I just hate mine when transferring out of the shower. I sink in the
middle of the transfer and it's hard when you don't have the pants to help you
slide. Other than that I like it. I liked my J2 better and I hope I
eventually get back to one after I heal from the flap I finally decided to
get.

I don't have any problems with my bowel routine, but I go every
day. I take 4 fiber capsules a day and 2 stool softeners and try to eat
veggies and fruits daily, plus lots of water. I use the magic bullet
also and get in my commode/shower chair about five minutes after I have the
suppository inserted. Then I start going about 15 minutes later.
I'm usually all done going it 20-30 minutes. After my shower, I get back
into bed and have a digital just to make sure the bullet got everything
out. Most of the time it does. So my advice, would be to try
taking more fiber and try going every day and don't do the digital stim in the
commode chair because of the pressure from sitting. Wait until you get
into bed and go on your side after 45 minutes or so on the commode. That
should save your rectum from a getting so "ripped" up.Good luck!Corie,

I had that tube inserted to my abdomen and flushed water through but the

routine done. Ive thought of starting to use my guardian rolling shower chair
for the routines but havent as of yet. On my temperpedic bed I bought the
matress cover from them and also use a plastic cover from walmart on top of
that. I seldom have an accident since I use majic bullet suppossitories, but
anythings possible so I protect that expensive matress. I straight cathe
myself when needed so I dont have any tube issues. My spincter muscle holds
tight until I insert a tube which is a plus.

  To Whom it may

I drive a van with handicapped plates and a ramp which unloads from the
right side of my vehicle. This
ramp requires about eight feet of space on that side to allow room for me to
maneuver my electric wheelchair in and out of my van. I'm relatively independent in my
travels until someone parks beside me and blocks access to my ramp. I usually find all designated
handicapped spots up front taken whenever I go anywhere and I don't really
mind rolling in from the far end of the parking lot. I park crooked way out at the end to
make sure no one can block me out and I find that usually works, although not
  always.

  I'm thinking the
handicapped license plates or the hand controls easily viewable through the
window would give your parking lot attendants a clue that I need extra room to
  enter and exit my vehicle.
If those clues don't help, then the missing driver's seat or the ramp
up against the sliding door might help them figure out I need extra
  room.

  I find it admirable you
are vigorously policing your lots for violations but if you could sprinkle a
little common sense in with your enthusiasm, possibly those of us who need the
extra room can take two spots out at the end of your lot where few people park
anyway without getting cited with a violation.

  Perhaps you could mark
off a few extra wide spots way out at the end of your lots for those of us who
need extra room? The extra space
will need a bright yellow post that will physically block someone from parking
there as there are those who park on yellow hashed areas anyway because "they
just don't need the extra room."
  (yes, that really happens too.)

Re: [QUAD-L] Being ignored

2006-03-19 Thread Stacy Harim

I knock over crap all the time. I have complained to managers.
At the shopping center that has the cvs where I get my scrps there is a food
lion next door. That is the only area where the curn and street meet
flat.almost to the cvs. They have carts lined up so I have to go up to
food lion and go through a tiny ass little isle between the carts and If people
are there, I have to wait for them to walk through. I complained about it
because it isn't right that someone in a chair should have to go all the way up
and back down. I don't care about me because I am strong enough to make
the push but I told the manager, what about people that are weak, have ms,
are old, etc. They shouldn't have to do it. Of course nothing has
changed. I suggested at least breaking up the carts to make a hole
inbetween so people could get through. I'm writing corporate next. I
am going to ride by tomorrow to see if anything is done and if not, I'm going to
the big dogs thes if nothing is done, I am going to contact the independent
living center. They really pursue things like that. Verbal, if
nothing is done, a letter giving a warning if nothing is done then they will
face court, fines, etc. I've had them do that in the local mall.
Half of the stores have displays right in front and I can't even get in. I
am not even going to mention the town I live in. Shopping is so awful its
crazy when can't get into a lot of the s tores.

vitamin C along with mendelamine creates a hostile environment for most
critters. It is still important to take acidophilus while on these types of
drugs. It helps replace the good bacteria. Any antibioticwill usually
wipe out the goodbacteria with the bad. It is always a good idea to make
sure your change inmedicine doesn't stir up massamounts of
sediment and cause a clog. Irrigating is smart because it really does take out
any high volumes of infection and you can understand what bug and strength of
bug you have. You can do your own testing for Ph. I have used a mild vinegar
solution in the sterile water but not when looking for test urine. Oh,
rinsewith sterile water after you rinse with vinegar. You could
administer other mild anti-biotics this way too. But I didn't tell you that.
I'mwhite vinegar should chemically break down the stuff that stones are
made of. But your bladder will disolve before the stones do if you actually
rinsed with the amount it would take to reduce a large stone. When you talk to
your doctor, don't be shy about wanting certain drugs available and
why.Try to get as clean catch as possible. You're getting very intimate
germs from whoever helps you. If you can keep it with only one or two people
you are best off. Catching germs from family seems less virulent and survival.
Day cares are radioactive! So, you can imagine what the b'girls leave you
with. If you have a wife or girlfriend that takes care of your catheter,,
well, you lucky SOB. I've had infections that put me in an ambulance in under
10 hours. It's like a house with mice. You can knock down the population but
you will still need the traps. Even in "clean" caths, sterilize everything
your going to use. Have your aid press onyour bladder as she/he removes
the catheter. Do not let up until the catheter is completely out.You can
trigger you own bladder spasmsto empty your bladder by gently pounding
your lower abdomen. I repeat, GENTLY. To much compression can damage your
ureters and once your back flowing to your kidneys, wellyou have an end
  stage problem.
Did you know that you can attach bed bags so they drain to each other?
Handy tip if your in a hospital where they don't know what they are doing. It
sure seems like they would have some kind of external catheter for women by
now. They havesome new adhesives that someone should be testing.
  I hope that's some help?

When I went for my dr. appt. at the hosptital there wasn't any
parking. I found one on the end so my lift could go down. Some
jackass parked next to me so I had to get a stranger drive it out for me.
The thing is the guy made his own spot on the end bc there wasn't
anyparking lines.Thank God he was nice but you never know what could
of happened. I even have a sticker on the side of my van asking for
courtisy bc of the lift. I left a not so nice note on his car. I
usually take two spots if I have to so I don't have to worry about the
lift.

  Hello all,

I visit my son approx 8 hrs daily in a nursing home
(we’ve yet to work the maze for getting him home). He is C-1 SCI. Top among the many emotional issues we
are challenged with is his feelings of helplessness for any signs of
frustration, fatigue, illness, etc. from me. This only makes it more difficult for
me, in that I do not wish him to feel he is in any way a burden on me, guilty
that he is unable to assist me, or any such negative emotion challenging his
ability or desire to hang in there. I must say that, overall, the greatest
lesson for me has been the depth of Love’s true meaning that the rest of
humanity misses—a meaning that paralysis compels one to grasp and live
by. I have learned that the
extent to which the rest of humanity falls short of this wisdom is a
  measurement of its own paralysis.
Someday—hopefully soon—we’ll all get it: LOVE IS ALL THERE IS!!!

I rarely use the handicapped spots. Usually the lift area isnt
big enough but I know it's not going to kill me to push a lil further. I
need the exercise anyways. If you have an electric chair then it shouldn't
be that big of a deal IMO. I just park a lil far away and take up two
spots. I'd rather see the spot go to someone elderly that has a hard time
walking.

Many women have problems with their pregnancies. I know my Mom had a
hard one and so did my Aunt. My Aunt had bed rest twice.

I'm just wondering if the headaches are from not taking the neurontin since
I have taken it so long. I did go off of it slowly but I've had a

When I went for the mitrofanoff, I stayed at the hospital because of the

I have the zero effort steering. Not by choice. The guy I got
it from is a para so I'm not sure why he got it. I was told by the guy
that put in the swirl drivers seat and new lift that the company that DORS uses
recomends things for vans/cars that people don’t necessarily need to they can
charge more money. Not all paras need lower floors. I can use my
arms well since I am a para and find the zero effort steering is more
difficult. Just barely touching the wheel makes the van move quite a
bit. I am getting used to it though but it's not fun on windy days at
all.

instant messenger. I did however meet a devotee through disabled united
that was actually really nice. He had medical problems when he was
young. I don’t know if that is why but I emailed back and forth with him
and he seems to be one of the few that is nice. We decided to be pen pals
since he is in Denver and I'm in MD and he is Jewish and wants to find someone
also Jewish. Not all of them have bad intentions its just that it is
difficult to figure out which ones are good and frankly I'd rather just stay

Perricones diet "The Perricone Weight loss Diet" for about 2
months. The number of supplements is pretty significant but the
way he teaches you to eat is so healthy, will help keep you or help you
attain a healthy weight and is such a good diet that your skin is
more durable and less susceptible to problems. His first books
were actually anti aging and improved skin and complexion
books. This weight loss book embraces all the previous diet
aspects. I have a 2 year old pressure sore on my outer ankle
bone that is finally healing. It may be due to this diet but,
the great thing about this diet is that I FEEL better mentally and
physically and I am never hungry between meals. I am 44 and it
is the best lifestyle I have ever encountered. I used to do
Ironman Qualifiers. If I had known about this lifestyle and way of
eating then, my performance WOULD definitely have been better.
I know many people with SCI are looking for good, healthy and
satisfying ways to eat. This book may help you: http://www.nvperriconemd.com/perricone-weight-loss-diet.htm.

Hi Dave,

How deep and big was your sore. Mine is not very big as it is
deep. They are definatly going to be doing some muscle reconstruction in
there. I have to admit I'm nervous. I'm scared about going into a
rehab hospital around here. The care I hear is a lot worse than when I was
there and then it was terrible. The thing that benefited me was that I was
eventually able to get up on my own towards the end but when I couldn’t dress
myself or transfer, I was consistantly late to rehab. Because I was more
work than anyone else I was saved for last. I wasn’t getting turned or
woken up to turn for the first month or so when I was there. It scares me
to think that I have to be bed bound for such an amount of time and have that
terrible care. My friend and I sat and thought about all the nursing homes
and rehabvcenters in the area and it is quite ugly to even think about it.
The last thing I want are some complications because the nurses aren't good or
they are overworked. I'm thinking of asking to get a prescription for a
certain type of bed and stay home and have my neighbor help look after me and
maybe look into meals on wheels. I have a whole list of questions for my
doctors.

I had the sore operated on today. He opened the hole to the tunnel, cleaned

I sleep in a hospital bed, only because I can't afford a big girl
bed. The one I had wasn't a good height for transfers and I felt more
comfortable having the rails to pull myself to get dressed. Now Im great at
rolling and want a bigger bed. I also pull the covers over my head while
I'm sleeping when it's cold. I used to not be able to breath when I did
that but love to sleep that way now.

blankets over my head. As long as my ears were cold, I felt cold. So I slept
with a fleace hat on. It helped a lot. That way I could use fewer blankets,
yet keep my head and ears warm. I might try that tonight. That way I can
keep my ears warm, but sleep with just a thin blanket.

time. I am hopefully getting the roho so I would be able to get up a
little bit but as it stands this cushion is horrible for me and I will only get
in it if I absolutely have to like dr. apt's or bp/shower and then I'm hurting
like crazy by the time I'm out of it. I can't believe this cushion did
this much damage. I also might be able to get money for a lap top so keep
your fingers crossed for me. It's so lonely in there all
alone.I live alone so pretty much no one to talk to. My
friend/helper pretty much comes over to bring me food but isn't able to stay
long so that is all the interaction I have. I talk to my Mom like once a
week and my Dad every couple of weeks and my brothers are losers so I barely
talk to them. The lap top would be a life saver for sure.

I went to an orthopedic surgeon because he was recommended since the wound
is either really close or at the bone. I lucked out and there isn't any
infection. Thank God. I'm going to a plastic surgeon tomorrow.
I pray that he gets it cleaned out and hopefully wound vac to heal quicker but
ultimately it is up to him to decide what will be best for me. I hear that
he has dealt with this type of wound before so I feel secure going to him. I
have been in bed for a week except for my bowel program and it has only gotten
03 cm better. At this rate its going to be like a year before I
heal. I am praying and crossing my fingers. Thanks for your concern

They gave me a deep contour 3 plus years ago when I came home. I hated it
because I had issues getting the board under my butt. They gave me a J2 instead

the other day. I notice that it does give added cushion. I'm hoping that
it will help. I can always get right off of it when I get home. If
it comes to an issue that I need to write a paper, I can always write it out by

  Hi Stacy,

Is the sore in a area where skin touches skin? or is it where skin
touches the cushion? Keeping it dryshould help if it's skin

I hope you can get it started healing before school starts. Stay

Dear
Smurf,
While finishing my 6th month at the
program, I am starting to realize that in order for me to go
faster, further, and do it in a short period of time-my tricep
workouts are going to have to become my new best friend.
Although my number one goal is to rid myself of this wheelchair
and live a functional lifestyle, it will never happen unless I
first conquer this wheelchair and learn to live functionally in
it. In order for me to get up small hills, bumps, or wheel
on carpet-I must build my core stomach muscles and my tricep
muscles. To do this, I must wheel myself everywhere I go
(in and outside the gym). Because of this, it has made it
a very frustrating month. After talking with Mr.
Weber, he explained that I cannot get frustrated easily because
all that is doing is teaching my body to shut down when meeting
new challenges. I cannot get to the next level if I keep
this up. I have to be mindful of my emotions and keep a
cool head if I want to reach my goals.
Since it has been six months, I
have decided to do a recap of my accomplishments. I have
rid myself of my electric wheelchair and I am knob free on my
manual wheelchair. I can now fully feed myself and wheel
over small bumps, carpets and small inclines. I no longer have
blood pressure issues while standing up, and have gotten
completely off all medications. Most important, I
have gotten mentally stronger since I have started this
program.
I also want to take this time
and congratulate Tucker Fife on standing up and taking his first
steps without leg braces on. What a true inspiration it is
to watch Tucker achieve his goals.
Another person I want to
congratulate is Julie for doing such an exceptional job in such
a short period of time. I really am amazed at the progress
one person can make when they set their mind to it.

I want to take this
moment to thank each and every one of you again for the support
and prayers while I am on this journey. I made a personal

Yes, that is the name of the procedure. The chait (c-tube) is
the device that is connected to my large intestine. The only thing is I
haven't started using the enema with it yet. Would Medicare or Medicaid
pay for it I wonder since I have something connected to me that would require
it. The saline should be more for rinsing I see when I looked it up on the
net. Then I wouldn't need the extra 250 cc's.

Hi Rob,

I moved out on my own from rehab about 4 years ago. I was 28 when I
did it, but the first thing I did was try to locate accessible housing, I
contacted HUD so I could get assistance, and I also contacted those here that
control the WAIVER program. That covers attendant care to get help with
dressing, bathing, errands, cleaning, etc. If you have any questions or want
some advice I'd be glad to help you out. What state are you in?

hang it on my shower curtain rod (my toilet/shower chair is in there the bars in

FYI, I ran into some difficulty when my local supplier started using a
knock off of the Magic Bullet. It had the active ingredient, but did not
work effectively for me. In fact, it ended up causing severe bowel
difficulty. I tried Enemeez and even had my doctor prescribe a liquid
enema using 30 mg of bisacodyl and neither of these work. I was
relegated to paying the high price when the Magic Bullet was not being
produced and which are happy to see it finally in production once again.
I guess I am addicted. Lately I have been using what my doctor
prescribed (a small dose of go lightly [spelling]) and it has shortened my
bowel program considerably. I had to experiment with the dosage, but
finally have my program much more under control and am able to get back out
into the public more often.Billy t crook

Hi Stacy, Mark is correct. You do not have to be
working, it just makes the plan much easier to write and justify. From what I
understand is if your business plan is solid and you can show income potential

you pay the monthly van payment to them with your earned income.

partner, Ivan Salaverry is fighting on Ultimate Fighting Championship Live.
Tuff matchup as he is fighting a 7 time champion. It should be a
  blast.

I do have a huge feeling of accomplishment and a

One thing that I am personally proud of is
  dreaming ofthis mobile coaching idea,
planning for it, believing I could do it,

andmaking my dreams become reality. 5+ years, 600+ emails, at least 8
revisions of my plan, hundreds of phone calls, miles of red tape later and
here I am.back in the fast lane of life.

It is so tuff to explain the feeling in words,
but like Tony once said "it feels like being released from prison".

believe you would miss by not waking up one day ..is "Life".

If it has been pre approved it shouldnt be a
problem for the newDVR councilorto go over. With you already
having a van they should completely fund/grant the modifications at no cost to
you without to much hassle. You should not have to pay back any $$ for the

I use bank of america. Free online checking. Once I set up my
payments it's only a matter of typing in the amount that I want to pay and
clicking the pay button. I can even have my check sent to my land lord.
It's so incredibly easy it's crazy. They are polite if I have to call or
go in as well. Oh and if you have direct deposit checking is free as
well. Best thing I ever did after being disgusted with the 3 banks I have
had prior.

With bank of america they give you a key chain debit card. I gave it to my

Hey QG,

How you all manage your Bank accounts. They need signatures on
many things.

I can write using an "universal cuff" but the writing is never
the same style.

Would using a mouthstick help?

Now I have to keep money on others (brother) name. I wish, I
could keep my money in my own account. Anybody has experience
?

Any input will be appreciated.

Please take care :-)

done electronically--no signatures were needed anywhere! It was
caught early by American Express so nothing of mine was damaged.
Bank of America will get the biggest loss. Plus she filed a tax
return and had the return put electronically into a checking account that
my attendant had opened with Bank of America, $4700. The IRS did
not even notice that I had not filed a return in 20 years! My father
had a few words for them! The weekend the police were set up to
arrest her-the night before she had given me her 2 weeks notice! I
thought she was going to skip town! My regular attendant was set to
come in and work after they had her in custody. She, the guilty party, was
not there when the police were here, so they were going to her apartment
to get her. They no sooner leave than she calls asking if I need her
to come work!I said no, but both me and my attendant were nervous
wrecks! At least we knew she was home!In about 30 minutes the
officer called and said they had her.Basically this is all to say
noone cares about names or signatures anymore. Another attendant put white
out over a name and wrote hers in and took a lady's rent money!. My
attendants forge my and another guys name all the time on time sheets and
many other docuents. These are gals that have worked for me
  for a long time--years. The other one I don't trust. I'm

don't know if the red blotches I used to get were due to the drugs or not.
(I forget how long ago it was when I gave up on taking all the drugs the
doctors would prescribe.)I do remember that my skin would look weird
after being out in the sun: it would have red spots surrounded by a thin
white line (but only where I have limited sensation). I have always
assumed that the blotches were due to bad blood circulation, but it could
have been due to medication.I should go back out in the sun to see if
