Re: Winamp question

2017-07-30 Thread Chris Skarstad

Hi

Under dsp/effect, there should be a section called media library. I
would hesitate to delete or remove any of these plugins unless you're
absolutely sure you want to get rid of them. The absolutely safest
thing to do is to hit alt plus l and hide the media library window from
appearing. If you really want to get rid of the plugins though, the
safest one looks like it might be one called Nullsoft library, and
another one called Online services. But like I say i haven't removed
these, so approach with caution. I have no idea if winamp requires
these plugins to function. That's why I've just hidden the media
library window. Better to be safe than sorry.

Re: MP3 Is Dead!

Geez, such negativity around here!

There is nothing in the world wrong with a 320 k mp3 at 44.1 khz stereo.

Listen on a good set of speakers and you will see. Not as good as a

wrong with it.

MP3 has had a truly remarkable run when you think about it, almost 20
years and the format has ben at the heart of changing the way we
listen to music.

Now there are more efficient formats such as AAC out there and
Lossless compressed formats such as FLAC, storage space has increased
and so it goes.

There will be people who use MP3 for a long time to come but those
will become fewer as more people adopt other methods.

I think that's just the point. If you're a real audiofile who enjoys
high end audio from a device, and you're really picky about how stuff
sounds, the VR stream ain't for you. Despite all the bad press the
player has gotten here, i'll still purchase one in the next few days and
report my findings. I do think Bluetooth functionality is something
that is lacking and needs to be in a future update. If some of the
other specialized players can have it, so can the stream. But i'm
buying it, fully aware of this and I'm certainly ok with it.

I'll also report on the speed of downloading books via online services
like BARD. I can always download the books manually and put them on the
stream that way. It's good to know there are multiple ways of getting a
particular job like that done.

Yep, convenient may be but the unit does have its limitations as
we’ve discussed here, the Wi-Fi connectivity being a very serious
limitation and - given the speed of the Wi-Fi - one wouldn’t really
want to try and download a good quality audio stream.

And again we come to that bloody awful internal speaker.
Another interesting point and its not critical just an observation,
I wonder why Human ware didn’t include the ability to be able to
browse NAS storage devices or other computers on a network for
files? Just about every other device I know of these days - that
can play Internet radio stations - haas this handy feature which
and I reckon it would be an absolute boom! for users of a VR Stream.
Perhaps I’m talking about a future VR Stream update though
hHumanware take my advice, don’t make the update too big or it will
take until Christmas for the VR Stream users to download .
Regarding my own streaM/ Its found a good home so I’m happy about
that.

Hi!

I just bought one of these units and would like to make comment on my
purchase.

Firstly I think that the unit does a brilliant job for what it is in
most respects.

The sound from the internal speaker is a little muffled however - having
already heard a VR Stream - I was already prepared for this, a bit of an
annoyance one might say so to overcome this I use a small BUniden
hand-held amplified battery speaker I've had for years, cost me $25
about 7 years ago, pity the Stream doesn't have Bluetooth but I guess a
product can't have everythint.

Now I don't know whether this is my unit in particular but I have
noticed that the downloading of data seems to be incredibly slow
compared to other devices I have on my network, I used the "Check for
Updates" function and - according to that - the firmware is up to date,
well at least the data does get downloaded I guess.

There's a hell of a lot of functionality packed into the VR Stream box
and a lot of this - such as the Internet Radio, podcasts and so forth -
I won't bother using - given I already have better solutions for that
sort of thing - but for those who don't the VR Stream provides a great
entry level to the world of Internet Radio and Podcasting.

Getting online with the Vision Australia library was a snap so I
downlaoded a couple of books.

Again, I have other Apps and so forth which I prefer to use myself but
the Stream is convenient for reading, no doubt about that even though I
read all my newspapers these days straight from the web site its good to
know I have a reliable backup.

From: Gordon Smith gor...@mac-access.net

Good afternoon, or whatever it is in your time zone, everybody!
Finally, finally, Mac broadcasters have a game-changing product which
I can now tell you about.
Today has seen the long-awaited release of MegaSet 6.0 for MacOS.
This new version introduces over 50 new features, the most crucial
of which, for those
of us in this group who enthuse about such things, is accessibility!
Full VoiceOver support now exists within the product, and although I
have only just
started configuring the beast, I am confident that it will be
possible for VoiceOver users to take advantage of this excellent new
product.
I have been speaking to Fidelity Media for a couple of years now,
helping them here and there to work on accessibility. It is to their
emended credit that,
although it required a total rewrite of their user interface in order
to comply, they have stripped their application right back to the
bare bones, and
fully implemented Apple’s accessibility guidelines to introduce the
kind of accessibility which, to be blunt, even die-hard Station
Playlist Creator users

would give e their eye teeth for!
My only query to their technical people is whether it is possible to
play non-iTunes-compatible material within their app. I’m hopeful
that this will indeed
be the case but, to be honest, if it isn’t, there’s always Apple
Lossless audio that one can use in order to gain a little bit of
extra quality for low

file storage as opposed to MP3.
My understand is that MegaSeg 6 can be used with NiceCast for online
broadcasting, so there’s no need for a broadcasting configuration
within MegaSeg itselF.
I have listened to the audio output using their in-built mixer and it
rivals even the old OTS Radio Broadcaster app on the PC, and that app
has the best
software dynamics processor on the planet, or should I say, it did
have until now!
Speaking personally, I am ecstatic! This means that, since Duxbury
Braille Translator now also runs under MacOS, and since I can access
all of the spreadsheet
documents and other documents I need to use on the Mac, I no longer
require a Windows client! I have been waiting for this day for the
last 15 years, and
it’s finally arrived! Now, most of my Windows-based systems,
including my Microsoft Surface Pro 3 tablet, can be put into
mothballs. I only require Windows
on those systems responsible for my DNS and one custom data server.
But other than that, I’m now free of all that expense!
Oh yes, I almost forgot. You can get MegaSet 6 from here, for the
benefit of those who don’t know how to use Google, ;-)

Price of the Pro version may seem a little high to some. But priced
at $199.00 US, it costs considerably less than most professional
broadcasting solutions
which I have used under Windows; including Myriad, OTS Radio, SAM
Broadcaster and, accumulatively, Station Playlist Creator Pro. There
is none of this
silly annual maintenance agreement nonsense. So, if version 7.0 takes
them another 5 years to create, you still get all minor updates
within those five
years for free. That is what I mean by Accumulatively. Ob, and I
almost forgot, it even costs less than, or about the dame as,
RadioBOSS which, until now,
I have said for quite a while is the best broadcasting tool. Not any
longer! I plan to try and push our community station over to MacOS
or, at least, give

us that as an option.

I have no interest as to who uses which program, only that pitfalls
encountered, explained and worked around can help us
all, and merely to give as broad a view as possible within my
verry limited understanding.

It's strange but true, a particular set of users will have no
issues with a product, while others may find access almost
impossible.

So it is 1 big hurrah for exact audio copy.

Have a great day.

I have to admit to being annoyed with EZ CD converter as it is now.

What annoys me about this software is that it keeps changing all the time.

When ripping CD'S now the user has no way of knowing just how accurately EZ has
done or what errors it came across, the author of the software has - for
whatever reason - removed the ability to log EZ Converters actions.

Apart from that - assuming it works correctly which we can't say for sure now - its a
good bundle given its only $49 however Exact Audio Copy is free and - given a little
setting up and tweaking - provides good and accurate rips all the time and you'll
have the log file to prove it .

Regarding file converters? Well that's not a huge problem as all the
encoders/decoders can be easily obtained and Exactly Audio Copy - if you'd
prefer - can be configured to convert from format to format but Ez CD Converter
is very convenient for that sort of thing.

The other reason I'd use Exact Audio Copy if at all possible is that its just
plain far better when it comes to accessibility than Ez CD Converter ever has
been.

Re: Replacementfor Winamp

2016-11-10 Thread Chris Skarstad

hi. there's actually even an easier way.

what's happening is that it's a setup screen.
make sure that the Winamp classic skin is selected, and everything else
should be fine so just click the finish button and you should be good.
Everything that you want is turned on by default. to get rid of the
Winamp library, simply hit alt plus l and the library will go away. like
everything else it's a toggle so if you hit alt l again it'll come back.
you may receive a message asking if you want to import your music into
the library. tab to the no button and press the space bar and then press
alt plus l and everything should be set. by default, the equalizer,
main window and playlist editor are all turned on, but the equalizer
needs to be activated with the letter n while focused in the equalizer
window. you can press control plus tab to cycle between Winamp windows.

 hope that helps.

Don't worry about the options menu branch at this time.

continue back down the list, and when you get to

Aha! Ok, you're thinking of what's called Jump to time. in Winamp

that's it.

Winamp has a way were you can look and see where you're at in a file; you
hit that "control-J" and it'll take you to the exact spot where you left
off! Now Winamp may have a "bookmark" thing too (not exactly sure of how
this works) but the method that I have described works well for me! I'm not
saying that VLC doesn't do this, but I've yet to figure out how you'd do
that with VLC!

Winamp does this, provided you have either jaws or

sending me eleven-hour-long audio books, yes, all in one giant file, and
i find it impossible to navigate so bookmarks are a welcome feature.

Re: Becoming An Aussie: The Story Of Alexa, The US-Born Amazon Echo | Gizmodo Australia

2016-06-18 Thread Chris Skarstad
Not difficult at all. No other languages or regions were available.
Basicly, it goes like this

1. Plug in the echo, and it'll prompt you to open the amazon alexa app,
found in the iOS app store for free. It's a good idea to sign in before
you set up your echo so you can just get to the setup process.

2. Next you'll be asked to connect it to your Wi-fi network.

You'll need to go into your wi-fi settings on your iDevice and you
should then see a connection called Amazon xxx. the last 3 x's denote a
numberwords, so you could hear something like Amazon 72, or Amazon 32u,
or something similar. Either way if it says Amazon that's a safe bet
that it's been found.

3. Next, go back to the Alexa app, and you should see your wi-fi
network listed. Double tap on the name of your network and you'll then
be asked for your wi-fi password so your Amazon echo can

finally connect. Enter your password and press connect. It's as easy
as that! You can also enter your location to get content that's nearest
to you, but I'm not sure if Australia is

supported just yet. But it's not too bad. The app is mostly
accessible, just remember that the navigation menu element is your
friend. when you double-tap on that, it'll show a list of echo
connected devices, so choose yours from the list and you can manage it
from there. I hope this helps!

iTunes issue solved, here's some valuable info

2016-06-14 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi guys! Through a bit of research, I finally got my tones onto my
phone. To make this short and really simple, if you see that ominous
erase and sync button, do not panic! It will not actually erase anything
from your phone, at least as far as ringtones go. Just to be safe, after
pressing the erase and sync button, I was then able to see that old
familiar screen with the 2 radio buttons sync selected tones or sync all
ringtones. To be safe, I chose all ringtones and when i synced,
everything showed up just as it should. That erase and sync button and
the super-scary message that goes along with it is probably one of the
most poorly-worded error messages I've ever seen. So if you run into
this sort of thing, be sure to read the iTunes sreens very carefully, so
you'll be able to tell how many tones you're syncing. In short it works
and I'm very happy with the results.

Thanks guys!

Hi

I just don't want to bother them because someone else really might be in
a jam, and *really* need some accessibility help. I'm pretty good with
setting up an iDevice, I've set several up now but what if a newby is
calling for the very first time and is upset and confused? Sure, I
understand I qualify, but that doesn't make it so. If I can't find any
answers that may be what I have to do. I've seen a lot of stuff about
this on the internet, and the sollution to transfer purchases works for
some folks but not others. I very rarely do this but this is one of the
very rare times when I would love to see iOS become more like Android.
On a droid you can just put an SD card into a reader, or connect your
phone to the pc with a USB cable, and copy and paste your tones in the
proppper place, and they just work.

Clarification on the iTunes and custom ringtones issue...

2016-06-14 Thread Chris Skarstad

Hi folks

I feel like I may not have explained myself well enough before, so
please let me try to explain things a bit better by going through the
steps I do to do this, and then maybe someone with some knowledge can
tell me where I may be going wrong if I am. I don't know if I am that's
the thing.

I have imported a folder full of custom made ringtones into iTunes.
They're in the usual m4r format, and show up just fine when I go into
the view menu, then media kind and arrow down to tones and press enter.
So, they all show up and iTunes recognizes them just fine.

2. next, I already have my iPhone connected to my pc so I tab over to
the button labeled iPhone and press the space bar. I am now presented
with a screen that pops up and shows me several different things, most
notably a list of different playlists. if I am understanding this
correctly, all the tones I've already imported are marked to be synced
to my iPhone. Window-eyes does not read the state of this, so I'm going
purely on guess work here. So, I find the list of playlists by
arrowing down until I hear tones, and then I keep tabbing to the sync
tones checkbox. This is different from before, because there used to be
a radio button that said sync selected tones. But all I've got here is
a sync tones checkbox, so when I check it, iTunes displays the following
message.

Are you sure you want to remove existing music, movies, TV shows, books,
and tones from this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?
Music, movies, TV shows, books, and tones synced to Chris's iPhone”
from other iTunes libraries will be removed and items will be synced
from this iTunes library.'

My only 2 choices are, erase and sync, or cancel. The question isif
I hit that Erase and sync button will the only thing that's erased will
be my tones? or, will everything on the phone be erased? Why can't
this just be simple?

I hope someone will kindly correct me if I'm doing this incorrectly.

Thanks.

However, when I went to sync these newly made ringtones, I receive a message
from iTunes that says if i sync with this iPhone everything will be removed,
and the only thing I'll have left are these new tones. It says that it can
only sync with one iTunes library at a time. Or at least, that's how the
message sounds to me. It sounds rather ominous.

I don't want to lose absolutely everything on my phone just to add a few
ringtones. That seems rather silly to me. I know a lot of you guys on here
use macs, but remember, this is in Windows 10, using the most recent version of
iTunes, screenreader is Window-eyes 9.4.0.

Is it safe to hit the remove and sync button, or if I do that, will the only
thing that's removed are the tones? If all it'll remove is my current batch of
tones that's ok, but my concern is losing everything else such as apps, and
music. I'm a bit lost to tell you the truth. I hope someone has experience
with this.
Thanks for any help, guys!

Re: Winamp?

2016-04-11 Thread Chris Skarstad

Only place I know to get it these days is
http://www.ninite.com
The web page has a bunch of different check boxes for different
programs, Winamp is oneof them. So check the box for that, and then
press the space bar on the "get installer" button. the next page that
comes up lets you download the installer. The great thing about Ninite
is that you can check multiple boxes at once, so you can build an
installer with all your favorite programs. If you're getting a new pc
you can just run it, and it'll install all the programs, one after
another. Also, you can keep an installer around, and it'll install the
latest version of the program every time a new one comes out. These
installers run in the background so there's no next buttons to press, or
license agreements to answer yes to. Whoever thought of Ninite deserves
a metal.

recommendation for a low-cost digital recorder?

2016-04-02 Thread Chris Skarstad

Howdy folks

I have a friend whose interested in getting a digital recorder, she
doesn't have an iPhone, at least not yet. She would prefer to spend no
more than $100 to $120 tops, and since she's also blind it would have to
have some kind of voice guidance. Barring that, she'd have to have
someone go through the menus and learn them that way. Is there such a
recorder? I remember back in he early 2000s, there were lots of
recorders that you could use and they were really accessible, they were
great for podcasting. I'm not sure if such recorders exist nowadays,
but it would be great. I'm also kind of curious about this myself I
have to be honest. But if anyone has any ideas that'd be great!

Thanks folks!

Perhaps but you must understand that learning about Mac OS and VoiceOver is
only the beginning.

If you had no experience with windows, you would accept that the awkward
way things are done in MAC OS is normal but with a little experience of
windows you will find yourself trying to work out the mind set of those who
devised the OS and VoiceOver.

However, given your experience in windows you may find that something like
audio editing has a steep learning curve. Yes, I know that Garage Band,
Amadeus Pro and Twisted Wave are very good audio editing programs for
sighted people but for a blind person they can be very frustrating.

The question you should be asking yourself is: is there anything that I
would want to do that can only be done on a Mac and, if so, is it important
enough for you to justify the outlay, considering that most of the things
you might want to do are possible through your I Phone.

Anyhow, excuse me while I duck around the back to avoid the arrows and
flames of the Apple fans!

For most stuff on the pc, mono is fine. The only time you really need
stereo recordings these days is if you're out somewhere, and mostly
people use stereo microphones with a digital recorder, or with the

give you a straight answer, anything from Plantronics is pretty decent
for just recording your voice. Trust me it's a thousand times better

With Apple, they have an obsession with being thin as possible. From
what I'm told, the standard headphone jack takes up a lot of room, when
you compare it to something like wireless might take up. So, they want
to go with that so the phone will be thinner. and knowing them, you'll
have to use their specific ear pods. Actually, I'm hoping that regular
bluetooth will work since I have a few pares of those and i can just use

I also agree with another poster, if all this is just too much, there's

Hi Larry,

On this dell optiplex, there is a default sound card, which is a real tek..

Now here's the interesting thing.

The windows mixer, offers limited access to all the controls on the card.
Further, these controls can be accessed, using an app called "dell audio."
This opens up all the card's controls. It is not accessible by three screen
readers, but I suspect that screen mignification users may have a little
more opportunity.

Next, the version of drivers, either provided by Dell, or Real Tek. Certain
drivers, do nott offer the range of controls in the default installation,
but
also these drivers leave the card in a flatter audio state, with no extra
audio
effects turned on.

So what I am thinking, is, that it might be possible to turn off the effects
that you don't want, either by the driver file itself, or, access to the
control pannel installed by the computer manufacturer. I used dell in my
example.

Next you could argue, hell, why waiste my time. You could use the default
card
for screen reader, then a second card for your audio. I made the asumption
that you want to do more than just replay high quality audio. So in either
case
Larry, creative audigie do a usb card, with controls onboard. I tended to
think of a PCI audigie card, forgetting about the usb offerings.

good luck, and good listening.

Hi.

Well, that's kind of the whole idea of the software, to set it so
each chapter of the book is a separate mp3 file so it's a whole lot
easier to read. If you make the book into one long mp3, you'd have to
use some kind of bookmarks in the file.
If you really want this, you might be better off using something else

Yes you have to set it up yourself but once you do it is so customizable that
it can beat anything winamp can do. In fact, you can manage multiple playlists
at the same time, copy files from windows explorer, and make your won hot keys
for every single command in the program including menu bar, context menus,
now-playing context menus, and many many more.
Here is an article
I have been a foobar user for over 4 years.
And yes, I still have winamp on my machine and use it form time to time,
probably because old habbits die hard. But if I have to do anything for my

Stern live streams, karaoke files, and a playlist for when particular guests
are over. I can do all of this inside of foobar without having to load

The beauty part is managing multiple playlists in a tab style that makes my

Good luck to you though.

Well whether Winamp is the best or not is a matter of opinion, but I can say
that I don't know of any other player which has all of the features that I use
on a regular basis. Just a few that come to mind are:

1. Ability to play, pause, stop go back a track and go forward a track with one
finger of my left hand. This is important to me when I use Winamp to stream and
need to use my right hand to control my mixer.

2. The ability to move forward and back in five second increments with one
finger.

3. An option to stop playing after the current track in a playlist.

4. The ability to locate a track in Windows explorer and add it to the Winamp
playlist, either after the currently playing track or at the end of the
playlist.

5. The ability to search for a track in a playlist and move it to after the
currently playing track.

6. The ability to delete tracks from a playlist.

7. The ability to save a modified playlist.

8. The ability to cross fade tracks with a configurable plugin.

9. The ability to equalise the volume of all playing tracks with a configurable
plugin.

10. The ability to have title information show up in Edcast when streaming.

11. The ability to find the length of a track in time as well as being able to
find out the elapsed time and time remaining of a currently playing track.

12. The ability to select a sound card other than the default for the output.

13. The ability to edit and modify ID3 tags in MP3 files.

14. The ability to review tracks in a playlist by arrowing up and down.

15. The ability to search a playlist for tracks containing key words.

16. The ability to press enter on a track in Windows Explorer and have it start
playing without the focus moving from Windows Explorer.

17. The ability to set a placemarker in a file when using JAWS.

18. The ability to set bookmarks for streams.

19. The ability to play a wide range of audio formats.

20. The ability to jump to a specific time in a track.

21. The ability to play the last few seconds of a track (possibly a JAWS
feature).

22. The ability to easily get information about streams and tracks, such as the
bit rate.

I'm sure there are other features that don't come to mind immediately. If Dane
or anyone else can tell me of another free or low cost player which they know
will doo all of the above as well or better than Winamp, I would be willing to
give it a try.

Thanks,

Hi. I'm still using Windows 7 but I ran across some instructions from
the windows central site that just might do the trick. Try the below...

1. Open "Settings" and click on "System"
Windows 10 settings

2. Select "Default apps" from the left hand pane

Windows 10 default apps

3. Scroll down until you see "Music Player"

Windows 10 default apps

4. Choose your alternative

Windows 10 default music player

You'll see Groove Music is selected currently, and this is what you want
to change. Click on the box and you'll be presented with a list of apps
you have installed that are suitable for this category. Simply select

And below is the download for the above air check,

Not sure if it can be downloaded this way but try.

Finally, the below RSS feed is for all format changes for stations,

You can add this to Replay Radio too.

You can tell RR to go back in time and download all the files for you.

You would choose add show manually button within RR (replay radio) and paste in
the RSS feed URLs shown above into the RR9 scheduler. Also you will need to
change a setting to RSS / Podcast instead of Direct Download.

Well, see, there aren't any actual download links, hence my reason for
writing to the list. For an example of what I mean, go to

choose chicago. You'll see different links for different stations. the
first one says 103.9 the groove debuts. If you press enter on that link
and go a ways down the page, you'll find an html 5 player with a play
button. if you press it, the audio starts to play, but there's no
download link. What I'd like to do is capture that audio in an mp3
file. i'm hoping that makes a little more sense, sorry if the subject
line wasn't clear. :)

What I like about it is that it has a high and low impedence switch so it
caters for all kinds of headphones.

You get a short cable with it which allows you to connect your mp3 device

so you can use it as a sound card also.

I think it was called the Egghead or something like that.

Hi all,

Several years ago, I purchased a pair of AKG Q701 headphones for use with a
home stereo. These are, in my opinion, outstanding phones, especially
considering the price is around $200 or a bit more on Amazon. They are
wonderfully comfortable to wear for extended periods of time, more so than
any other phones I've seen, bar none. Recent reviews indicate some
dissatisfaction, since these are now apparently being made in China, rather
than Austria, the home country of AKG. But that's not the point of this
message.

I have tried my Q701 with the headphone output of my iPhone and find the
output of the phone isn't sufficient to drive the Qs well. So I looked into
the possibility of a portable headphone amp, such as the fiio e12, which has
pretty decent reviews on Amazon. It is not clear to me, however, how you get
the signal from the lightning port on the phone to the little amp, as it
doesn't seem to come with a cable. You can purchase a separate LOD from
fiio, but it has the old style 30-pin connector. You could then purchase an
official Apple lightning adapter at some ridiculously inflated price, of
course, and then I suppose the set up would work, although I don't think
this amp has a DAC, and I'm not sure if you'd need one of those anyway. So,
the question. What are folks doing who have head phones which are not driven
adequately by the crummy output stages found in portable devices like phones
etc?

Well, I figure as long as it works, why add anything new? I think it
works beautifully with the window-eyes scripts. Unless someone comes up

way it is.

I know that there are plenty of other good audio players such as

If you want to install multiple copies, you would install it to
something like c:\program files\(x86)\tapin Radio Beta and then make
sure to create a shortcut to it in a place that's easy to get to. This
way, if you have any issues both versions are installed and you can go
back to using the older one. I've had this beta for a few hours now and
it seems to be very stable. I'm not sure what people mean by having
accessibility issues with it, as I use Window-eyes and NVDA and haven't
had a single issue with the program. It's super solid and one of the
most accessible programs I've used in a while.

Re: beginners help with youtube?

2014-12-23 Thread Chris Skarstad

Hi
You can't really download from Youtube itself, it's mainly meant for
watching videos, creating playlists and sharing them with social media.
If you want to download the audio from it there are a few websites out
there that'll do this. One is

http://www.youtube-mp3.org

it's a very simple site with an edit box for the link for the youtube
video you want to download, a convert button and a few other basic
links. It's very fast, but the limitation is that it only converts
videos that are less than 20 minutes long. If you want something longer
than that, yes there are videos that are quite lengthy on youtube, the
site you'll want to try is

http://www.ListenToYoutube.com

One important caviot about this site is that it sometimes likes to throw
up a popup window that completely covers up the website, so to get rid
of this, simply press control plus f4 and the popup window will close,
but the website will stay open. After it's converted your video, it'll
have a link that says click here to get your download link, that's when
the popup window might happen. But on the resulting ppage, you'll find
a button that says, click hhere to download. it's a button so just keep
that in mind.

I hope some of this helps.

DreamHost hosting plan, as i have unlimited domains and
unlimited...well, everything. I won't charge you, and we can see how
you like it that way. Alternatively, subscribe to Google Apps pro,
host your domain there and use Google Groups on said domain, and have
rock solid lists for as long as you like. But please...no freelists.

Hi again guys

Glad I'm not the only one with this issue. I do believe Eset may be
part of the issue, because when I downloaded a fresh copy of tapin radio
from the rummersoft website, Nod 32 flagged the setup file as some kind
of virus, which it wasn't. I would remove Nod 32 as a test but I don't
want to put myself at risk from viruses and other bad stuff out there.
Even after completely removing the software, I'm talking about even
removing the program and all associated registry entries, a re-install
of the software exhibits this same behavior. I've not been able to get
ahold of them. They're on Facebook, but they've asked people not to
send them private messages as they won't see them. so this is a tough
one. I'm guessing we'll just have to keep trying. Glad I'm not the
only one with the problem.

Tapin Radio crashes when doing a search

2014-11-08 Thread Chris Skarstad

Hey guys

As the subject line says, as of this past week for whatever reason,
Tapin Radio has suddenly started to crash on me when performing a search
by typing something into the edit box on the main screen. For example,
when I type a station's call letters, a dialogue suddenly appears and
says, Tapin radio failed to load presets, would you like to download
them from our website? there are yes, no, and cancel buttons. when I
press yes, a download button appears but when i press it, the program
crashes. When i answer no, another dialogue appears and says, couldn't
load presets, pre-mature end of document, with an ok button. I've tried
completely uninstalling and re-installing the program with both the free
and paid versions and it still exhibits this behavior. I've been using
Tapin for ages now and have never seen this. I wrote to the support
folks for Tapin Radio and haven't received any kind of response, so I
figured i'd ask here. The only major change I made lately is that I
installed a newer version of Nod 32 antivirus on my machine, so I wonder
if the 2 aren't fighting with each other? So if anyone knows if
there's a fix for this, I'd appreciate it. I miss using Tapin to listen
to internet radio!

Thanks!

Chris

This very blindfriendly program will let you grab the information from

Re: Ripping With CDEX: Is It No Longer Possible To Have Cdex Title Tracks?

2014-06-24 Thread Chris Skarstad

I dunno if this helps but the version of CDEX I'm running is 1.70 beta 1.
So if you're running a different version you might try installing the
one I am and see if that doesn't work. If you're already running it, go
into your settings with f4, and in the remote cddb tab, set your server
to Freedb.Freedb.org, and make sure the connect to remote cddb check box
is checked.
If all that is correct and you still don't get results, maybe try
another cd that you know should have a listing, make it something super
popular, like oh, gosh i dunno a beatles cd if ya have one. Or something
like Dark Side of The Moon by Pink Floyd. I'm talking a cd that
absolutely should be listed, this way we can tell if it's the cd itself
not being listed, or if it's a problem with the connection, or CDEX itself.

It sounds like you're not able to contact the free db server for some
reason. in the cddb menu of CDEX, there's another option that says read

Re: my initial impressions of the turtle Beach Audio Advantage SRM

2009-05-16 Thread Chris Skarstad

Hi.
No, the card itself does not have any USB ports on it, you have to
use the provided USB cable with it. As for a PCI card? I'm really
not sure but I'm thinking either Turtle Beach or Creative will have a
card that will do that for you.
In another e-mail, you asked about it driving the internal sound
card, and I don't think it will. If you want your software speech to
come out of your internal card in your computer, what I did was I
bought an extra set of speakers and plugged them into the laptop, and
I set Window-eyes so that it comes out of the sigmatel card. All
other sounds are routed to my Audio Advantage.
So right now, my laptop's internal Sigmatel card handles software
speech, and everything else goes through the audio advantage. I hope
that makes sense?

Thanks.

Subject: my initial impressions of the turtle Beach Audio Advantage SRM

A while ago, I had asked about buying an external sound card, and I
eventually chose the Turtle Beach Audio Advantage SRM.
This card is tiny, weighing in only a few ounces, and it kind of
looks like a cigarette lighter at first glance.
It has 4 audio jacks 2 on each end of the card, the ones I've paid
the most attention to are the microphone, and the headphone jack,
which are on the same end.

This card also sports 2 stereo mics, a green LED light that blinks
when audio is present, and stays solid when none is playing. So if
you have some usable sight this might take a bit of getting used to.

I have a set of speakers hooked up to the card which handles my music
and windows sounds, and I have Window-eyes 7.01 routed to my laptop's
internal Sigmatel card. So I now have 2 sets of speakers instead of
one. This allows me to have more control over the volume of each one.
I have 2 volume controls to use now, but if I want to hear the speech
over the music more, it's easier for me, because I can keep the music
at the same level now.

As far as instalation goes, I had another friend of mine helping me,
and we learned a somewhat valuable lesson that I'm sure most people
probably know either through just being technically savvy, or having
the same experience we had. If you're going to install this card, be
sure to hook the card *directly* into your laptop or desktop's USB
ports, do not use a USB hub. If you do, the driver's won't install
properly, because the card can't draw enough power. The card is
recognized, but not to the same point as it would be via a regular
straight USB connection. So make sure you have a free USB port handy.
To install it, we first inserted the cd that came with the
card. If you're using window-eyes, you'll have to use your mouse
pointer, numpad plus pressed twice, and then you use your numpad 2
and 8 keys to arrow down to where it says setup. At that point,
press your left mouse button and the software will install. Then,
when prompted, please insert the cable into the card, and the other
end into the USB port.

You may lose speech after pressing yes at this point, but this can be
fixed. It's a good bet that the card is now active, so what you'll
need to do is plug a pare of headphones or speakers into the
headphone jack. If you hear speech, you're good to go. The headphone
jack is located on the top right handside of the card, you'll feel a
circular sort of socket or plug with ridges, and just to the right of
that, that's your headphone jack. The jack to the left of that one
is your microphone jack. When you plug a headset mic or any other
mic into that jack, the stereo mics on the card itself are muted, so
for the least confusing results, I would say you might want to have
something plugged into that jack all the time.

Initially, the software tried to install the necessary driver for the
card to function properly, but I had to reboot a couple of times to
get the process to work properly. Hey, I'm new to this and it was a
learning experience. So the driver installed and all, at this point,
seems to be working well. As for the SRM control pannel program, it
is definitely not very speech friendly, not without a lot of mousing
around. and even then, some of the screens look mighty
confusing. So the best way to customize things is to probably stick
to using the regular Windows volume control. That will allow ou to
set things how you want them. Overall, I'm very pleased with the
card! The install was a bit touch and go because, as I said we
weren't sure why things weren't working but after I remembered that I
had been using a hub, and I plugged the card directly into my laptop
USB

Hi. I don't see why not, as long as you can get JAWS to behave
itself. JAWS 10 will let you determine what card it works on,
whereas older versions required you to edit a .ini file to make that
work, and it wasn't always easy to do.

But I think y ou can do that.

Re: new sound card for my laptop

2009-05-10 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi. Wow this sounds like it's exactly the one I'm looking for! My
only question is, is the software that comes with it necessary? I'm
not going to be doing a whole bunch with surround sound, just maybe
occasionally recording from an external source like a casette deck or
cd player or something, so I don't need anything that's going to
require me to hook up tons of speakers. Space is limited here. It
does sound quite nice though!

go in there and check it out. The card runs about $70 u.s. and you can get
it at

I love it because I can use What you Hear and mix sounds from various
sources.

Turtle Beach Audio Advantage SRM

2009-05-10 Thread Chris Skarstad

Hi folks

I've taken the plunge and will be getting a Turtle Beach Audio
Advantage SRM for my laptop, after Kathy's suggestion.
Can anyone give me any tips for the instalation, it sounds like it's
pretty standard but if there are any pitfalls or sticking points, I
want to know so I can be prepared ahead of time. It definitely
sounds like the card I'm looking for, though.

Thanks!

Hi. I have tried both actually. Total Recorder didn't work very
well for me, and and I'm a huge pfan of Replay A/v, but I find that
when I record using either of those programs my computer slows to a
crawl and it's impossible to get anything done. I'm only working on a
gig of ram here and this laptop is about 2 years old so it's not the
newest thing around. Good idea though.

Hi Chris have you tried software that emulate the what you hear
affect? Total Recorder and Replay A/V are examples. They're both
shareware but are certainly fully accessible and probaby worth the
few bucks they cost. They emulate the affect by installing or using
a virtual sound card that digitally captures the output, so you
don't get any loss of quality in the recording.

external sound card for my laptop

2009-05-02 Thread Chris Skarstad

Hi guys
Like the subject says, I've got this Asus laptop, and I'm looking at
getting an external sound card, preferably USB that will allow me to,
among other things, use the what u hear, or stereo mix option so I
can record external devices like a tape deck or something similar, or
in other cases, allow me to record software speech so that I can
review a program and send it to somewhere like blind cool tech
or put it on my own podcast feed. I realize one of the Creative
Audigy, or possibly a turtle beach card will let me do this, so I'm
aware that it can be done. The thing is, I'd like to be able to do
the instalation of the software independently, I understand that when
you hook up sound cards and other audio devices, windows takes that
to mean that you want that new device to be the default card, and I'd
like to be able to get it installed without sighted assistance...I've
never done this before so it's something new to me. I've also heard
that some of the instalation programs for these cards aren't the
easiest to use with a screenreader. So if anyone has any thoughts or
recommendations of a card that's easy to install and does everything
I like, that would be awesome!

Thanks.

2009-05-01 Thread Chris Skarstad

Actually you can do this while the stream is playing.

 do the following.

1. press control plus tab until you get to the playlist editor.

2. Now you should see 1 item in the playlist, that's your stream.
3. Press control plus s and you'll be prompted for a file name.
you can call this file whatever you like, making sure that the file
has a .m3u extention.
Now save the file anywhere on your hard drive, or put it in a folder,
or save it as an icon on your desktop, either way works. So whenever
you want to listen to this station, find the appropriate file, press
enter on it and Winamp will come up.

As an aside, the bookmarks are actually saved in a text file called
Winamp.bm. so if you ever need to update the addresses of the
stations you listen to, do a search for Winamp.bm, open it in a text
editor and simply change the url

Well, I guess Winamp does this for you when adding the stream. If you

Press CTRL+S and save it like you would any other file. You can then

Re: Skype 4.0 with screen readers

2009-03-26 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi. Another thing you can do, if this hasn't been mentioned already,
is when you first install Skype 4.0, the menu bar will be there, but
your screenreader will not be able to read it easily. But we'll
change this by first hitting alt plus t for tools, and o for
options. In the general settings, change the radio button that says
skype, to classic windows. In other words, you'll see a radio button
that says, skype radio button checked, 1 of 2. change that so it
says classic windows radio button checked, 2 of 2. Also, both
screenreaders, those being JAWS and Window-eyes have scripts that
come highly recommended for making the contact list a lot more easy to use.

Hope this helps.

I use Skype 4.0 with JFW 10 and have found that with the third party

Hi Kathy and all,

ther is a pod cast somewhere of a fine fellow I think from the UK
where he reviews the Axux 900x. The pod cast is amazing in that he
had several things going including JAWS, something called Tank
Commander and I think Goldwave while he was recording everything
through his onboard mics. Does anyone know where that pod cast is?

Lol! So, can anyone in Geekland please help me see if I can set up VAC to
be able to record, either through Total recorder or Studio Recorder, both
mike and sound card output at the same time? Seems so simple, but I guess
it just isn't. Many thanks in advance.

Re: Need Help with RAR Files

2009-02-02 Thread Chris Skarstad

Hi.

Yup, this is exactly the case. When you have a file with the .rar
extention, it's exactly like, or extremely close to a .zip file,
which means it looks like it's only one file but when you open it, it
actually may contain several other smaller files. On Sendspace for
example, people have been known to use both .rar and .zip files to
send large files to keep them smaller. It's much easier to send one
much larger file than having to send several smaller ones. The .rar
or .zip files you see aren't meant to be converted, at least not when
you first see them. After you extract them, or unzip them in the
case of winzip, or XP's native unzipping support, you can do whatever
you like with the files contained in the archive. But you can't
actually convert a .rar file into something else.

I think .RAR is akind of hyperzip, or a superset of the .ZIP format. Have
had good luck with the program Winwrar or Winrar having seen it with and

There's a liberal evaluation period and it's about $39.00. They actually
got back to me on a complaint made during the EVal period.

finding recording software, was Re: I need some help please!

2009-01-29 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi. I've changed
the subject line to better reflect the question. You absolutely
can't go wrong with Replay A/V from Applian.

the software is very speech friendly and the company is very aware of
the fact that a lot of the users of the software are blind. It costs
a bit but is very well worth your investment.

http://www.replayav.com
is where to grab it. You can try it out as a demo that'll record
something for about 5 minutes. If you like it, you can buy it online
and you'll be able to record your show and save it in mp3 or whatever
format you choose. Awesome program!

Hi Peter. If you're running JAWS version 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, or 4.51,
and I'm guessing you are? Support for Winamp is already built
in. Just start using winamp and enjoy it. to get specific help,
press insert plus h for the window you're in, or insert plus w for a
set of keystrokes for any winamp window you might be in.

You can find it on other sites, but I still get it from winamp.com. If you
follow the Download Winamp link near the top of the page, you'll go to the
site http://www.winamp.com/player. There's a little dialog to fill out
beneath the heading Choose your Winamp. The dialog prompts you for things
like language, which version of Winamp you want (I always select full.) and
whether you want to be notified of Winamp announcements.

Where's the best place to download the latest Winamp? I went to
Winamp.com, but could not tell whether the program was loading with
either Window-Eyes or JAWS. I haven't upgraded in a while on my
 desktop computer.

Second, there used to be a way to display the url for the last stream
played in Winamp but I can't make it appear. I want to add a url to
my list of shows to be recorded with Replay/AV, but can't locate the url.

Thanks in advance for all help.

Re: Editing Audio Tracks

2008-12-10 Thread Chris Skarstad

Hi. Just so you know John, album is spelled a l b u m.
It's not one of those words that sounds obvious when it's heard
spoken quickly. But yeah, Winamp allows you to change the tag info
with alt 3, I'm not sure if Windows media has an equivilant but I'm
almost certain it does.

Hello Marvin,
If you know the name of the tracks, you can rename them yourself.
All you have to do is, have your curser pointing to the file.
Then hit your applications key, scroll up to properties.
Tab over to artist name or something like that, and just type in the
name of the artist and hit inter on it.
If you scroll up, you will find the field where the alvem title
goes, just type it in if you know it and hit inter.

This is what you will really see altogether.
At the top, alvem title, artist title, jonra if I'm spelling this one right.
Year and so on.
Tab over to the ok button and hit space bar or inter on it, and
you're all sat!
I hope this helps you with the first part of your question, I only
wish I had an answer for the other part of your question.

I am sorry that I don't.
My best regards!
 John.

Re: Why winamp?

2008-11-10 Thread Chris Skarstad

Hi.

In adition to what other people have said here, the hotkeys that are
built into Winamp are pretty cool. They may seem a bit strange but
when you look at it from using the keyboard it actually makes sense,
especially if you're familiar with using those old tape recorders
back in the day. while in Winamp, the letter x plays a track. c
pauses and unpauses it, b goes to the next song, and the letter z
moves you back a song if you're in a playlist.
obviously the b and z keys won'twork if you have a single song
loaded, but remember, the hotkeys i listed above are in Winamp, no
matter what you're using as far as a screenreader goes. I've never
used Hal so I can't begin to speak on its accessibility but others
might be able to. I can however, say that the Window-eyes scripts
that Jeff Bishop wrote are absolutely supurb and I highly recommend
them. For years I always hoped Window-eyes could have better access
to Winamp and it finally does!

At 01:32 AM 11/10/2008, you wrote:

Hi friends!
Actually i have been using foobar2000 for 4 years now.
However from the beginning it was a really neat and great player.
Though many functions i had in my first version of foobar2000 has been
removed.
For example, you now have to create your own hotkeys for play stop etc.
Now to my question.
Most people seems to use winamp and seems to be very satisfied with it.
But it seems to take up a lot of space though.
Now in the latest version of hal you can use winamp much more flexible than
before.
The screenreader has got new map files and scripts.
So i am thinking to start using winamp again after 4 years.
There is a streamripper plugin also for winamp.
But why should i use winamp?
More than what i've stated above.
Can the library feature be used?
Such as the shoutcast radio functionality i had in older versions of winamp.
Thanks in advance.
/Anders.

Re: New Winamp and Jaws scripts

2008-11-08 Thread Chris Skarstad

Hi

I think you might've gotten your hotkeys a little confused there. To
set a time marker, you press the letter m, all on its own.

This goes for both JAWS and Window-eyes as well.

Try that.

Mic goes mute when using the line recording plugin for Winamp

2008-11-05 Thread Chris Skarstad

Hey folks

This question isn't for me, I'm helping a guy get his Winamp set up
for broadcasting, and he has a really weird thing going on. He's
able to use his mic in all kinds of situations like sending voice
clips over Windows Live Messenger, he can record using recording
programs, basically the mic he has works just fine. However when he
uses Winamp, and the line recording plugin to broadcast, his mic goes
mute and he can't be heard at all.
He's using a realtech card, it says high definition audio, so I'm
willing to bet that's onboard sound. Is it possible that his mic
could be muted, but only when the line recording plugin is being used?
I'm familiar with the windows XP and 9x series of the volume
controls, like you can have things muted in playback but not in
recording. Is there a setting he needs to look at or change so he
can get this to work. Like I say, his mic works beautifully in all
kinds of other situations accept with the line recording
plugin. When he uses it, the Winamp title bar says line recording
just as it should but no audio. It's frustrating as you can
imagine. Any ideas would be really helpful!

Thanks folks.
