Simultaneously, I run another Retrospect on another NT4 server for
disk-based quickies. I've also tested this entire process on W2K Server and
Adv. Server, and it works great, even spanning Active Directory.

Michael,
Try making a storage set for each tape you want to use in your backup
script. If your backup script is set to "full" or "recycle" (depending on
your version of retro) the backup script will overwrite the tape when it's
re-inserted.

I believe if you have a storage set named "Bob" and you erase and name all your tapes in a magazine, "1-Bob"..."8-Bob, etc. (assuming an 8 tape mag) ANY other backup set assigned to that script will be able to use those empty named tapes. Only after they have data on them does retrospect really a
o manually assign an empty tape to a storage set. If you name an empty tape now, Retrospect still sees it as blank and will use it however it sees fit. Granted, that's a feature, not a bug. But it would also be a good feature to override that feature. :-)

I think as long as the AppleShare server is running when you do your backups, permissions get backed up automatically. If you ever have to restore an entire ASIP volume, following the Retrospect instructions (you do a second restore for privs.) works just fine.

Well, this isn't *exactly* germain but we've taken a lot of calls in the
past 6 months about the erroneous "file sharing could not be enabled"
message.
It seems to crop up mostly on OS9 computers running multiple users or
networked MM and on laptops when switching locations. Note that file

Just upgraded an old fileserver (7300) to OS9 and can't see the tape drive
(Sony SDT-9000 DDS3)... checked the cables, no other scsi devices, works
fine under OS 8.6 is this related to retrospect 4.2 or is there an OS
update somewhere?... any help or suggestions very appreciated!!
