Re: [QUAD-L] Roho cushions
I just hate mine when transferring out of the shower. I sink in the middle of the transfer and it's hard when you don't have the pants to help you slide. Other than that I like it. I liked my J2 better and I hope I eventually get back to one after I heal from the flap I finally decided to get. I take 4 fiber capsules a day and 2 stool softeners and try to eat veggies and fruits daily, plus lots of water. I use the magic bullet also and get in my commode/shower chair about five minutes after I have the suppository inserted. Then I start going about 15 minutes later. I'm usually all done going it 20-30 minutes. After my shower, I get back into bed and have a digital just to make sure the bullet got everything out. Most of the time it does. So my advice, would be to try taking more fiber and try going every day and don't do the digital stim in the commode chair because of the pressure from sitting. Wait until you get into bed and go on your side after 45 minutes or so on the commode. I've been going to the wound care center at the hospital where the parking is crzy bad. I often take two spots if I can find them or one way on the end and have gotten blocked in 3 times in two weeks. It sucks to ask strangers to back my van out for me. Suite 200 5101 West Beryl Ave Peoria Arizona 85381 Glendale 85302 To Whom it may concern, I drive a van with handicapped plates and a ramp which unloads from the right side of my vehicle. This ramp requires about eight feet of space on that side to allow room for me to maneuver my electric wheelchair in and out of my van. I'm relatively independent in my travels until someone parks beside me and blocks access to my ramp. I usually find all designated handicapped spots up front taken whenever I go anywhere and I don't really mind rolling in from the far end of the parking lot. I park crooked way out at the end to make sure no one can block me out and I find that usually works, although not always. I'm thinking the handicapped license plates or the hand controls easily viewable through the window would give your parking lot attendants a clue that I need extra room to enter and exit my vehicle. If those clues don't help, then the missing driver's seat or the ramp up against the sliding door might help them figure out I need extra room. I find it admirable you are vigorously policing your lots for violations but if you could sprinkle a little common sense in with your enthusiasm, possibly those of us who need the extra room can take two spots out at the end of your lot where few people park anyway without getting cited with a violation. Perhaps you could mark off a few extra wide spots way out at the end of your lots for those of us who need extra room? The extra space will need a bright yellow post that will physically block someone from parking there as there are those who park on yellow hashed areas anyway because "they just don't need the extra room." I knock over crap all the time. I have complained to managers. At the shopping center that has the cvs where I get my scrps there is a food lion next door. That is the only area where the curn and street meet flat.almost to the cvs. They have carts lined up so I have to go up to food lion and go through a tiny ass little isle between the carts and If people are there, I have to wait for them to walk through. I complained about it because it isn't right that someone in a chair should have to go all the way up and back down. I don't care about me because I am strong enough to make the push but I told the manager, what about people that are weak, have ms, are old, etc. They shouldn't have to do it. Of course nothing has changed. I suggested at least breaking up the carts to make a hole inbetween so people could get through. I'm writing corporate next. I am going to ride by tomorrow to see if anything is done and if not, I'm going to the big dogs thes if nothing is done, I am going to contact the independent living center. They really pursue things like that. Verbal, if nothing is done, a letter giving a warning if nothing is done then they will face court, fines, etc. I've had them do that in the local mall. This only makes it more difficult for me, in that I do not wish him to feel he is in any way a burden on me, guilty that he is unable to assist me, or any such negative emotion challenging his ability or desire to hang in there. I must say that, overall, the greatest lesson for me has been the depth of Love’s true meaning that the rest of humanity misses—a meaning that paralysis compels one to grasp and live by. I have learned that the extent to which the rest of humanity falls short of this wisdom is a measurement of its own paralysis. Someday—hopefully soon—we’ll all get it: LOVE IS ALL THERE IS!!! Irene

Re: [QUAD-L] NJ Handicap parking
I rarely use the handicapped spots. Usually the lift area isnt big enough but I know it's not going to kill me to push a lil further. I need the exercise anyways. If you have an electric chair then it shouldn't be that big of a deal IMO. I just park a lil far away and take up two spots. I'd rather see the spot go to someone elderly that has a hard time walking. Many women have problems with their pregnancies. I know my Mom had a hard one and so did my Aunt. I have the zero effort steering. Not by choice. The guy I got it from is a para so I'm not sure why he got it. I was told by the guy that put in the swirl drivers seat and new lift that the company that DORS uses recomends things for vans/cars that people dont necessarily need to they can charge more money. His first books were actually anti aging and improved skin and complexion books. This weight loss book embraces all the previous diet aspects. It may be due to this diet but, the great thing about this diet is that I FEEL better mentally and physically and I am never hungry between meals. The thing that benefited me was that I was eventually able to get up on my own towards the end but when I couldnt dress myself or transfer, I was consistantly late to rehab. Because I was more work than anyone else I was saved for last. I wasnt getting turned or woken up to turn for the first month or so when I was there. It scares me to think that I have to be bed bound for such an amount of time and have that terrible care. My friend and I sat and thought about all the nursing homes and rehabvcenters in the area and it is quite ugly to even think about it. The last thing I want are some complications because the nurses aren't good or they are overworked. I'm thinking of asking to get a prescription for a certain type of bed and stay home and have my neighbor help look after me and maybe look into meals on wheels. I have a whole list of questions for my doctors. Stacy - Original Message - From: David K. I hope you are able to get it so you are able to start the road to getting out and start feeling better. You have been in my thoughts and prayers. Stay strong. Unfortunatly the wound vac didn't help me at all. The sore is healing from the sides but not the depth of the sore. They just opened a wound care center here so I went because the plastic surgeon that opened up the tunnel isn't doing anything about the fact that the sore is not filling from the bottom. They are saying could be osteomyelitis but I don't think so. There are no symptoms of an infection but I am seeing the infectious doctor there anyway to make sure. The plastic surgeon is saying that he wants to do the flap surgery. They did do a test and I think they are going to start the hyperbarrick chamber and see where that goes but I am very curious about the flap just to get it closed up. What can I expect with this as far as healing time, how much longer am I going to stay in bed? Im gaining weight because I'm not getting any exercise in here and it's getting very depressing. I live alone and don't have many friends left since I got sick. The ones that I do have are married and busy with their families so I cant blame them. I just want to get healed. I tried miracle mist and it didn't do anything for me. It is probably because the sore is that bad. [QUAD-L] your college tuition
Hey Luke, I get college paid for but I do have to register first so they know my schedule and they have the exact amount to be paid. They go by the form the college provides for payment at the office I go by. I know your frustration. I have gone through 5 councelors in 2 years. They keep leaving and getting promoted. I have gone back to a supervisor that has too much work on her hands. I want her to call me and she sends me an appt. date. I'm not going back again this semester because the pressure sore isn't healing and I'm going to get a flap to close it and I'm afraid I wont heal in time so skipping another semester. Im frustrated because they wont pay for part time. My advice to you is ask them if the reason they want you to trust them isthat do they need that formfrom the school to pay them. Let me know how it goes!! Stacy

Thank you Dave, I appreciate it. I'm a little nervous for sure. I don't know how big he's going to open it and I am already so lonely laying in bed all the time. I am hopefully getting the roho so I would be able to get up a little bit but as it stands this cushion is horrible for me and I will only get in it if I absolutely have to like dr. apt's or bp/shower and then I'm hurting like crazy by the time I'm out of it. I can't believe this cushion did this much damage. I also might be able to get money for a lap top so keep your fingers crossed for me. It's so lonely in there all alone.I live alone so pretty much no one to talk to. My friend/helper pretty much comes over to bring me food but isn't able to stay long so that is all the interaction I have. I talk to my Mom like once a week and my Dad every couple of weeks and my brothers are losers so I barely talk to them. The lap top would be a life saver for sure. Dan, have you put any thought into getting a super pubic or the mitrofanoff that a few of us have gotten? That will certainlty bring down your chances of infection. I was just curious. That is the reason why I decided for the mitrofanoff. I wanted to get rid of the Foley and at the same time dont want anything connected to me. Event though it didn't work for me the first time I am getting it again and dont let that freak you out. there's always a small chance and I am the unlucky one it happened to but I hear it would be worth it in the long run to do it again. Re: [QUAD-L] out of commission for a while
I went to an orthopedic surgeon because he was recommended since the wound is either really close or at the bone. I lucked out and there isn't any infection. Thank God. I'm going to a plastic surgeon tomorrow. I pray that he gets it cleaned out and hopefully wound vac to heal quicker but ultimately it is up to him to decide what will be best for me. Houston, I've had a taste ofboth levels. I was a quad when I got out of my coma. I just thought that I would love it if I could use my arms. I'm T 7/8 but my torso is so long that I am paralyzed rightbelow my chest. I think quads want to be paras and paras want to walk. AB's want a better life, etc.. It goes on and on. Mullin Dear Smurf, While finishing my 6th month at the program, I am starting to realize that in order for me to go faster, further, and do it in a short period of time-my tricep workouts are going to have to become my new best friend. Although my number one goal is to rid myself of this wheelchair and live a functional lifestyle, it will never happen unless I first conquer this wheelchair and learn to live functionally in it. In order for me to get up small hills, bumps, or wheel on carpet-I must build my core stomach muscles and my tricep muscles. To do this, I must wheel myself everywhere I go (in and outside the gym). Because of this, it has made it a very frustrating month. After talking with Mr. Weber, he explained that I cannot get frustrated easily because all that is doing is teaching my body to shut down when meeting new challenges. I cannot get to the next level if I keep this up. I have to be mindful of my emotions and keep a cool head if I want to reach my goals. Since it has been six months, I have decided to do a recap of my accomplishments. I have rid myself of my electric wheelchair and I am knob free on my manual wheelchair. I can now fully feed myself and wheel over small bumps, carpets and small inclines. I no longer have blood pressure issues while standing up, and have gotten completely off all medications. Most important, I have gotten mentally stronger since I have started this program. I also want to take this time and congratulate Tucker Fife on standing up and taking his first steps without leg braces on. What a true inspiration it is to watch Tucker achieve his goals. Another person I want to congratulate is Julie for doing such an exceptional job in such a short period of time. I really am amazed at the progress one person can make when they set their mind to it. I want to take this moment to thank each and every one of you again for the support and prayers while I am on this journey. Yes, that is the name of the procedure. The chait (c-tube) is the device that is connected to my large intestine. The only thing is I haven't started using the enema with it yet. Would Medicare or Medicaid pay for it I wonder since I have something connected to me that would require it. The saline should be more for rinsing I see when I looked it up on the net. Then I wouldn't need the extra 250 cc's. Thanks for explaining it for me Jim, I don't use any of the features so don't know much about them. I also think that if you dont have a belly to begin with then your chances are better but once you get one it's harder to get rid of it. In my opinion. - Original Message - From: Ol' Man River To: quad-list@eskimo.com Sent: Friday, August 05, 2005 4:47 PM Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] Gut my doc keeps thinking there's some exercises i can do to 'build up' strength or maybe work down my quad belly. maybe he's right... dave c3 inc. 1967Greg [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I think quad-guts are mostly on C5's and higher. Re: [QUAD-L] Questions People ask us Quads.
People ask me. I tell them that I got a rare illness 4 years ago that left me paralyzed and they ask will I get better. That's no so silly except for the people that I have gotten in detail with and I tell them that there hasn't been any improvement in over 3. I have even had nurses ask me if I can stand up. UGH NO I'm paralyzed is what I think but like Billy, I dont want to come off rude so I just tell them nicely as with the getting better question. Re: [QUAD-L] red bumpy skin after sun
Half of my medicines have said it for years. I guess one of them finally showed the side effect. I know to be more careful now. Thanks for the advice. Most antibiotics warn about staying out of the sun while you're using them. Stay strong. Re: [QUAD-L] red bumpy skin after sun
I was worried so I didn't go out for a couple of days and they went away for the most part and my skin isn't damaged at all. I definitely think it was the antibiotics. Thanks everyone for your feedback. Re: [QUAD-L] accessibility
Title: accessibility Curb cuts are a big problem here and crowded stores w/merchandise, ilses too narrow, etc.. Stores that just have too much stuff. The big one, bathrooms are supposed be handicapped accessible. they throw up some rails no matter how narrow and call it accessible. There are 2 at school I can't even shut the door on my own b/c if I back in I cant turn around and if go in forward I can't reach the door behind me to close it. My favorite there was the button to open the door at the top of the ramp. One of mine is the sensitivity of incorporating a retrofit ramp to an older building. Not only the design, but also the location. I do not like entering through a kitchen. -Cameron

I dont wear shorts. I make sure to wear thin pants. Between my thighs being a little chubby, having a catheter and the stockings for circulation, short dont look very nice on me. I tan my upper half. Stacy - Original Message - From: Win To: Quad-List Sent: Friday, July 29, 2005 1:14 PM Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] red bumpy skin after sun I first started to answer this 10 minutes ago, but after thinking about it, I realized that I might have been taking medications 20-30 years ago when I used to enjoy going out in the sun. So, I really don't know if the red blotches I used to get were due to the drugs or not. (I forget how long ago it was when I gave up on taking all the drugs the doctors would prescribe.)I do remember that my skin would look weird after being out in the sun: it would have red spots surrounded by a thin white line (but only where I have limited sensation). I have always assumed that the blotches were due to bad blood circulation, but it could have been due to medication.I should go back out in the sun to see if that still happens. Trouble is, wearing shorts when you have a quad-tummy really doesn't look very attractive.WinC6-C7, 30 years postAt 05:30 PM 7/28/2005, Stacy Harim wrote:Has anyone had and instances that you were out in the sun for a while and your skin turns red and bumpy.
