Re: [Finale] to upgrade or not...

2016-07-13 Thread Dick Hauser
I’m hoping others can confirm my memory on upgrades. It’s my understanding
that F12 is the compatibility link between the post 12 version database
structure and the legacy versions. That is, F14 won’t open an F09 file
directly. The process to bring forward legacy files is to open and save from
F2012 which will make it available to later versions like F14.5. Is that true?

I don’t know the PC world, but the Mac OS includes Garageband (of course) which
would provide the sound. I bet there is a similar thing in the PC world (some
simple music play program included with the OS). The interface is hard to
answer without knowledge of your students gear. I suppose the best world would

 Hi listers,

As many of you know (I know how it is, you remember details about some
people, but not all, on a list like this) I had a stroke at age 60
last October, and followed that up with a bad fall on stairs in Feb
which injured the base of my spine (be careful going down stairs - 3
in my family are dealing with injuries from a fall down stairs!). I
can only sit for a few minutes at a time without taking addictive
pain-killers and have worked for years, and gotten pretty good fin
chops (though now I have to learn 2014 quickly) sitting.

Plus, as I have mentioned in the last few days, I have had
major-league computer issues with my super-wiz-bang HP Windows 8
machine. I am typing this on my laptop, standing, but my Finale chops
 on it are dismal.

Meanwhile, I am in the middle of a deadline, and even though I have an
extension I simply must get this work done -choir needs most of it's
music by the last week of July. It is quite adventurous, involving
research, narration, and PowerPoint. I have had good luck with some
great ladies at my church who are helping - typing my dictation and
doing the PowerPoint which I am a novice at.

My point, and I do have one (thanks for reading this far) is that I
could really use some help! When I was healthy, I enjoyed nothing
more than sitting and making quick arrangements in Finale - did them
all the time for others, even strangers on the interwebs, and I am
thinking there are users like me out there who are still healthy and
wouldn't mind taking a few minutes now and then to pound out a file or
 two for me. Yes?

I know that I could have done some of these chores during the time
taken to write this message, (esp how bad a typist I am on this
laptop) but I am hoping that the detail will draw some people in to
sharing some of your skills with me, and interested folks won't need
the whole story with every request.

I will list some things in this message, and will add more in the
coming weeks. The project is called Searching For America and tells
the story of K.L. Bates writing America the Beautiful in 1893 - for
singer actors, chorus, and chamber orch (strings, 2 fls, 2 trpts, 3
perc.). I am making big-time use of folk songs and other existing
material, such as old sheet-music of obscure tunes that don't have
midi files anywhere (I use found midi files a lot in this sort of
thing, but I don't even have the time to spend much time at that now).
My plan is to give mostly straight-forward arrangements to the
choir, and contribute more originality to the instrumental and
narration portions before the prmire in November.

Many of you are pros, and have deadlines of your own, but some of you
may be able to share some work. No money to offer - I am getting a
little for the finished product, but not enough.

If anyone is with me so far, here are my first needs. Any Fin file will do:

 1. Type out these songs:
 http://www.loc.gov/item/sm1871.02334/

My wife has already typed the words to the latter - I'll include that
 in my next email.

 2. same for some pdfs I can attach to private emails. simple stuff.

 3. A fin file, as simply scored as possible, of the Sousa arrangement
of The Star-Spangled Banner - midi files may be around for that.

A message with I'll do 1 or whatever to the list will help avoid dupes.

More later! Thanks for any help!

OK, I'm puzzled.

On ML, the user library is hidden. If you need to open it, make sure you are in

At first, I thought one had to use the option key when in finale looking for a
file which is in the user Library. However, I just tried that and it didn't
work.

From the finder I can get to system / library / application support / make
music / Finale 2012 / but there is no Component files folder there. There
is a Libraries folder, which has a Maestro Font Default in it, however.

Using the option key from the finder, I can get to user / library / Application
Support / Make Music / Finale 2012 / Libraries / and find a Maestro Font
Default there also.

I don't have a clue as to how one might open that file in Finale to make
changes.

across much friendlier face-to-face than in the cold world of cyberspace-text
 — to be invaluable.

I agree with Robert, Eric. The question is not productive at all from a tech
standpoint. First of all, because the user has already spent considerable
energy trying to do it, and in getting through to the tech support staff so
they have built up a head of steam so to speak. Tech needs to bring them
down and reassure them before good information can be exchanged. Secondly, the
question is a paternal power play that's also not productive at that point in
the interaction.

Tech support needs to figure out what the client wants to do, and explain how
it can be done. Failing that, it's really helpful (though frustrating) for a
client to hear that tech support can't figure out how to do it. At some point
in the conversation, it might be useful for tech support to find out why but
only in the context of improving the programming and only after the client has
been served.

I do agree with you, however, that in teaching the question is sometimes
useful. Explaining why you think something is sometimes useful in learning
more about it. Particularly if the teacher is open minded enough to empower
the student as opposed to forcing the student to adopt methods without
exploration and integration.

[Finale] Music Translation Software

2012-08-02 Thread Dick Hauser
A friend sent me this link:

http://www.npr.org/player/v2/mediaPlayer.html?action=1t=3islist=trueid=2d=08-01-2012

Among these NPR programs, is one about an Abelton plugin called Sufi Plug-in.
The program is listed as Translation Software For Music Makers.

It's just a plugin to change defaults in Abelton to quarter tone tunings and
tempo settings other than 4/4. We can do those things in Finale, but the
concept got me thinking about the inherent western bias in Finale and Sibelius.
Perhaps locating the development center in eastern Europe, is a step toward
globalizing MM products and increase the size of it's market.

Does anyone know if notation is significantly different in other cultures?

Re: [Finale] MM Songwriter

Problem solved. Songwriter wouldn't respond to the numlock option on this
old (2007) macbook. We just plugged a very old iMac usb keyboard into the
MacBook (2.16 Ghz from 2007) and it works fine with Songwriter. We've got the
number pad and the functionality of the curser (arrow) keys. It also types in
word processing apps on the macbook. Like others have said, makes the laptop
less easy to move around, but most of the editing is being done in one place so
adding the keyboard isn't a really big bother.

[Finale] MM Songwriter

2012-01-27 Thread Dick Hauser
Today I advised a friend to purchase MM Songwriter after I'd tried a demo on my
iMac. As we went through the tutorial for Songwriter on their MacBook (2.16GHz
intel Core 2 Duo 10.6.8) we were not able to invoke the numeric keypad using
the designated function key. This was during the simple entry tutorial where
one sets a different note value using the number pad from extended keyboards.
Anyone know how to get the functionality of the number keypad for simple entry
in Songwriter on a MacBook (other than pressing the NumLoc function key so
the little green light stays on)? Songwriter has a pull down for keyboard sets
and laptop is one of them, but we can't select that (it reverts back to
default.

left the layer 4 note (moved to layer 1). Moving just layer 2 to
layer 1 removes the original layer 1 - but does place layer 2 into
layer 1. If I chose the option to copy rather than move, it seems

Finale 2010, Windows XP Pro SP3, all patches, Intel Core2 Duo 3GHz,

this point it looks like a typical hung application, and CPU

In case it was a slow first run, I have waited about a half hour

That's it. I have to force the program closed.

Re: [Finale] F2007c printing glitch

2009-12-04 Thread Dick Hauser

Thanks for your questions, Noel, sorry I was so unclear.

The seven files are all ~.mus. They include chords, notes, repeats,
and lyrics.

Each is an individual file (not a linked part).

The file that I am printing from is also a ~.mus file. Two pages.
Dark line is on page one.

I just looked around for an option to create a ~.tif, but didn't see
it. Is that process analogous to creating a PDF from the print menu?
If so, then I can report that the PDF viewed on the screen in the Mac
app Preview has no line, but the printed copy does.

The line is just at the point where I've pasted a bit into the file,
as you suspect. I'll make a copy of the large file, delete that
section and check the print out and report back.

**

Philip said that my description sounded like a lyric word extension
error.

I've taken a look at that, Philip, thanks for the suggestion. When I
edit word extensions, I don't see anything out of sorts. In addition,
the line doesn't look like one made for word extensions. I know
that's not definitive, but it's much darker and thicker and located
below the lyrics instead of even with the bottom of them. Can't point
you to a picture, because I'd have to print, then scan and I don't
have a scanner.

The event is tonight, and I'm not going to re create the document
today, so I'll just hand out the part and apologize to the musicians
for the errant line.

Thanks again, Noel and Philip for taking the time.

I loaded the original file and created a ~.ps file. I dragged that

general pattern of pages where we have about ten pages of stuff like
this:

**
Those two different kinds of patters repeat a bunch of times till we
get to the end of the 320 or so pages.

I know some of you could make sense of what was going on there, but
honestly, I don't think I have the skills to understand an
explanation, much less try solutions at this level.

However, when I double click on the post script file, it is opened by
the Mac app Preview. And sure enough, the line is there.

So it looks like I've imbedded some character that draws a line at
that point. Best solution is probably to re create the file.

I don't have time (as I just said in a previous post) to redo the
whole file today, but I'm convinced that it's the only way that I'll
get a clean print.

Thanks all for your time.

[Finale] Collaboration Mac PC

I use F2007 on a Mac (10.5.8) and a friend has just asked whether it's

like this:

02DE 03CB 0837 0AF2 B08E B08E 3E9F
4855 9AAD 9AAD

I've always assumed this was data about equalization and such.

Now I've put some files up on the web that were copied from my
machine and they have this kind of data in the comments fields. Will
this change the way these files play for others using iTunes? An
example would be the third file on this page:

 http://tearesofthemuses.com/Listen/

Is this a problem? Should I clear these comments before uploading?

Sorry David, I don't have a definitive answer.

However, as a long time Mac/iTunes user, I'd like to contribute some
guesses. First of all, I'd be amazed if items in the content field
affected playback. Secondly, I thought the adjustments like the
equalizer were for playback only so if you wanted to capture an audio
performance which used the playback settings of your particular song,
you'd have to burn a version with your settings. Couldn't confirm
either of these beliefs with a quick query of the Apple knowledge
base, however.

It's always when you're working on a project, isn't it! Since F06 is

you think that's possible.

I'm hoping that someone using F09 can make suggestions, but while you
wait, take a look at instructions for Garritan. The symptom you've
described sure seems like it's related to Garritan trying to pass
along the samples to Finale. Are there settings in Garritan that
would lessen the volume of data that has to be exchanged?

I also note, that the minimum requirement for Tiger (OS 10.4) is 256

extensive trouble shooting session at MM and MOTU without success. I
went so far as to reformat the system disk (using the option that
takes like a day to write over the whole disc), install all software
and updates and still got the Finale Crash on Start. Removing
MOTUPCIAudio.kext would let Finale run, but then, of course, DP
wouldn't run and all audio went to the computer speaker. Rather than
use a separate startup disc with F08 and no PCI driver (and have only
sound from the computer speaker) I decided to stay with F07. Here is
my setup:

Right, same on the Mac. So if the frame uses a flash card, you need
to mount it on the computer in some way. The computer needs to have
some kind of card reader interface. Might be a camera, printer, could

Good question, and one that only you can really answer.

What I have found in working with Sibelius5 is that it is as easy to
get

data entry as Finale's Speedy Entry is. I can do the initial entry
equally fast in both programs. What I like in Sib5 is that you can
ctrl-click to select non-contiguous objects to work on --

a large number of articulations is easier in Sib5 than in Finale up

[Finale] Mac F2008 Crash on Open

2007-09-23 Thread Dick Hauser

If any mac owners have the time to test.

In working on my problem of F2k8 crash on open, I've noticed that the
Audio Midi Setup pane of OS is set to 2-ch 24-bit. The MM tech
mentioned that Finale only wants 16 bit, but since the crash seems to
happen when Finale is initializing midi (not Core midi, after that)
he decided not to pursue it. Just for laughs, I decided to try
booting with the Audio Midi Setup set at 16-bit. However, the format
pull down for Audio/Midi Setup has no option but 24-bit.

The only place in my system that I've found so far that can change
bit depth, is in Digital Performer which has a preference pane which
allows one to specify the bit depth of newly recorded material.
Changing that back and forth seemed to have no effect on the Audio/
Midi Setup configuration.

So I'm curious, does any one have options in that Audio/Midi Setup
pull down?

Your HAL (hardware Abstraction Layer) is crashing.

This most likely is
either your MIDI and/or audio device driver are crashing. Are they up
to date? What audio interface are you using? It looks like a PCI
device, is it?

Audio interface is MOTU PCI 424 connected to a MOTU 1224 and 2408 MkII
Midi interface is MOTU MTP/AV

Drivers are:
Clockworks 1.51
PCI424 1.31
Cuemix 1.42

Does AMS see them correctly?

Sure seems like it to me. I can do a midi studio test and get noise
from both of the outboard devices (Emu Morpheus and Alesis DM Pro).
Keyboard input is appropriately direct to the device specified in
clockworks.

Does QT communicate both audio and MIDI
properly.

Yes. I've loaded a midi file into quicktime and it plays just fine.
Exported that to the desktop as midi and then dragged to DP5 which
played without a problem (after changing output for midi to my Emu
and DMP.

Have you tried Safe Boot (Shift_Boot Shift Login)?

No. I'll try that later, but I'm flying blind. I don't know what
that might do to help (just my ignorance).

If app is crashing and tech support doesn't want crash log is simply
wrong to me.

indeed.

So I spent some time this morning trying to see if the drivers were
up to date. I'm a bit confused. Downloading the the MOTU Audio
Installer and the MOTU USB OSX Install v 1.3.6 results in two apps
for audio and for cuemix. On set is for PCI and the other not (MOTU
Audio Setup vs MOTU PCI Audio Setup). The PCI Audio Setup version is
1.31 while the Audio Setup version is 1.4.4. My thinking is that the
MOTU PCI apps are the ones that I should be using since the interface
is a PCI card. That's born out by opening the MOTU Audio Setup app
which has only one general option (already checked) which is Launch
MOTU Audio Setup when hardware becomes available.

I'm going to see if there is a battery in the MTP/AV

And DP 5.12 seems perfectly happy.

I needed to print a few sheets of music so I booted Finale 2007 and
It loaded, but after printing, I got a crash on quit.

And the computer is a Dual 2 GHZ PowerPC G5 with 4 GB ram running OS
10.4.10

One of the Klezmer books that I have is The Compleat Klezmer by
Henry Sapoznik. He often uses that same notation. His version of
Baym Rebin's Sude, however, is up a step in E Ahava Raba mode. There
are 25 or so pages at the beginning of the book that supply some
context and include a few pages that talk about the common modes and
structure. It's a bit pricey, though at $20. Ahava Raba mode on D
is kinda like D if adding a flat 2,6, and 7 retains any of the
original major scale ;-) Common chords would be D, Gm and Cm.

Good Luck

I missed that request, Hiro.

I offered up the crash log but the tech didn't want it. My initial

it all. I'll send it to you off list.

Barring that, am I right in thinking that you have 2 X 2 GB
chips? Try removing one and see if it crashes. Then try the other
one.

OK, I'll run Mem Test tonight and see what I get. I have 4 1 GB
chips (that need to be installed in pairs, I think). That's a
different configuration than 2 X 2 GB, right?

That's OK. You just will have to test them by removing and
replacing them in pairs. You could even mix pairs to track down
exactly which chip out of the two is acting up, in fact, you will
probably have to do this at some point.

Thank you again, Christopher. You're right, we may get to that.

rember did not find any errors on all the memory (although I didn't
run it with the option to turn off the finder - I'll start that
tonight). I called MM support. They were fine. Professional,
courtious, efficient.

We looked at the startup screen and noted that the crash occured when
the message initializing midi came up (after the initializing Core
Midi) and so started to look at possibilities that something there
was amiss. We moved the Plug-in components out of the
Library=Audio=Plug-ins=Components folder at the user and system
level and still got the crash. We disconnected the midi interface
(MOTU Midi Timepeace AV) and still got the crash with and without
the plugins.

After that, MM asked for a copy of my system profile and promised to
study the problem more tomorrow. I did a reinstall just because I
had the time and we'd run out of ideas, but still no joy. My bet is
that when the tech gets back to me, he'll be on the trail of bad ram
as you have suggested.

[Finale] Unexpected Quit on Start

2007-09-19 Thread Dick Hauser
This is a surprise, since it was working yesterday. Well, not
entirely true, I guess, since I did get this message once in a while
but a restart of the application always worked.

I'm on FMac2008.r2
OSX 10.4.10
Dual 2 GHz Power PC G5
4GB Ram

The first part of the error report looks like this:

***

Date/Time: 2007-09-19 18:35:38.946 -0700
OS Version: 10.4.10 (Build 8R218)
Report Version: 4

Command: Finale 2008
Path:/Applications/Finale 2008/Finale 2008.app/Contents/MacOS/
Finale 2008

Parent: WindowServer [70]

Version: 13.0.r2 (13.0.r2)

PID:265
Thread: 0

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS (0x0001) at 0xfffe

Thread 0 Crashed:
0 0x8b94 __memcpy + 1012 (cpu_capabilities.h:189)

Of course, it follows with 25 or 30 threads of similar looking stuff,
all of which means nothing to me. I get the splash screen and it
looks like the crash happens when the startup gets to the point of
initializing midi. I'll give MM tech a call tomorrow, but I'm
curious to know any ideas from the list.

Worked last time I used it. Since then, I've defraged the drive
where my documents/projects are kept, but that's not where the apps
are. Can't think of anything else I might have done to upset
things. I reinstalled an HP printer driver after deleting the old
one. Printer seems to work fine.

I restarted a few times. Shut down and restarted after a few minutes
rest. Repaired preferences and repeated the restart series. Deleted
Finale preferences and tried again. That's about all I know to try.

Under the Midi/Audio pull down (2008) you can look at Import midi

suppose, that Finale is keeping a midi value of a sixteenth
(followed by a sixteenth rest) for a staccato 16th, but I really
don't know.

i haven't been back to this yet, and won't before tomorrow so i
can't verify this will do it, but if there are also 16ths, how does
this affect it? or is min. dur. some kind of MIDI interpretation
setting?

Right, if there are 16th's else where in the music, this method won't
work for you. Also, upon reading this, however, it occurred to me
that you want to adjust settings for export since that's what you're
wanting to do.

Re: [Finale] Semi-OT: Attachments are back in my posts

2007-07-01 Thread Dick Hauser
Yesterday, the wife was expressing frustration at not being able to
open an attachment. It was winmail.dat. I said that I just always
ignored them, but since she was looking at an email from a person
that could have sent an attachment. I found this site:

http://www.gpc.edu/~jbenson/resource/winmail.htm

which explained that the attachment was just a format file used by
outlook.

If I remember correctly, I don't think that is exactly the problem
you all are dealing with, (I admit I haven't been paying much
attention to this thread) but perhaps scanning this site would give
you some ideas. Best of luck.

Jim,

I'm not noticing any attachments to your posts.

But I'm on a Mac (maybe there is some sort of filter set) or perhaps
the List has been set to filter out attachments automatically.
