if the fonts are on top of transparency, try using the semi-flatten
filter BEFORE indexing. it makes the ofnts much cleaner usually.

Most of the things you are saying is true. I am not
sure though about the support for Chinese fonts.
Handling layers in Gimp is as easy as in Photoshop.
You can group them but you cannot clip them as in
Photoshop to create clipping mask.
What I am missing from Gimp is the Photoshop-like
layer

print image. Scaling up is not a good thing with
raster images.
For what it's worth, I tend to make all my screen shots for books and
magazines set to 250DPI, which produces a slightly larger print image at
reasonable quality.
