Re: Assistance re:scam

2024-04-17 Thread Alan B
In addition to previous comment, know that OpenOffice and OpenOffice
volunteer support are free.

However you must access the correct websites, the actual OpenOffice
websites, to use them

The OpenOffice website is https://www.openoffice.org/

OpenOffice support options are at
https://www.openoffice.org/support/index.html#community-support. This page
provides links to the free user support communities.

You will notice, none of these pages require payment to use them.

If you do download OpenOffice from the official website there will be a
prompt asking for a donation. That prompt DOES NOT require a donation to be
able to perform the download.

Re: Date Format error in Spreadsheet

2024-01-15 Thread Alan B
Ctrl+Z at the right time also creates the entry as a date.

Type "1/2/". When the 2nd "/" is typed the 1/2 becomes ½.
Immediately type Ctrl+Z and ½ reverts back to 1/2.
Now type /2024 and complete the cell entry.
The date will be correctly entered as "1/2/2024".

Re: please advice

2023-11-15 Thread Alan B
If you mean that the worksheet should appear as an empty page with no
gridlines and any tabs should look that way too, then...

1. Use the Tools>Options... menu
2. Expand the OpenOffice Calc branch
3. Select the "View" options
4. Untick the "Grid lines" item
5. Click "OK"

This change applies to every worksheet and every tab of every worksheet.

Re: Software support

2023-11-08 Thread Alan B
Gemma,

Whatever type of computer is being used, Windows or Mac, will have
accessibility options like screen magnification, high contrast text and
borders, etc.

If the computer's accessibility options are used then every program used on
the computer will have the selected options applied. So every program would
be zoomed, or have larger text, or higher contrast text or all of it if all
of it was selected.

If the only interest is to increase the size of the worksheet's cells and
their contents, not the menus, not anything else, then the zoom feature for
the worksheet does that. Zoom is found under the View menu and the
controls at the bottom right corner of the Calc window.

Re: Can't open files

2023-07-20 Thread Alan B
A couple of questions, Linda

#1 Are you using Windows?

#2 To open files do you find the file you want to open and double-click it?

If yes to both and the file doesn't open then right-click the file, select
the "Open with" option, and then select the correct program to open the
file. After having done this, double click to open the file.

Re: OpenOffice.org - Windows 11 Compatibility

2023-06-30 Thread Alan B
Per the OO website, the current version is Windows 11 compatible.
https://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/source/sys_reqs_aoo41.html

I have seen some reports warning against using the Microsoft Store version
because of some broken feature issues. For that reason I suggest
downloading the latest version from the Apache OO website.
https://www.openoffice.org/

The 3.4 version only lists compatibility through Windows 8. If problems
are encountered with it on W11, rather than fight to "make it work" on W11
it would be simpler to upgrade to the known compatible version.

You mention you're using a Mac.

If it is set to do backups, then check in Time Machine for your file.

Re: How can I waterproof my document

2023-06-26 Thread Alan B
Working from what you ask, "I don't want others to edit my book while they
are viewing it," The first option that comes to mind is a secure PDF.

OO can create a secure PDF via "File > Export as PDF..."

The "PDF Options" dialog will open.

Select the "Security" tab.
Click the "Set Passwords..." button.

The "Set passwords" dialog will open with options for two types of
passwords. One password is to allow opening the PDF. That's not the one to
use. The "Set permission password" is the one to use.

For the "Set permission password" put a password in the "Password" field
and repeat it in the "Confirm" field.
Click the "OK" button to return to the "PDF Options" dialog box.
Tick the "Not permitted" option in the "Changes" section on the right side
of the Options dialog box.
... you may also want to disable copying text / images from the PDF into
another file, untick "Enable copying of content" to prevent copying from
the PDF
Now click the "Export" button.

The new PDF can be opened without a password but cannot be edited in a PDF
editor without knowing the "permission password." So don't make the
permission password simple. NOTE: this permission password only applies to
the PDF. It has NOTHING to do with the .odt file.

Whoever receives the PDF can open and read it at will but cannot edit it
(and cannot copy from it if the "Enable copying of content" option was
unticked). Even if the file is copied, the copy will still have the
permission password in it so the copy can't be edited either.

By doing this the file you send cannot be edited by the recipient and
copies of the file cannot be edited.

Keep in mind there are many ways to create an editable file from a PDF. But
the file you send and any copies made cannot be changed.

Re: Small letter

2023-05-18 Thread Alan B
Hello Darrell,

First a caution, this is a public mailing list with a public archive. The
personal details in your email are "saved" on the Internet. Suggest don't
put addresses or phone numbers in future messages.

As to "I get a small letter in the upper left hand corner..." I'm trying to
understand.

1. by "small letter" do you mean that when you begin typing the letter on
screen is small and so is difficult to read?

2. by "small letter" do you mean lower case letter, as in "a" vs "A", and
is the small letter always there whenever a new document is started?

If #1 there are several things that can affect the apparent size of the
letter.

1.a. Zoom setting in Writer - sets how much of the Writer window is filled
by the document. Zoom in more and the apparent size of the letters
increases. Via the menu View>Zoom.
1.b. Font size (only applies to the current Writer document) - the default
should be 12. That is generally easily legible on my screens and is a
common font size for printed documents. If the size is less than 12 that
may be part of your problem. Increase the font size to 12.
1.c. Font scaling (applies to all fonts shown on the computer screen no
matter what program) - affects how the fonts display on the screen and is
used to make them larger than they would look otherwise. ALL fonts on
screen are scaled. The scaling does not affect the size of printed fonts.
If your screen is high resolution then the letters will appear smaller than
on a same size screen with a lower resolution. Font scaling allows
adjusting for that. It is usually in the "Accessibility" section of
settings.

If #2 then I suspect the default template has been changed. Fixing that
will require modifying the default template to remove the pesky letter that
has been added to it.

Earlier versions and versions for various computer operating systems are

Here is a Document Foundation, LibreOffice's publisher, link that lists the
Calc functions. Unfortunately I don't see indication of which versions the
defined function is in or which version it was first available.
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Calc_Functions/List_of_Functions

Please name a function in your sheet that is not working, the version of
Calc you're using, and the message being displayed in the cell that has the
error. That would help investigating the problem and finding an answer.

Re: Help Making Sense of .csv Files

2023-02-09 Thread Alan B
Hello Linda,

I opened the file, "Active Provider Directory 20220902", in Calc. The
columns I'm seeing with lots of spaces are additional details like
ADDRESS2, OTHER SPECIALTIES, OTHER LANGUAGES. Not a surprise they wouldn't
be completed.

Things you are interested in, like speciality and location, have values for
every row of the file I imported.

Columns, PROVIDER NAME, ADDRESS 1, CITY, STATE, ZIP, COUNTY, PROVIDER TYPE,
PRIMARY SPECIALTY, OTHER SPECIALTIES, CONTRACTS and a few more have values
in every row of the sheet.

Using Calc "AutoFilter" it is a few clicks to filter by CITY and PRIMARY
SPECIALTY, for example.
e.g. filter for city = "Athens" and primary speciality = "Allergy and
Immunology". Applying those filters gets four results out of the 270,993
rows in the file.
Not sure how you're opening the file.

If you're not opening the file in Calc, that's step 1.

#1 Find the downloaded file and right-click it then click "open with Calc"
or "Calc" on the menu. If that's not there, look for the "Open with" option
on the menu and click that. The submenu that opens will have Calc on the
list. Click it.

#2 Calc will present a "Text Import" dialog before the data is displayed in
the spreadsheet. In that dialog set "Separator Options" to "Separated by"
and be certain the ONLY option checked is "Comma". Then click "OK"

#3 Now that the file is open before you click Data > AutoFilter on the
menu. The column titles on the first row will now have little downward
pointing triangles next to each title. Click on those as needed to filter
the list to see only what you want.

VERY IMPORTANT step saver if you want to refer to the file again. The file
is still .csv. AutoFilter cannot be saved in .csv.
#4 Click File > Save on the menu. A warning about "Confirm File Format"
will appear. Click the "Use ODF Format" button and then click the "Save"
button.

Next time you want to use the file, open the spreadsheet file (ODF format
file), not the .csv file, and your AutoFilter will still be in place and
ready to use.

Re: Windows 10

According to Apache's System Requirements page for OpenOffice, yes 4.1.9
can be used on Windows.
https://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/source/sys_reqs_aoo41.html

You may upgrade to the latest version if you wish.

Strongly recommend check the specs of your laptop vs Windows 10 system
requirements. Personally I wouldn't use Windows 10 on anything less than an
i3, with SSD and 8GB RAM.

Re: Forgot Password

2022-09-28 Thread Alan B
You may also try an OpenOffice password cracker.

A web search with the term "openoffice password cracker" turns up quite a
few hits. It will be brute force cracking, in other words make a password,
try it, if fails try another, and so on. But the password cracker
automatically creates and tries the passwords so you don't have to.

If you really need the document AND the password's not too complex, AND you
have some idea its length, then running the password cracker for a few
minutes to several days until it finds the password will get you back into
the document.

not to complex - if you know it is only letters and numbers, or better yet
only upper case or lower case letters and some numbers then fewer passwords
for the cracker to create and try and quicker results
its length - if you know it is six or eight or ten characters, or at least
five characters you can tell the password cracker to start with passwords
that length. Saves time because the cracker doesn't start with passwords of
length one character and work up from there

If you know the above things then do the web search and try some of the
password crackers.

Re: Spreadsheet

2022-03-29 Thread Alan B
You want to...

a) increase certain entries by a percentage

- or -

b) increase a percentage already in the spread sheet

If a) then enter the percentage in a cell of your choice, remember
percentages less than 100% are entered as fractions, e.g. 20% is entered as
.2, 45% as .45, and so on. Multiply the value that needs to increase by the
percentage and add that amount to the value.
If the value is 55 and is in cell B1
and the percentage to increase is 10% and .1 is entered in C1
and the new value should appear in D1, then in D1 enter the following
=B1+(B1*C1)

If b) and there is a cell with a percentage already in the spreadsheet, and
that percentage is being used already in formulas in the spreadsheet, then
change the percentage to the new value.

Re: Reveal Codes

2022-03-21 Thread Alan B
There is no reveal codes in OpenOffice.

Reveal Codes was a Wordperfect feature. The Word feature of the same name
is activated by Shift+F1. The Word feature may go by the same name but is
nothing like the Wordperfect feature because the structure of the files is
different.

If you have a line (or double line, or dashed line, or etc) across a page,
check for borders in the paragraph style both above the line and below the
line. I've had that happen to me before and frustrated the heck out of me
before I finally figured it out. Still happens sometimes. Don't know what
I'm doing to make it happen but have at least figured out how to get rid of
it.

"+1" (###) ###-

Enter the ten digits into the cell, e.g. 1234567890, and the number will be

Re: File Access Denied

2022-02-01 Thread Alan B
It doesn't look like your question has gotten a response.

The message means that the logon (username & password) being used when
trying to access the file does not have the privileges needed.

Privileges are associated with the username so, are you using a different
username? If yes, logon with the original username the files were created
with and try again.

Are the files saved on a network administered by someone else? If yes,
refer the problem to your network administrator. They should be able to
correct it quickly or tell you why you no longer have access.

If none of the above apply, then more information is needed.
* what operating system is being used, e.g. Windows 10, Mac OS X...

Re: Problems

2022-01-27 Thread Alan B
Ron,
Strongly recommend do not include your phone number or personal information
beyond your email address. This is a public mailing list and whatever you
post here can be read by anyone.

As to the crashing there are many many potential causes and they differ
depending on such things as the particular software being used and the
configuration of the computer. If an old version of Windows and a new
version of OpenOffice or vice versa that could be the problem. A recent
Windows update could even be the source of the problem.

In no particular order here are some potential solutions if your computer
is using Windows 10. I suggest try each one, see if the problem persists
and if so move on to the next one.
* Make sure ALL Windows updates have been applied
* Make sure you're using the latest version of OpenOffice
* Uninstall OpenOffice then reinstall it
* Check space available on the hard drive, Windows seems to like 20% of the
hard drive free (regardless of the drive's size). If there's not 20% free
see if you can remove files and/or uninstall programs you don't use to get
to 20% free
* Use your antivirus and antimalware software and do full scans of the hard
drive to see if any threats are found and if they are let the antivirus and
antimalware programs fix them
* Check CPU and Memory usage in the Performance tab in Task Manager. If
either of them are pegged see what program(s) are causing it and shut them
down or uninstall ones you don't need.

Re: Older Open Office

2022-01-23 Thread Alan B
Hello,

Older versions can be found here
https://www.openoffice.org/download/

When using the above link, you will see "Select your favorite operating
system, language, and version:"

Look below "version:". That is a list that can be used to select the
version you want by clicking the arrow at the right side of the box. It
should show 4.1.11 when you first look at it. If the version you want isn't
in the list select the last option, "Older releases".

Keep in mind newer computers (especially a 14 years newer computer) may not
run older software because the older software is not compatible.

Software does reach "end of life" where it is no longer supported, bugs
fixed, hacking vulnerabilities patched, etc. And older versions may not
read files sent to you created by newer versions of software.

Open Office end of life info is here.

Re: Linking sheets

2021-09-25 Thread Alan B
Don,

Not sure I understand what you're trying to do and this suggestion isn't
"automatic" but, if what you want to do is go directly to a location on a
different sheet, it can be done without navigating there.

Presuming each sheet is a different tab in the same workbook...

   1. Insert the cursor at the beginning of the "Name Box" (just above the
empty rectangle where the column headings row and row number columns meet).
The Name Box will have the address of the current cell in it.
   2. Type the name of the sheet you want to get to followed by a period,
   ".".
   3. Press enter.
   4. The cell highlight will move to the sheet/cell entered in the Name
Box and bring that sheet to the top.

The Name Box shows the address of the current cell without the page name.

If, for example, you're on sheet in cell Z125 and want to move to
sheetSSSP cell Z125 then...
- put the cursor before the address (Z125) of the current cell in the Name
Box
- type sheetSSSP. (the Name Box now contains sheetSSSP.Z125)
- press enter

sheetSSSP will now be the top sheet and the cursor will be in cell Z125.

As I said, not automatic, but maybe a useful method for you to navigate to
the same cell on a different sheet.

I do not believe this will work if the sheets are in different files.

Re: OpenOffice

2021-08-12 Thread Alan B
The password is needed to decrypt the files.

A password cracker can recover the password. I did that a year or so ago
when I had the same problem. Problem solved.

Search for OpenOffice password cracker. You'll find several. Don't remember
which I used or I would tell you.

Depends on the type of passwords you're using, whether and how long before
password is recovered. In my case was an alphanumeric six character
password. I think it took about 10 minutes before it figured out the
password.

Re: Help on using Open Office Calc

2021-06-26 Thread Alan B
No. There is not. Not dealing with a corporation like Adobe, Microsoft, etc.

There are organizations that provide paid support for OpenOffice. And there
are free/community help offerings.

You can check here to look for support solutions that come closest to
meeting your needs.
https://www.openoffice.org/support/

There is one link on the page above that purports to provide a link to free
Calc lessons.
http://openofficeschool.org/

I do not have any insight into the quality or value of any offerings at the
links provided. Please, explore and find what works best for you.

2021-01-02 Thread Alan B
In addition to David's note, would you please state what computer operating
system (OS) you are using?

Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Mac OS X, Chrome OS (a Chromebook), etc.

It makes a difference in regard to which installation package is correct
for you and what steps are required to install.

And as per David, please reply to the list, not to personal email.

Thank you.

Re: HELP!

2020-12-19 Thread Alan B
Hi Pat,
This is an email based volunteer staffed support list. Sorry no phone.

However many helpful people will try to assist you. For my own effort, let
me refer you to:

Instructions, with pictures, for creating labels in Writer. Bonus,
screenshots are from a Mac. Last updated Feb, 2020
https://www.wikihow.com/Print-Address-Labels-Using-OpenOffice

More instructions with pictures. The web page is rather recent as it was
last updated July 2018. The screenshots are from Windows though which may
make following them a bit more difficult
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOo3_User_Guides/Writer_Guide/Print_labels_from_db

Try the above and if you don't succeed get back to the list telling us
which instructions you used and at what step you encountered problems.

Re: Can't Export JPG

2020-12-08 Thread Alan B
The "We Transefer" landing page is obnoxious but, if you accept the Terms
of Service (the plain English version of which seem straightforward and,
surprisingly to me, don't claim ownership of content posted) policy and
then click Manage cookies (or don't and instead click I accept right away)
and turn off all the tracking features that there are controls to disable
then it is possible to download and view the video without signing up for a
We Transfer account.

The video displays exactly what Shawn describes. There are no selections
available in the "Save as type:" drop down except for PDF. The drop down
list does open. But there is only one item in the list, PDF.

To Shawn, I suggest posting somewhere else that doesn't require the viewer
to accept a ToS agreement and disable or accept a bunch of cookies.
Dropbox, Google Drive, and pCloud (among others) all allow the account
holder to create links that do not require the user to accept any
agreements or prompt them regarding cookie policies. Instead, the links go
directly to the referenced content.

Re: [AOO-Templates]

2020-11-12 Thread Alan B
How and where are the pages stored while in progress over a period of time?
Stored as files wherever you like (NOTE: a multi-page document is stored as
a single file. Individual pages of a document are not stored as discrete
files). This is the same as any pc/tablet based program you might use to
create and edit files. Where the files are saved is up to you.

Can you go back and edit at any time? Yes.

Is there spell checking? Yes.

Re: Please Could you Advise How I can solve this PLEASE

2020-11-04 Thread Alan B
Dave,

You identify parts as missing, how are you able to say this is so?

If the document opens without errors or warnings so you are able to see
"parts are missing" then the document has downloaded completely.

The missing parts may be references inside the document to parts that are
located outside the document and inaccessible to you. It is also possible
parts of the document are set to hidden and need to be unhidden to be
visible. The last possibility I can think of is change tracking. Visibility
of comments, changes and revision marks can be set in various ways so it
either looks like a "clean" document with no editing or commenting having
been done or be set to show all or a selected combination of comments,
edits, and revision marks.

The structure of a Word document file is such that if every bit of the file
does not download then Word or OpenOffice would see it as corrupted and
complain when attempting to open it. The design of file download programs
is such that, with rare exceptions, the file downloads completely and
successfully. And if it doesn't download successfully, it is very unlikely
to be recognized as a document file by the computer.

Re: Problem Opening and Editing Documents

2020-10-28 Thread Alan B
Hello Jan,

>From your description I am understanding this happens with all Open Office
documents.

My suggestion is to do a test as follows.
*Create a new document with Writer.
*Save it as a Microsoft Word file, either .doc or .docx format, then close
Writer.
*Open Writer again and open the .doc(x) file that was just created.

If the file opens without the warning then it is possible the anti-malware
program on your computer is causing the problem. I have found reports of
this type of problem with Bitdefender.

If the test file did open without warning then disable your anti-malware
program (Bitdefender or whatever it may be) and try again to open some of
your Open Office documents. If they open without the warning then the
problem is the anti-malware program.

Report the problem to the anti-malware software vendor via their support
site. If they don't have a ready solution then find a different
anti-malware solution. Better to stay protected by moving to a different
product than stay unprotected waiting an indefinite amount of time for a
solution from the software vendor.

Re: files in READ ONLY form

2020-09-10 Thread Alan B
Files have a read only property that can be set on or off outside the
program that created them.

IF you are not being prompted for a password and are being shown a "Read
only" message then...
- exit OpenOffice
- Use you file manager program (In Windows it's File Explorer, has a manila
file folder icon) to go to the directory (a.k.a. folder) the file is in
- Select one of the files that is showing as read only
- right-click the file and select properties
- see if the "Read-only" box is ticked, if it is uncheck it and click OK

IF the Read-only box was ticked, now that you've unticked it and clicked
OK, double-click the file to open it in OpenOffice

Does it still display the "Read only" message?

If no, then the problem is resolved for THAT file.

To resolve for the other files, select all of them in File Explorer, right
click and select Properties, then uncheck "Read-only" and click OK button.

Files processed this way will no longer display the "Read only" message.

Re: Question for Blended Learning

2020-08-03 Thread Alan B
Doris,

Following up Dan's note, here is a link I found with detailed instructions
how to install OpenOffice on a Chromebook. The article is dated July this
year so it is as current as possible.

http://www.linuxmadesimple.info/2020/07/how-to-install-openoffice-on-chromebook.html

I saw that Google Docs includes an app called "Forms". It may or may not
enable teaching the database concepts in your lesson. From the looking I
did, there didn't seem to be a way to review the underlying structure.

I also found that Google has a product called "Google Cloud Databases".
These included traditional SQL, e.g. MS SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and
others, as well as noSQL databases. There is a free option with this
product. You would have to check with Google to ask if there is an
educational option.

These two options are mentioned because Chromebooks are designed for
connected use and it generally requires some extra work, per the
instructions in the link, to install local programs on them as is done with
a traditional Windows pc/laptop.

Re: Compatible with Windows 10 Home; Able to open & convert .docx files

2020-07-23 Thread Alan B
Yes AND need to understand that the "editable PDF" is a special case of a
PDF document.

To create one from a LibreOffice (this is an OpenOffice mail list but you
referenced LibreOffice so this reply addresses LibreOffice) document that
can later be edited in LibreOffice the option "Hybrid PDF (embed ODF file)"
MUST be selected when creating the PDF from the LibreOffice document.

If and only if this step is taken the pdf can be edited within LibreOffice
provided other features are also available. Per LibreOffice help...
https://help.libreoffice.org/6.2/en-US/text/shared/01/ref_pdf_export.html?DbPAR=SHARED
this embeds the ODF inside the PDF.

The PDF can then be opened and edit in LibreOffice just as if it was an ODT
file.

So yes, LibreOffice can edit PDF but it must be a particular type of PDF.

Re: Compatible with Windows 10 Home; Able to open & convert .docx files

2020-07-22 Thread Alan B
Hello Norma,

#1 Is apache open office able to convert .docx files to .doc files? Yes.
Open the .docx file and save as .doc file.
NOTE: Formatting, e.g. margins, tables, and others, is not always perfectly
converted when the .docx file is opened and the same may be seen in the
saved .doc file.

#2 Can apache open office convert .pdf files to .doc file?
Not so far as I know.

For #1, I .docx files can always be read using Word online by creating a
free outlook.com account. No worries about converting the file. Also, .docx
files can have features that don't translate to the .doc format. Keeping
the file in .docx format is the way to be certain no features of the
document are lost.

For #2, there are free converters online. Microsoft Office will open .pdfs
but there are limitations with what it will do. Check here for more info

Re: open office writer

2020-05-16 Thread Alan B
Paul,

There is no phone support. This mailing list is volunteer support. Having
said that, from your problem description, it seems likely if you
double-click one of the files you want to edit in Wordpad the file opens in
Writer instead.

If this is a fair description of the problem then, to correct it, you
must...
1. RIGHT-CLICK one of the files you would like to open in Worpad
2. on the menu that appears click the "Properties" item, usually the last
item on the menu
3. click the "Change..." button
4. Find Wordpad in the list of apps (it may be necessary to click "more
apps" to see Wordpad in the list)
5. Click on Wordpad
6. Click the OK button
7. Click the next OK button

These steps will make Wordpad open this file and any other Wordpad file
when the file is double-clicked. It only needs to be done one time.

The above steps were written using Windows 10 as reference. Steps 1 & 2 are
consistent across all versions of Windows as far as I recall. From step 3
onward there may be slight differences depending the version of Windows.
Regardless, the requirement is the same. Change the program that opens the
file to Wordpad from whatever it is.

Two notes:
If/when you install OpenOffice again be mindful during the install for the
option to make OpenOffice the default program. Do not select this option
and it will not be necessary to perform the seven steps above, again, to
make Wordpad open your documents.

Uninstall Writer is not necessary. Very little disk space is recovered by
doing so and having it installed is not the root cause of the problem.

Re: E-mail Program

2020-05-08 Thread Alan B
You're welcome.

Some options for a PDF editor include Adobe's PDF editor, Foxitsoftware's
Phantom PDF, and Qoppa's PDF Studio Standard. There's others. These are the
ones I'm most familiar with.

Adobe's product is a subscription. My understanding is that when the
subscription expires the product will no longer work, can't even open the
program. Adobe also sells a perpetual license for their 2017 product. For
the 2017 product all the features work all the time. For myself, I wouldn't
pay full license price for something that's already three years old and
won't get any updates.

Foxitsoftware's Phantom PDF Standard is sold as a perpetual license with
upgrades for one year. Cost is about 90% of a one year subscription for
Adobe Acrobat Standard DC. The difference being, after the year is up, all
features continue to work.

Qoppa's PDF Studio Standard is sold as a perpetual license with upgrades
for one year. If a new release comes out within a certain time after your
purchase, nine months I think, you're entitled to the new release, so an
upgrade may become available during the license term, not just updates.
It's about 60% of the cost of Adobe's one year subscription. I've used
Qoppa on Linux for years and generally purchase a new license about every
third year. It's met all my advanced PDF needs nicely. I've never used the
Windows version. The license may be used on two devices.

Re: Unable to uninstall

2020-05-07 Thread Alan B
To uninstall the French version try the following...
1. Restart the pc (this will force all programs to close)
2. Log back in to your desktop
3. Go to Settings
4. Select Apps
5. In "Search this list" type "office"
* If Windows has OpenOffice correctly installed it will be visible in the
filtered list that is now displayed
6. Click OpenOffice
7. Click the Uninstall button
8. Follow the remaining prompts
* If a warning is displayed saying a program is preventing installation
select the option to attempt to close the program
9. Now try installing the English version

If step 5, 8 or something else does not follow per the list above please
provide more information.

Re: E-mail Program

2020-05-06 Thread Alan B
No open source PDF editors that I am aware of.

Regarding this particular question it is important to understand the
requirement. Many people I have supported have asked for a PDF editor.
Getting them to define what they actually want to do often determines that
the features of Adobe Acrobat Reader or Foxit Reader, among others, will
meet their requirements.

If the requirements include changing text (adding, removing, reflowing) in
an existing PDF, controlling how others can use the document (prohibit
select and copy text, open to a certain page, prevent modification, etc)
then yes, a PDF editor would be required.

If the requirements include highlighting, marking out, underscoring
existing text, applying a digital signature, adding comments, then Adobe
Acrobat Reader or Foxit Reader both will meet the requirements. If the
requirement is to create a PDF document then OpenOffice programs can be
used to do that along with other methods, e.g. Foxit Reader includes a PDF
"printer". Select it as the target printer and instead of a page coming out
of your physical printer, a PDF document is created.

Re: E-mail Program

2020-05-05 Thread Alan B
You're welcome, Sasha.

Some additional information for you to consider.

Yes, some are simply profiting without contributing. However some people
have limited / no online access. Sellers that provide physical media,
DVD/USB, are providing a worthwhile service for them.

The other point, OpenOffice is "open source software". Not "freeware".
There are distinctions. Most often, freeware comes with other unwanted or
unneeded software that continually requests the user to upgrade to paid
version or to buy some additional product. A nag that is not helpful and,
if the nag is followed, can lead to undesirable problems on the pc.

When you search for software I suggest including the phrase "open source",
with the quotes, in your search. You will find many useful programs
provided in the same manner as OpenOffice.

e.g.
Audacity - sound file editing
GIMP, Krita - image editing and creation
OpenShot - video editing
Thunderbird - email
Calibre - ebook library and management
Gramps - geanalogical research software
etc.

Sasha,

To add to Wade's statement...

OO is free for anyone to download and should be downloaded from the
official website, https://www.openoffice.org/

Click on the "I want to download Apache OpenOffice" link to get to the
download page.

No registration required.
Return to the page as often as you like to check for a new version.
Download the new version, again for free, when it is available on the
download page.

Re: Adobe OO for Linux...?

2020-04-27 Thread Alan B
Hello Martin,

I haven't installed the RPM package. However on the Apache OpenOffice
website I found these instructions for RPM install.
https://www.openoffice.org/download/common/instructions.html#linux-rpm

Seems you need to:
navigate to the directory the RPMs were extracted to
su to root
issue the command rpm -Uvih *rpm
there's a few other steps for shell integration

Been a while since I installed my DEB version but, if I recall correctly,
it was the same process. Extract, use a wildcard to indicate all DEBs,
*deb. That install is working just fine.

Have you tried,
- select cell
- grab cell handle at bottom right with mouse left click and hold
- press and hold Ctrl key
- drag mouse

That will produce a column that repeats the number in the highlighted cell.

jhivacaville,

Go to this website to download the latest version of the program, free.
https://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html

As already mentioned the program is free.

The message does go to all users, not to Apache foundation. This is not
ridiculous. This is the support model for this program and many other open
source programs. It is a different model than used by commercial software
publishers.

Everyone here is a volunteer providing free support to other users. Neither
strong words, frustration or CAPITAL LETTERS will change that.

Re: Saving changes in original

2020-03-07 Thread Alan B
Sorry Saleema, no new ideas.

I am not certain from your description what steps you take to get to the
point Save is not available.
You say '...the "save" option was not checked in settings...'. In which
settings?
When I have Writer open there is no "Settings" menu. There are "File",
"Edit", "View", "Insert", "Format", "Table", "Tools", "Window", and "Help"
menu items. None of the sub menus under any of those menus has a "settings"
option.
More specificity is needed about the steps you are taking to understand
clearly how you get to the point of "Save" not being available.

e.g.
1) open Writer,
2) after Writer is open use the File>Open menu,
3) find and select "my file"
... (and what folder is the file in? Documents, Downloads, someplace
else)...
4) click "Open"
-- or --
1) find file on computer (where, maybe Documents?),
2) double-click file to open
-- or --
...something else? If so, describe the process step-by-step.

And once the file is open similar step-by-step description as above to get
to the point of saving the file.

Re: Saving changes in original

2020-03-06 Thread Alan B
Saleema,

To save changes to an existing document, File>Save, is the way to do it.
Note, if there are no changes "Save" will be dimmed and clicking it doesn't
cause any action.

If this is what you are doing already then a little more detail about the
exact steps from opening the file to attempting to save it would be helpful.

Also, is this a problem with every document you attempt to edit and save or
with only one or a small number of documents?

John,

1. Select File>Page Preview from the menu
2. Click the "Format Page" button
3. Click the "Sheet" tab
4. Select "Fit print range(s) to width/height" from the "Scaling mode" list
5. Set "Width in pages" to 1

Print the worksheet.

Re: Help with document

2020-03-04 Thread Alan B
Hello Bella,

Some background info that I hope is helpful, re:templates...

If the last part of the file name provided by the university was .ott it is
a template file, e.g. university.ott. If not .ott at end of the name it is
not a template file.

If it is a template file like university.ott...:
* and university.ott is opened by double-click or File>Open... then the
document name at the top of the OpenOffice window will be "Untitled 1". It
will not be "university.ott" or "university"
* when saving the file for the first time OpenOffice will prompt for a file
name
* all edits will be saved in the file, "file-name-you-make-up.ODT"
* if "university.ott" template file is opened again none of the edits will
be there because that is not the file the edits were saved in

If for example you named the file "university" when saving, OpenOffice has
given it the full name "university.ODT". To find the file containing your
edits the file "university.ODT" must be opened.

Since you saved your edits but they weren't there when the file was opened
again I suspect you opened and edited a template file, .ott, then named and
closed it per the prompts when done. Then when opening the file again the
original "university.ott" file was opened and so no edits are found in the
file.

The "file-name-you-make-up.ODT", e.g. "university.ODT", is the file that
must be opened to see your edits.

If you're using Windows the file that was saved with all the edits is most
likely to be found in your "My Documents" folder.

Is the template publicly available? If yes, please indicate where it can be
found so some testing can be done.

Also, to help replicate your conditions when testing, what version of
OpenOffice are you using and what kind of computer (Windows, include
version, i.e. 7, 10, etc., Mac, something else?)

Thank you.

Re: Unsaved Open Office Writer Document

2020-02-03 Thread Alan B
Hello Narissa,

I think you are out of luck. If OpenOffice or the computer had crashed or
if you forced the program to close without saving the document you would be
able to find the document per the instructions at the link below.
https://smallbusiness.chron.com/recover-unsaved-work-openoffice-29581.html

That crash recovery version of the document the instructions direct how to
find disappeared whenever the program was closed by clicking the Discard
button in every test I tried.

One other possibility is look in the directory the file is saved in. Make
sure your file browser is set to show hidden files. It is possible a
version of the file might still be there. The name would likely start with
the ~ character and end with #. The file has a greater chance of being
there if it was saved on a network drive instead of the pc's hard drive.

Good luck.

At the risk of rubbing salt in a wound, and not at all intending to,
regardless what happens with this file I suggest the following to people as
a way to protect against just this sort of thing. "Save early, save often".
The keyboard combination Ctrl+S allows saving the file just as rapidly as
typing a capital letter. Get into the Ctrl+S habit at any time you pause
your editing and there's a great chance of not loosing any work.

Hi Chuck,

I'm also using OO 4.1.7. On Linux though. Have Windows 10 but have not
tested with it. Only so much time for volunteering in a day.

Based on your feedback I tried with no document open, with a new unsaved
document open (Untitled 1), and with a previously saved document open.

In all cases File > New > Templates and Documents initialized a new
Untitled 1 document based on the selected template.

Seems you have discovered a bug in the Mac version.

Re: [AOO-Templates]

2020-01-29 Thread Alan B
Hi Susan,

Sorry you've invested so much time without success.

The following instructions worked for me...
1. the web page with links to the instructions
OpenOffice.org 3.3 User Guides (ODT) - Apache OpenOffice Wiki

2. The chapter with template usage info found in the "Getting Started
Guide" section of the webpage above. The link will download an .odt file
that opens in Writer
Ch3 - Using Styles and Templates

4. Refer to the section "Importing a template" on page 22.
The template must be imported before it can be used in the next step.
Note: you must know where the template file has been downloaded to so it
can be picked for import

5. Refer to "Using a template to create a document" on page 14.
Once a template is imported this is the only step that needs to be repeated
to create a document with a given template.

Re: Calc Help-INTERIM SOLUTION

2020-01-27 Thread Alan B
Hello Vince,

Thank you for your kind words.

In your sheet notes you describe needing to "segment a formula" into
several ranges. Unnecessary work, I think.

Try the following formulas instead...
In H43, =MAXIFS(G6:G41,G6:G41,">0")
In H44, =MINIFS(G6:G41,G6:G41,">0")

They appear to me to work as desired in your example sheet.

Re: Calc Help

2020-01-24 Thread Alan B
DNB is meant to note someone did not bowl. It is just text entered in each
cell rather than merging the cells and entering "Did not bowl".

Now, some bad news. After reviewing what I suggested I realized the formula
given for cell AL7 will always show the value in G36 if the column G
formula is copied to every row at the start of each season. If it is added
week by week to each row in column G, then no problem. That doesn't make
for an easy to maintain sheet though.

My idea was enter three scores each week and everything else updates.

I did a little more thinking and came up with the following which meets the
goal above (this all started so AL7 and AN7 will update without being
modified by hand)...

* cells in the range D6:F41 must always be a score, the text "DNB", or be
empty
* Rows 6 through 41 must always have the games entered week by week. IOW,
no entering week 7 before week 6.
* the row for half way in the season must be removed. Only rows for bowling
weeks are allowed

* The formula in cell G6 for "Match Series" column is...
=IF(SUM(D6:F6)=0,IF(D6="DNB","DNB",""),SUM(D6:F6))
The formula displays the total for the games, DNB, or "".
SUM is 0 if columns D-F have DNB or "".
This formula can be copied to all the rows in the column and it will update
correctly for each row it is in.

* The formula in cell H6 for "Match Average" column is...
=IF(ISNUMBER(G6),G6/3,G6)
This formula can be copied to all the rows in the column and it will update
correctly for each row it is in.

* The formula in cell J6 for "Total Pins" column calculates total pins for
rows 6 through row the formula is in.
=IF(ISNUMBER(I6),DSUM($G$5:INDIRECT(CONCATENATE("$G",ROW())),1,$BB$5:$BB$6),"")
This formula should be copied to all week# rows in column J. It updates
correctly for each row it is in.
So for row 10 it calculates the total of rows 6 through 10, For row 15 the
total of row 6 through 15 and so on. If there is no number in League
Average it displays "".
Buried in the formula is the DSUM function. It requires a "Criteria Range"
to work. As written here the criteria range is cells BB5 and BB6. Cell BB5
contains the formula =G5. Cell BB6 contains >=0. For a criteria range to
work the column titles of the "database" and the "criteria range" must
match exactly (not accounting for formatting). If column title G, "Match
Series", is ever changed having cell BB5 be a formula that refers to it
prevents needing to remember to update the criteria.
The INDIRECT function enables the formula to identify the ROW() it is in so
the DSUM database range doesn't have to be entered individually for each
row, e.g. $G$5:$G$5, $G$5:$G$6, $G$5:$G$7 ... , $G$5:$G$10 and so on.

* The formula in cell AL7 for Vince post match play is...
=INDEX($Sheet1.G6:G41,36-COUNTBLANK($G$6:$G$41),1)
The column G formula returns one of three values, the sum of the games,
"DNB", or "". The season has 36 weeks. The formula presumes that as weeks
go by the Match Series column will be either a number, "DNB", or "" and
that "" are always the last rows in the column. Provided these conditions
are true the formula always returns the most recently entered week's Match
Series result.

* The formula in cell AN7 for Vince post match average is...
=INDEX($Sheet1.H6:H41,36-COUNTBLANK($H$6:$H$41),1)
This works the same as the above formula except for Match Average.

Hi Margaret,

I'm not familiar with Open Office, or other documents, being converted
without authorization to Microsoft Word format.

So I have a question. To open a document do you find the file then
double-click it with your mouse and it opens in Word?

If that's what you do and what happens then the problem is likely something
called a "file association".

If Word has been recently installed, reinstalled, or the the repair feature
has been applied to the Microsoft Office installation then the file
associations could have changed. Some Windows updates also change (set to
Microsoft's preferences) file associations.

To change the file association so your Open Office documents open in Write,
Calc, etc...
1. Find one of your files
2. Right-click the file
3. Select the Properties item on the menu (it should be at or near the
bottom)
4. In the dialog box that opens look for the "Opens with:" entry (it should
be near the top)
5. To the right of "Opens with:" there is a button "Change...", click this
button
6. Now you'll get a screen asking how you want to open the file, click the
program you want to use
7. Then click the OK button, the list closes
8. Next click the OK button

You're done. If file associations were the problem, they have just been
changed to open files with the program you want them to open in.

Re: Calc Help

2020-01-22 Thread Alan B
I tested by modifying the formula in cell H7 in your sample spreadsheet.
The modified formula is...

=IF((ISNUMBER(G7));(G7/3);"")

The test is whether or not the value in G7 is a number, ISNUMBER(G7). Text
or a blank returns false, any number returns true. Replace the existing
formula in column H with this. The same changes should be applied in the
formula in column J.

The if test logic is reversed from your original formula. Now if the test
is true because the cell in column G contains a number then value1, Match
Series / 3, should be the result.

So IF(test; value1; value2) changes the order of your values. Instead of
IF(test;"";(G7/3)) the formula is IF(test;(G7/3);"").

Re: Calc Help

2020-01-20 Thread Alan B
I've found a method that can work, providing the spreadsheet design is
modified somewhat.
It comes from a formula provided by RusselB in the OpenOffice forums.

=index(range;count(range);1)

For your sample spreadsheet this formula in cell AL7
=INDEX($Sheet1.G6:G42,COUNTA($Sheet1.G6:G42),1)
will return the Match Series value for the last value entered. When week#20
is completed the number in AL7 will update. When week#21 is completed it
will update again, and so on.

REQUIRED design changes
1. There must not be any merged cells that span column G. A merged cell in
the column breaks the formula. Update the =INDEX formula for column H and
the same is true, no merged cells.
2. The formulas in the Match Average and Total Pins columns should change.
The IF test should be whether the tested cell contains a number, not
whether it is blank. This will prevent #value! errors being displayed in
those cells.
3. Last, any blank rows in a column must be BELOW the currently completed
week number.

To meet design change #1 the "Did not bowl" in week 6 cannot be merged
cells. And to meet condition #3 they cannot be empty either. As an
alternative you could enter DNB in each cell in the row.

The row of merged cells that demark "half season" needs to change because
of #1. If the row is deleted and the season half is indicated by a heavy
border between week 18 and 19, that would suffice.

This is the simplest solution I could find. More complex formulas might be
possible that would meet your goal but I'm not familiar enough with Calc to
readily conceive of them.

2020-01-19 Thread Alan B
Hello Vince,

I'm intrigued but not able to follow what you're trying to do. Columns D
through H appear to be the games bowled in any given week, rows (or should
I say weeks) 1 through 21 are the results of the games in those weeks. That
seems clear to me. But whose games, Russ, Vince, Dave, or Bob's?

The disconnect comes with "using the results in [AL] and [AN]".

How does a single row shown as 1 - 21 and columns [D] though [H] in your
example relate to multiple individuals [AL] through [AN]?

And more importantly, what are you trying to achieve? If I understood that
I might be able to offer some useful help.

Re: Windows 10 version 1903

2020-01-19 Thread Alan B
Hi Sandy,

I have Windows 10 v 1903 with LibreOffice. Not the same as Open Office, I
know, but both come from the same code.

LibreOffice works fine on my pc and has been on it since it was Windows 7.
I has continued to function through all upgrades... Windows 7 --> Windows
10 (whatever the earliest release was) --> all the other Windows 10
upgrades through and including Windows 10 v 1903.

I've also done some searching to see if there are issues with Open Office
on Windows 1903. It seems some people are having issues with Open Office on
Windows 1903. Whether that happens to you will only be known if you try the
upgrade.

If you try the upgrade and have problems then there are two solutions I've
seen. Upgrade to the latest version of Open Office which people report
sometimes resolves the problem. The other option is install LibreOffice
which doesn't seem to be experiencing the problem and is reported to work
without issue.

I hope this information is helpful and is enough for you to decide what you
want to try next.

I encourage you to update Windows. It is the most widely used pc operating
system in the world and because of that the most widely attacked. Not
updating it leaves it vulnerable to attacks.

Re: Sharing Excel

2020-01-17 Thread Alan B
Sarah,

Another method, that would allow working on the spreadsheet without sending
a copy back and forth and back again, would be to save it online and share
it using a service like OneDrive, Google Drive, DropBox and others.

The idea is you both use the same file so if you edit at 3pm and your son
at 4pm he sees your edits and vice versa without having to check email to
see if an updated version of the file is in the inbox.

I offer this suggestion because you wrote "share a file" which I'm thinking
means you both want to work with the same file so you can see each other's
progress.

If that's not your goal then Wade's suggestion is certainly the simpler
option.

...oops, accidentally hit send. The complete message was meant to be...

A comment about installing OpenOffice when Microsoft Office is already
installed.

Watch carefully during the installation process. At one point a question
will be asked whether to make OpenOffice the "default" program.

If you respond Yes then double-clicking one of you document files will open
it in OpenOffice. If No is selected then double-clicking one of your
documents will continue to open in Microsoft product after OpenOffice
install completes.

In either case, the default program can be changed so double-click always
opens documents in a particular program.

And if the default is not the program you wish to use for a given document
then right-click the file, select the "open with" option and click the
program you want.

Re: Making a PDF file

2019-11-10 Thread Alan B
Karen, not sure your goal.

If you want to print the email (you start with "...turn an email into a
pdf" and then you end with "...when I try to print", so I'm guessing you
want to print the email) why not use the "print" option in your email? It
saves a bunch of steps.

If you've tried printing the email while viewing and you don't get the
print out you expect, say extra parts of the web page are printing not only
the text of the email, then you may be selecting the print menu from the
browser and not from within the email.

With an email open type Ctrl+P. If the printing dialog that opens is the
one you usually see then for sure it is the wrong print option being used.
Click "Cancel" to return to your email. Then look carefully around the
edges of the email's reading area. See if you can locate a little printer
icon, a three periods "..." icon, or a "more..." link. The three periods
or the more link should lead to a printer selection if there isn't a print
icon on the message border. If you find a print option, try it.

You need to use the command to print the message (which is put on the page
as part of the email program), it is not the command to print the whole
webpage (everything in the browser window).

The two operations produce different results.

I posted a video on YouTube ages ago showing these operations. The

sort, then sort, haven't changed.

If you want a look, check here... Sorting a table in a spreadsheet,

Re: Will I Lose My Files

2019-09-24 Thread Alan B
No. Updating the software does not cause loss of files you've created.

You will be able to both read and edit files created with prior versions of
the software in the new software.

Download from the official site - https://www.openoffice.org/

Look for "I want to download Apache OpenOffice" and click on it to get to
the download links. Click on "Download the full installation".

Version 4.1.6 is Windows 10 compatible.

It will pick up your historic documents.

Since you've installed OpenOffice the icons (either shortcuts or actual

Re: open office questions

2019-07-19 Thread Alan B
Hi Jon,
I'm responding to offer some thoughts about your invoicing requirements. If
you've thought it through, you're all set. If not, you might want to
consider some of the following.
Will you need to track status of invoices?
 - paid / unpaid
 - partial paid and balance due
Report on invoices?
 - total invoices mailed this month
 - total of invoices paid this month
What will the volume be like?
 - a few a month or many each week?
 - how do you envision producing them? e.g. fill in spaces on a document
and print the document or fill in a form on the screen, taxes and totals
automatically calculated and then invoice printed.

OpenOffice can certainly all of it Depending on the amount of automation
you desire making it happen will be simple or require more than basic
skill. If you only need to fill out a paper invoice with no automation,
that would be a basic form in Writer. If you want automation OpenOffice can
meet the need but the system needs to be built. If you want automation and
aren't up to building it, consider an invoicing program. I searched "open
source invoice software" and got the following links which may help you
decide.
https://opensource.com/article/18/10/open-source-invoicing-tools
http://opensourcebilling.org/
https://www.bambooinvoice.net/

I hope the above is useful.

Re: Open Office

2019-07-08 Thread Alan B
Hello Jane,

You don't describe the steps being followed when each issue occurs so my
suggestions are guesses based on what I imagine might be happening.

1. If using the tab key to indent the lines that will not affect the
margin. The next line will start to the left of the tab. To make an indent
for a paragraph (lines indented the same so long as Enter key not pressed)
select Formal > Paragraph from the menu. Then on the "Indents & Spacing"
tab set the "Before text" space to the value you want.
2. The same indentations will not be different "here and there". Wherever
your indentations are different there will be a space or a change in font
size or a margin change associated with the spot where the indentation is
different.
3. More information needed, what is the message?
4. More information needed. What method to open (e.g. double-click mouse on
icon, select from menu, etc), does one method always work and another
always fail, what is your computer's operating system (e.g. Windows 7,
Windows 10, OS X), how much memory in your computer, what size is the hard
drive and how much space is free on the hard drive? With Windows I have
experienced programs working sometimes and other times not if the hard
drive has less than 10% free space.
5. Try selecting the text, right-clicking, then select the "Default
Formatting" menu option.

I do not know what you mean by "using a TextEdit". However I can offer the
following suggestions (all presume each mail list address is on a single

1. sort the address list and then remove the duplicate entries by

2. for a long list, import the entries to a table then run a query for
unique entries, save the query result as the new list

Re: Unable to Size the written Page

2019-04-30 Thread Alan B
Hello,
Seems one of two possibilities to me.
1) The zoom level of the document has changed. This makes things look
larger on screen but has no effect on the print format. Even something that
looks huge on screen, if formatted for A4 would still print correctly on
A4. To adjust zoom level...
Select View > Zoom... from the menu. Pick the Zoom Factor to use, maybe
"Fit width". Then click the "OK" button.

2) The document format has been changed. e.g. from A4 to A6. In this case
change the document format as follows...
Select Format > Page... from the menu. Pick the 2nd tab at the top of the
dialog box, Page. Open the "Format" list and select the appropriate
document size. Click the OK button.

Re: Help with installation

2019-04-21 Thread Alan B
Kurt,

I have read, but not experienced, that some antivirus products affect
installation or launch of OpenOffice.

Your experience, install seems successful but programs won't launch, sounds
very much like the problem described with Windows 10 and Windows Defender
Antivirus.

To test this, turn off Windows Defender and then try and launch an
OpenOffice program. If it launches successfully then find the file
"soffice.bin" on your hard drive. Once found, modify Windows Defender
Antivirus settings to add the folder it is in to "Controlled Folder Access"
in Windows Defender Security Center.

My reference for this suggestion is here:
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/87858-add-protected-folders-controlled-folder-access-windows-10-a.html

For the latest version of OpenOffice the soffice.bin file should be found
here...
C:\Program Files\OpenOffice 4\program\soffice.bin

Re: how to flip a picture??

2019-04-21 Thread Alan B
In Draw, a picture can be turned right side up by:
- right-click the picture
- select "Position and Size..." from the menu
- select "Rotation" tab
- specify "Angle" to rotate

In the case of flipping it right side up it needs to be rotated 180
degrees. So specify 180 degrees and click "OK"

To do same with mouse
- click the picture twice (NOT double-click)
  - first click picture gets square green selection handles
  - once selection handles appear click again, picture gets round red
handles
- point at any corner handle, mouse pointer changes to circular arrow,
click and drag with circular arrow to rotate picture
NOTE: the handles along the sides and top, the mouse changes to parallel
lines those will shear the picture. don't click or drag them to rotate.

Re: Spreadsheets

2019-04-18 Thread Alan B
Not certain I'm understanding your question so I will answer similar
question and hope it is what you mean.

I use OpenOffice Calc and save my spreadsheets. The saved files appear to
be Excel files. I don't have Excel. Why are the files for a program I do
not have?

If the above describes your issue then the "problem" is the files are saved
in Excel format instead of Calc format. This setting can be changed each
time a file is saved and can be set to default to save as Excel in Tools >
Options > Load Save.

If this is not the problem then I do not understand your question. I have
created files in Calc for use in Excel many times. And I have created files
in Calc for use in Calc but saved them in Excel format. Also, many times.

As far as I am aware the file that is created is not licensed, it is the
program (Excel, Calc, etc.) that is licensed.

Re: Lost work

2019-04-15 Thread Alan B
Michael,

"...file does not exist..." can happen when a file's location changes (so
the file still exists) but the "recent files" entry in the menu is pointing
to the last place the file was. So, the exact file name, including the
path, referred to in the menu doesn't exist any more.

The message can also happen if the file's name is changed but the file is
still in the same place. Again, from the point of view of the "recent
files" entry, that exact file name doesn't exist.

Did you change the name of the file?

Did you change the location of the file?

If you did either of the above then you must use the File > Open command
from the menu and pick out the renamed or relocated file.

If you didn't do either then my final suggestion would be to search the
hard drive of your pc for the file. Presuming you're using Windows 7 or
later do the following:

Open powershell and enter the following commands...
cd \
get-childitem -filter "yourfilename" -force -recurse -erroraction
silentlycontinue | select-object FullName

When the command completes there will either be an empty line (file was not
found) or the path and name of the file, e.g.
c:\users\me\documents\temp\somewhere\myfile.odt

Re: ? can any outside computer enter my OpenOffice document ? Thanks !

2019-04-12 Thread Alan B
Is see two questions here...

1) Can an outside computer connect to the desktop on your computer?

"Out of the box" no. Computers are not usually set up to enable remote
connections when first set up. However there are many things that can be
done to enable remote connections on purpose or can happen to enable remote
connection by compromise.

2) ...enter my OpenOffice document...?

Compatible software can open the document unless it is password protected.
Then, the password is required.

You don't say how the hymns are arranged and segregated from one another.

"With a few keystrokes" is unlikely unless the arrangement supports it.

How are they stored?

And how are they arranged?
- Write
 one per page
 one per paragraph
 something else?
- Calc
 one per cell
 one per sheet
 something else?
- another program?

Hello Lois,

There is no equivalent to Publisher in Open Office. Depending on your
needs, Draw may suffice. The Open Office programs are a complete suite and
separate components can't be individually downloaded or installed.

The most common recommendation I've seen for a Publisher like program is
Scribus. Available at this link, https://www.scribus.net/. It is open
source like Open Office.
