no idea what the business involving int first and int second is all about, sinse how does bgt know what first and second actually mean? it seems this function is working with a lot of intagers which haven't been defigned successfully, but which work (I tried creating a secript with this and it printed fine). [Audyssey] why are afiew people complaining about the bgt kit?
Guys, onnestly I don't mean to be rude but this is only a piece of addvice. Why are people complaining about this BGT thing? Bla Bla Bla, cas I want to unsubscribe about this list all of bgt. Guys, this could really offend Philip. So what if you get 40 50 emails about it? Either just remove all of your inbox's message's, and that's what I usually do. I know it could be very anoying to read 40 50 emails, but its the way to life. Then, don't go oneday Ahh, what is this? What is that? Also, you could learn the answers in the tutorial. Some I don't read not because of people, but because I don't want to read them. Unsubscribing only for a subject is quite rude. Plus as ann said, you could put it to dijest mode, which I think might be 15 emails though not sure. Just unsubscribing and complaining for only 1 little thing is not the wurth. Why does Bryan and Dark also others Including me ask questions. Its for help and about the bgt. I like the way that Thomas moderate's the list, and I like these discussions. Suggestions are also welcome. I mean come on guys, its not the wurth complaining when a excellent tool comes out to the blind community. Re: [Audyssey] Bgt stuff that confuses me
Hi Thom, So you're saying, then, that main has to be at the bottom of the program? Thomas Ward wrote: Hi Dark, Smile. Not in the original Berzerk I know, but that's what happens when you get bitten by the creativity bug. Okay, ya'll. This is getting rather ridiculous. I am getting WAY WAY WAY too many emails that are PROGRAMMING related. Not gaming related. What I mean is - there is a list for beginning programming and that is where you should be discussing the hows, whys, and what-abouts for the BGT. Don't get me wrong - this seems like it will be a wonderful tool that will help the lay-person be able to develop their own games. HOWEVER - my understanding is that THIS list is for the discussion of how to play these wonderful games that Thomas, Phil, Jim, and the others have created and either sold or given away for free. What tricks others have learned, and all of that. Re: [Audyssey] The BGT tool is on topic right?
Hello Ann and all, Yes, the BGT toolkit is technically on topic for this list since it is specifically designed for audio gaming, and isn't necessarily general programming as some say. However, I do see a lot of people are upset by the sudden increase in traffic, and I may have to ask the topic be taken somewhere else such as the USA Games developers list or to Phil's Blastbay forums for this thing. However, before i decide anything of the sort I'll talk it over with Raul and Kevin and see how they want to handle this. However, as i said for the moment it is on topic and doesn't break the guidelines. On 3/25/10, Ann tate...@gmail.com wrote: Good grief, is there something going around in the water? Ok so I woke up at a rather ungodly hour this morning and was seized by an urge to try to work on my game. And of course then I got into adding new ideas to what I want for the game. It's still going to be a game in the style of Berzerk, but there might actually be something of a point to it. I decided to settle on ten levels of robot fighting, then a final boss level where you had to destroy the robots' controlling supercomputer. Not in the original Berzerk I know, but that's what happens when you get bitten by the creativity bug. Hi, Ah, got you. Best Regards, Hayden -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Thomas Ward Sent: Thursday, March 25, 2010 6:20 AM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] free games Hi Hayden, That's where you are wrong. HTH On 3/24/10, Hayden Presley hdpres...@hotmail.com wrote: Hi, If I am not wrong, I do not see what legal foot they have to standon if they tried to take it to court. Re: [Audyssey] The BGT tool is on topic right?
um, so how else should people ask for help. It's just like asking for help with a game. I don't have an issue with code on the list. On 3/26/2010 1:38 AM, shaun everiss wrote: well I like the posts about new game ideas and things i can help with but those code snip help things are getting a bit over the top. On 3/25/10, Anntate...@gmail.com wrote: Good grief, is there something going around in the water? I think this is completely on topic for this list, which is not just about playing games but about games for the blind in general, and this includes game design. If I'm wrong, I'm sure one of our great mods will step in and correct me, though. A piece of advice, digest mode. Re: [Audyssey] BGT Preorders?
The comments above the functions do a good job to explain what happens. I think your problem is with understanding how things need to function and what language to use, not complexity as such, because there are functions, with nice english above them that does simple things. On 3/25/2010 5:43 PM, dark wrote: There are a couple of games on the bgt toolkit page at blastbay studios, but personally I'd rather like some basic example code sections which do symple things such as toss a coin or start with a total, add together some other numbers and see if they total higher than the original. Re: [Audyssey] Time of Conflict from GMA games.
Hello, I initially played with Jaws selected and Jaws would not read any of the extra info. I had to switch to SAPI and put Jaws to sleep in order to get all the extra info. For example, when I used Jaws, pressing a would not announce anything. After I switched to SAPI, pressing a announces what is around me.
