I am unable to convert an RGB image into an indexed image using a
palette with more than 256 colors.
It didn't work with my palette of ~350 colors (DMC floss RGB
equivalents) and it also didn't work with the visibone palette (the
bigger one).
Is this something that I should have expected?

You shouldn't have to reboot. The next time the gimp acts up on you,
try this:
1. hit all at the same time
2. login in and type "ps -ax" no quotes
3. find the gimp and the number with it and type "kill "

I think the move tool needs something to hold on to. Try some text or
even just a spot of color, then click on that to move it. The move tool
doesn't hold on to transparency.

my guess is that they planned to have these tools, and the book was
written. then, for what ever reason, the tools were left out of the
final version. The same tools are prolly found somewhere else, through
menus or dialogs.
the 1.3 gimp has inspired many discussions on what is a "tool" and wha
first thing, get rid of anything gimp that occures underneath /usr.
best way is to use the unistall rpm options, but even then, check for
libgimp and for /usr/bin/gimptool. make might be finding these things.
once that is done, run ldconfig.
then rm config.cache.
then ./configure. watch the c
if everything else is set up right, (Xftconfig and such) starting your
gimp this way:
GDK_USE_XFT=1 gimp-1.3
on the command line should do the trick.

1) the AA plug-in will only build if you have the aalib and configure
finds it.
2) it will only work on grayscale images

this is actually fairly easy to do. index the image
(Image-->Mode-->Indexed) and use the palette that you want from
that dialog.
if you need to grab the palette from another image, it is a bit more
complicated. i wrote a tutorial about it here:

in Dialog -->Palettes add a new palette.
close this dialog (you need for your window manager to supply a close
button to do this).
in the palette dialog there will be a new palette called Untitled.
