I use the credit line to cite the film number like this for the birth and
christening records, birth register template created at county level online
database:

citing St. Joseph County Marriage record, v3 p241 rn 82, FHL microfilm 2342469:
Michigan Department of Vital Records, Lansing, Michigan.

My source list name is Michigan - Michigan Marriages 1868-1925, images

As a general practice, I use the FamilySearch collection as the Master Source,
with the county, volume, page, etc. recorded in the Source Detail, although I'm
not particularly consistent.

For that particular database, I have used the template for Marriage Registers,
County level and the medium as "Online Images." I think my reasoning was that,
while the images were probably digitized versions of the FHL film, I viewed the
online image and not the microfilm. For completeness, you could put the FHL
film no. in the Detail Comments or Text.

Subject: [LegacyUG] SW Template for databases on FamilySearc

I have found a marriage record for one of my relatives on the
FamilySearch website. FamilySearch gives the following as the citation:

"New York, County Marriages, 1847-1848; 1908-1936," database with
images, FamilySearch
(https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-9880-44672-9?cc=1618491 : 24
January 2016), Oneida > Marriage records, 1920-1922, vol 6 > image 352
of 514; citing county clerk offices from various counties, New York.

Using SourceWriter in Legacy, I could use the generic template "Online
database with images", giving "New York, County Marriages, 1847-1848;
1908-1936," as the Database Title and FamilySearch as the website, or
the more specific template for Marriage Registers created at County
level. In the latter case would it be correct to select
"Microfilm/fiche (Filmed by Family History Library)" as the medium, or
should it just be "Online images"?

This question is relevant to all databases (with or without images)
accessed on FamilySearch.

Aye, but even if I did find it, FreeBMD has Births AND Marriages AND Deaths

The credit line is for where your source got the information - eg your
source may be an online database of transcriptions of parish registers.
The credit line would say which parish register and who holds it. In
Ancestry terminology: Original data.

That's all very well, but why is there then no field for the information
itself?

The GRO index stuff is messy thought about in that way.

I still use a Basic Source for the GRO index. I'm wondering about how
I'll enter the new GRO birth and death indexes accessed on the GRO site
itself which have more information.

I find myself going back to Basic sources more and more frequently, because
Sourcewriter seems so difficult to use. It seems to ask for lots of
information that isn't available, and you end up with nowhere to put the
really important stuff, like where you actually found the information you
are

trying to record.

Where you found the information would be the repository and there is a tab
for that in the sourcewriter.

Hi Jennie,
Thank you.
It is not the event notes I wish to change, it is the event description.
But I thank you for the detailed explanation.

Here is what I have:
Event Name: Family Files
Event Desc: Blank
Event Date: Jan 1997

Here is what I want to have
Event Name: Family Files
Event Desc: Zink Data
Event Date: Jan 1997

I did an experiment yesterday that worked, sorta. And now cannot
remember exactly what I did. But I did get the event Desc inserted
globally. But, because I made a new file with all 386 folks in it -
which turned out to add the families. Did an 'oops' - anyhow, long story
shorter... I managed to get the Zink Data inserted. but then added the
people back in to a new master file and it duplicated them. Well, that
was ok because I had them tagged, but it unlinked some of them and to be
honest, I am not sure why it unlinked some of them.

Back to the drawing board this morning.
I did notice the event notes stuff which I hardly ever use. Played with
it a bit, but it will not do what I want.

You are probably right, what I want to do is not within the capabilities
of Legacy at this point.

When I run the report I can see immediately the count of “individuals with
insufficient date information” from which I can produce a search list and
investigate any issues.

After the list has been created I can view this in the current window (no
issues) but if I select “options – include married names” then the list seems
to revert to the results of a query I had run earlier which is totally
unconnected.

I have viewed the archives but cannot see anything specific to this issue.

Has anyone got a solution

See you are in Australia but assume you can use Yahoo.
Suggestion, open a free Yahoo account, their new system captures all emails
with the same subject line into one email stream

Use this email address for your Legacy Group
Do not download this email to your regular email software, read and store it
all online at Yahoo
I receive like 50 emails but they are all combined by subject so it turns
into a stream of only 8 or 9 emails in most cases
This keeps the info separate from your regular mail and off your computer
but still handy if you need to work with the information that list provides.

They allow you to make folders which you can move the legacy emails into by
subject if you wish to retain them for future reference.

Then you only see the list email when you choose to go to that

The alternative is to unsubscribe. Email lists are all or nothing.

TreeDraw program, in which one could format the lines, fonts, colours, etc.

can't see or print it on any reasonable size of paper or poster.

I have about 40,000 people in my database and anything over about 4-5
generations is too large to use. Some of my families go back 15-20
generations. In Legacy, you can create a chart of Fathers only that would span
that many generations.

In Legacy, use the Legacy Charting icon to the right of the Internet icon and
you can plot lots of different charts. I would suggest you try some of those
before purchasing other software.
In some of my testing of Legacy Charting, I have created charts of over 100
generations. The problem is, you cannot print that size of chart - it is just a
paper generator.

If you only have a few people in your database with only 3-4 generations,
then you could chart something useful to be printed.

Anyway, just my thoughts, you won't be happy with what you are asking for.

my Grandson.

1. I changed the Relationship settings from myself to my 3rd great-grandfather.
Then I used the Miscellaneous Search functions to set the parameters I thought
might produce the report I wanted.

2. Open the 'Search' Function, click on the 'Detailed' Tab
The first set - Select: Individual. Where: Dropdown box, select Surname. How,
Equal. What: I entered my 3 x G Grandfather's Surname: Averill

3. Second Set: Individual, Relationship, Equal to, Related
4. Third Set: Individual, Surname, Equal to, Simonaro [my Grandson's Surname]

Use 'and' in all the slots.
Then Click the 'Create List' tab at the bottom.
Guess what? My grandson is not related.
If I set the 'and' to 'or' in the 3rd set, it produces a list of 97 people who
are related.
The search list of the 97 people can be tagged and a report made.

Walsingham RD or Walsingham RD, Norfolk. I will, sometimes, add the parish,

Church events - generally follow a standard of parish, village, county,

Hence: St Mary the Virgin, Wiveton, Norfolk, England. This gets used for
baptisms/christenings, marriages and burials.

I'm having problems combining locations in Legacy 8.

Paradoxically it seems to work faster on my slower desktop computer with
Windows XP than on my faster laptop (with more RAM) running Windows 7.

On the laptop machine, particularly, it keeps popping up error messages. It
pops up something to tell me that there is no such county as La Salle county
in Illinois (I know that, that's why I was trying to combine it with an
entry

that had Lasalle county).

Then every time I combine two locations (with slightly different spelling or
punctuation) it tells me that there is an error and I must run file
maintenance.

Earlier versions of Legacy performed this operation much faster, without all
the annoying popups, and waiting ten minutes for it to locate the location.

Is there any way of at least turning off the popups, and of combining
several

locations at once without having to run file maintenance after each one?

Re: [LegacyUG] How to enter the following.

2016-02-24 Thread R G Strong-genes
The best way would be to just add the father's surnames and leave the first
names and spouses blank or use privacy brackets ie [[this is the father of
John Smith]]. If you start putting initials in for N.N. no name then it is
very likely that some one else researching will see that and start looking
for someone with those initials. I have been there and done that! For the
life of me I could not find all those people with the surname of UNK who was
in my database from an import that had been done when I first started out!!
So for unknown information it is best to leave it blank or insert those
privacy brackets as that is what keeps them private and not published.

To create the cousin, go to John Smith and add father, and enter him with
just the Surname and then go to him and repeat. You are now at the
grandfathers screen. You should now see him with no spouse with one mail
child, now just click in the children list box to add another male child.
This is where privacy brackets come in handy to separate the first names ie
[[child1]] and [[child2]] which will pop up a warning that you can tell it
to ignore. Note this will put an * in the exceptions box near the bottom of
the screen once you have a name for them don't forget to edit that box to
correct the exception.
Now navigate down by going to the new child and adding another male child
for David's father. Go to his father now Add Child and link to existing
person David. You now have the cousins linked.

Then you use placeholders for their parents and grandparents.

Since it seems likely that their fathers, at least, had the surname of
Smith,
you enter something like N.N. Smith for the father of one, and Mrs N.N.
Smith

for his wife. And N.M. Smith for the parents of the other, and Mrs N.M./
Smith as his wife. And for the parents of those two smiths you put Grandpa
Smith and Grandma Smith.

And then, voila! David and Simon are cousins.

And when you do find the real names, you substitute them for the placeholder
names.

I only use File ID for hard copy sources and mostly they're in Source detail.

While I find SourceWriter useful for some things, I find it less useful for
others.

For example, I don't use it for personal correspondence, because it makes
each letter or e-mail a separate master source, with too much detail
entered,
and not enough printed in footnotes in reports etc..

Re: [LegacyUG] Help, please

2016-01-24 Thread R G Strong-genes
Barbara,
Is the one on the desktop a folder or is it a link to your data folder? If
it actually a folder with just the familytreewip.fdb and user files
associated with that family file and it has the most current file
information then you can just copy all those files to your Data folder for
Legacy. Then open legacy and search for the file you want to open. Then
check your Legacy options and specify how you want to open legacy. It is
probably set to open the last file opened. When you are working on Legacy
the changes are always in the file you are working on where ever it is
located. So when it closes if it doesn't ask for a backup it will be the
same folder that you opened it from, if you happen to have that file in a
different folder and open it from that folder you will not see the changes
as they are actually in a different file. When you back up a file either by
requesting a backup or when you close and it asks for one make sure the path
is where you want it before you click save. The newer versions actually
append the date and time to the backup so if you have several with the same
file name you will know which is the latest backup. It is always best to
keep your working family files in the same location so you know where your
up to date files are. If you need to store them on another drive then I
would recommend just saving the backup file of it on another drive and when
you want to work on it then you can restore the family file to your working
directory. I use google drive and only store my backups to that drive. I
also store a copy of the legacy installation file, registration file, and
user files for Legacy in there own folders on the google drive. I have both
Legacy 7.5 and 8 on my computer so I have a folder for each version on the
google drive for the corresponding programs.

If you have different updates to your family file in more than one folder
and you want to get them all into one file and they are copies from the same
family file then you should be able to use the intellishare options under
the find duplicates merge function. Open the oldest file and merge the
changed files into it.

from the help file:

Here is how IntelliShare works:

Form a research group of two or more people. (Each must be using Legacy.)
One person in the group is designated as the "Keeper of the Records" (Keeper
for short). This person keeps the master Family File. Legacy automatically
marks all the records in the Master Family File with a serial number that
uniquely identifies each individual. The Keeper now sends a copy of the
Family File to all the other people participating in the group.

Any or all members of the group can make changes to existing records, delete
or unlink records, or add new records to the family file. The Keeper can
also make changes and additions to the master file.

After an agreed upon interval of time, all members of the group return a
copy of the family file to the Keeper for merging and reconciliation.

The Keeper then follows this procedure:

Import all copies of the family file into the master copy (after making a
backup of course).

Press the Merge button and choose Find Duplicates.

>From the Merge Options window, click on the Special Searches tab and choose
the IntelliShare option.

Press the Continue button in the upper right corner of the Merge Options
window. Legacy searches for all records with matching IntelliShare values
and automatically merges those that have exactly the same information. At
the end of this process Legacy displays the records where one or more
persons have made changes. Legacy also looks at all surrounding links when
deciding to merge. If the parents, spouses or children are different in any
way, the two individuals are displayed along with a message describing the
situation. All these messages are also saved in a file called MERGE.LOG.
Legacy offers to display this file at the end of the merge process.

The only records the Keeper has to look at and merge together are the ones
that have been changed by someone in the group.

At the end of the merge process, a list of any newly added individuals is
displayed.

After the merge is complete, the Keeper sends a new copy of the family file
back to the other group members for more changes and additions.

Legacy's IntelliShare greatly reduces the drudgery involved when going
through the typical match-merge process needed to combine two or more files.

hope this helps,

Russ

Tree 12 has 1 at RIN 12638, Coppers, Richard “Dick”.
Tree 13 has 1 at RIN 16149, Pratt, Jonathan.
Tree 14 has 1 at RIN 20350, Snyder, David.

The reason for including all of these trees in the one TNG Tree is that a
visitor may come along and have a connection to one of the trees that may lead
to a connection to the main tree. You may notice that there are high number
RINs that have only 1 or a few individuals, they are in my file as unconnected
or unproven connections to my main line. They may be witnesses on a document
usually two or more documents that I have not found a link to, or as Trees 2,
5, 12 and 14 are users on my site who may have or have not submitted a lineage
to me for inclusion or connection. A few like the Halladay and Wallace Trees
are there for historical or legends links. The Halladay surname is my largest
and legend has them descendants of Sir William Wallace, of Scotland, thus Tree
3.

There is a privacy policy on my site for new users that tells the criteria for
becoming a registered user and that they should be at least connected to one of
the surnames listed on the site and show their connections. Since my site has
been around for awhile (when it was first on AOL>rootsweb which was data mined
and had lots of errors and someone claimed it was their tree a whole another
story>to my own website powered by TNG) I have reduced the number of separate
trees and have merged a couple and deleted a whole line of unproven Halladay’s
from a bogus tree created in the 19th and early 20th century! Thus the RED Font
DISCLAIMER on my site that not all sources have been checked!
Does that help?

Thank you so much everyone for your imput.

I figured out some of the problem. I think there was something wrong with my
"Main" legacy file. When I exported the whole file as either "gedcom for
legacy" or "new legacy file" Jessie and Alexander were unlinked. So in the new
legacy file I relinked them and then exported as "gedcom" and everything was
fine.

R G Stong-genes I really appreciate your explanation of how you export for TNG.

I have one more question. Did you split you Legacy file into different files or
did you make focus groups to export so that you could import the separate trees
into TNG?

Dale,
You can have 10 saved source citations in the source citation. When he right
clicks on the triangle the list of those citations appear where you can
click which one you want. When you have the source-citation clip-board open
in the bottom right there are buttons where you can Clear, Load, or Save the
citations to Disk.

So when he does a right click they are not on his source clipboard. When

I have 14 trees in my Family file of 25,617 individuals, however, since I am
the only admin on my TNG site there is only one “Tree” on the site that
includes all the individuals in my 14 Trees.

Tree 1 has 20397 individuals at RIN 1, me.
Tree 2 has 40 at RIN 13655, Broad, Eliza Jane.

Re: [LegacyUG] Household Staff on Census Forms

2016-01-13 Thread R G Strong-genes
Steve,
I list everyone in that household in the source citation and/or notes. If you
are using shared citation they can be added without being added to your
database. They may prove to be connected later on or link to someone else. You
never know, ie one of my ancestor’s son later married the servant that was
listed on a prior year’s census. The only place I was able to locate a
connection to her. Another example one of my ancestor’s was listed as a servant
on a later census when he was in his twenties and was the only way I traced him
through the years. In my own family, my 3rd gr-grandmother Strong worked as a
servant in a Strong household in the county we know live in when they emigrated
here from PA>OH>MI in the late 1800’s sometime between 1860 and 1870. We had no
idea how this Strong family was related to our Strong family until my cousin
had her brother submit his DNA and I had our DNA submitted and joined the
STRONG DNA study at FamilyTreeDNA. And then we knew which way and where to look
to make a connection. More on that can be found on my site under the DNA study
links.

I am looking at a 1910 United States Federal Census that has 2 people listed as
part of the household; a cook and a nurse. I do not include these people as

Did you create a private gedcom? I would recommend that you create a GEDCOM for

Options page:
Type of file to Produce
Produce file for: Legacy
Character Set: ANSI
Break Note lines every 80 characters (at nearest word)
if you have and check it if you don’t want them
appearing on your site.

Show double dates if you want them to appear if unchecked Legacy won’t use the
option setting for double dates.

go to Privacy Options page
Make sure nothing is checked if you want “Living Individuals and Their
Families” to appear and you want TNG to control the privacy options set on your
site!
Under Override Private Settings:
Check how you want those individuals to appear.
I have no checks on this page.
If you want Compiler info in your gedcom go to that screen and fill it out.

Go to Customize screen:
The Default items available should appear over to the right side then you can
remove the items you don’t want on your site.
Then:
as you may know the tags with underscores are proprietary and will need to be
accepted or denied in TNG so it knows what to do with it.
Remove the ones you don’t want to appear on the site or don’t need.
Remove the _Tag#s if you aren’t using them or If you are and want to define
them on your site then leave them (ie I haven’t tried this yet but I have some
of my tags are defined and do not change, Tags4-9, I use Tags 1-3 for temporary
tags, so my tag five is defined as “Sources not verified yet” and My TAG7 is
defined as “Possible Living male Strong descendant” since I am in the STRONG
DNA study and use that to work on their lines and possible invite them to join
the study (hic more on that available on my site)).
Remove _UID (only needed if you are merging GEDCOM files so if you plan on
doing updates on line and gedcoming back (not recommended since a GEDCOM
changes all Source Writer sources to Basic sources) then leave it in).
Go through the list on the right and remove any other tags you don’t use or
don’t need on the site. If you have LDS info turned off in your file they won’t
appear
even if the tag is available on the right. you can remove them to make the list
shorter.
optional remove the _FamilySearch ID and link tags if you don’t want them on
your site or leave them if you want visitors to look at them on Family
Search.(if you know HTML programing recommend editing the links or checking
them to see if they open in a new window or tab so your visitors don’t leave
your site).
Not sure what the Label Groups tag is used for.

Groups of Items to Exclude:
The To-Do items if you didn’t remove the _TODO tag and you checked it on the
first page.
if you don’t want the Address/Phone numbers appearing on site check it.
and any other items you don’t want to appear check them.
once you have the items you want and don’t want and you plan to use it often
then click on the Save List button and name the file. Then when you make a new
gedcom just click Load List when you come to the Customize screen(note they are
now in alphabetic order and some of them do not have the astrisk in front of
them but they are there as they are the basic ones).
When you are done click on OK

Then finish and create your gedcom.

before you upload the full gedcom I would go to your TNG site and on the
import/export options screen do an import events only then you can check any
new ones that have uploaded and click to accept them and the proprietary ones
you can define them on how they will appear on your site. If you would like to
know how I defined mine then I will post a link to a page that has that tag
showing and how it appears on my site still ver 9.2.2 though. Some of them I
just leave as denied as I don’t use them and usually will appear on the next
upload unless I removed it from the GEDCOM if you correct it then delete the
unused ones.
AS THE Table is updated unused ones will still be in the table unless you
purged the table before the upload which some people do. There is a thread
somewhere on here on which tables some users purge before an upload
particularly if you have went through your master place names and cleaned it up
you will want to purge that table before you upload (ie changed USA to United
States then all the places with USA will still be there no people connected to
it.)
Hope this helps a little but I think maybe your privacy settings for your
gedcom is causing the problem.

That information would be helpful.

That is what I thought. So the best way would be to clean up the one he sent

the new people that he entered and then just use the advanced sourcing for the
tagged people and put it under the general source for them. You could also tag
them by their creation date ie all those entered after the date you gave him
the file. Once you have the database to your liking then you can use the
intellemerge function to merge them together. For more info on how to do that
see the help file on intellemerge.

Re: [LegacyUG] Seeking suggestions for sorting through a database mess

2015-10-15 Thread R G Strong-genes
You did not specify what format of your database you gave him. If it was the
Legacy database itself then you would want to use your original file as the
main and the other one as the research. Then you would work on the research
database and clean it up as to how you want places formatted and other stuff
to your standards then check it for errors. Once you have it cleaned up to
what you want then open your original database and use the intellamerge to
merge them together and it will merge all the duplicates that are the same.
To see how that works read the help file on intellamerge.
If you gave him your database in GEDCOM format then use Steve's suggestion.

If you've still got your original file, make that the main database.

Rename the other one to "Research", and start checking. You can give records
tags for "OK", "Need more checking" "Dubious" and "Wrong".

Export the OK ones to a Gedcom and import them into the main file, then work
through the ones that need further checking, and see what you can use.
Export
them and move them.

Leave the other stuff in the research file, and add other new stuff to it
that may be doubtful -- Gedcoms you receive from other people etc.

The correct way to remove children from a parent is to have the parents in
family view with the parent you want the childe removed from highlighted,
then right click the child in the children list and choose Unlink from

Recently for some unknown reason all of the living people in my database are
set to deceased (no death information is entered for them) whereas before they

Does anyone know how I can fix this easier? I cannot find a setting to revert

keep the report (I’m using the Descendant Book Report at the moment) from

couldn’t find anything, but maybe I didn’t use the right search terminology.

For instance, my parents are in this situation. When I print a Descendant Book

It seems redundant and wastes ink and paper to completely re-print a page of

This means that the fdb file is being accessed from inside the zip backup file
which is in the Dropbox. You will have problems with that. Like Mike said,
you should use Restore Family File inside of Legacy to unzip the backup data
files and place them into the correct location. Later when you backup again,
you can point the backup zip files at the Dropbox. It is just the restore that
you are missing. As Mike said, don't use the Windows unzip program but use the
restore function inside of Legacy.

For the person showing 2 marriages the one to unlink would be the one that has

You are wrong on this part! It is a Deluxe feature of both version 7.5 and v8
where you can record the results of several different types of DNA tests. You
get to it from the individual edit screen and click on the DNA icon on the
right side of the screen below the Options button in 7.5 and below the Share
button in v 8.

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] How best to keep track

There's essentially no place in Legacy 7.5 to record DNA data, but present
major databases may be unavailable to my grandson (example Ancestry yDNA).
Fields for Placeholders could perhaps be repurposed for much or all of that,
notably aiding atDNA application to conventional genealogy search for
connections. Longitudinal study seems helped by the Placeholder approach in
the time domain of Heraldry, for both research and record, regarding STR yDNA,
with SNP data newly a factor. For deeper genealogy, my grandson, a Britton,
may want to know if he is Brythonic or got his surname some other way, and how
he came to Britain from Adam in Africa while his mtDNA came here eastwards.
Placeholders for that get to be rather long-lived, and time works backwards
BCE.

Again, this is not what Legacy was designed for, but Millenium must be aware of
increasing interest in such, so has a choice to limit Legacy to classic
genealogy, modify it in a future version, or to produce, or link with, a
companion. Whatever choice, it may be useful for both Millenium and the
community to experiment with Legacy's current flexibility to illuminate this
area. DNA is not going away, and we certainly need something better to
preserve and communicate with than Gedcoms are now for classic genealogy. If
the Millenium choice is to ignore DNA, then a clear statement to that effect
would keep posts like this off the List, especially if words to that effect
were added to the Legacy User Group Guidelines.

move several volunteer projects, that I'm working on for the NJ
Maritime Museum, into V8. They are not related people so I have them
 in separate files.
They are actually people on ships wrecked off the coast of NJ. How can
I move my source templates (I don't use source writer) from one
project to another without having to re-enter them all?
I've tried a split screen, which works, but it's very time consuming
and this is all done as a volunteer. I hope there is a faster way.
Also considered running all the names as one project but that didn't
 seem appropriate.
 Any suggestions?

Re: [LegacyUG] Stuck in endless relink loop-----was: Recovering after crash

2014-08-10 Thread R G Strong-genes
Whenever you unzip the mediazipped file you must extract it to the C: drive or
the drive they were originally in and not a folder in the C: drive as the zip
file contains the path of the file and will restore it to those same folders.
If you were to unzip or “extract” them to a folder on the drive then it will
add the original folder names to that folder as subfolders. This is probably
why the program is not finding them as now they are in a different path. If
this is what has happened then just go to the folder you unzipped it to and
drag those subfolders to the root C: drive or the original drive.
Hope that helps, sorry you are having so much trouble with this.

Continuing... I aborted the program with Task Manager.
I re-restored the database.
I checked and the images were in the default v8 folder; i.e., under My
Documents ... Media
The program still cannot find the images.
I ran Relink and it looked for the first image. It found one, but the way
the words on the screen read to me, it was asking me about a file in the OLD
default location (under Program Files ... Pictures). Is the wording just
confusing? I don't even have the Legacy folder anymore, let alone a Pictures
folder.
I realize I sound helpless... perhaps it's just too late to be working on this
task?
Thanks!

HELP! I'm caught in an endless relink and gather loop...!

I've finally recovered my more urgent apps, so I'm recovering Legacy now.
I downloaded v8 and installed it.
After one aborted restore (it restored the database on my external drive where
the backup file resides),
I copied the backup file and the media backup file to the C:\My
Documents\Legacy Family Tree folder... database into \Data and media into
\Media.
I used Legacy 8 to restore the database... perfect.
I then tried a few times to unzip (same as extract all, right??).
A few surprise folders appeared... like the old C:\program files\Legacy
structure.
Eventually, I just moved the entire \Pictures folder (all my image files were
there) in under the Legacy Family Tree folder renamed it \Media -- that
unzipping always confuses me... why doesn't it just put the unzipped files into
the same folder where the zipped file resides? I digress.
I checked Options (Customize) and Legacy was looking for the files there...
\Media
I ran Relink and it relinked 1019 files, which sounded about right. (Why did
it feel it had to search my whole computer, though? All the files were right
there in the default folder...??)
However, the images weren't relinked at all. I tried pull one up and Legacy
couldn't find it. So, what did it link???
Sooo, I thought maybe I'm supposed to Gather them now??
I tried that, and then it got confusing... I didn't like clicking yes for
Legacy to MOVE the files, but I figured it would just find them all where they
were since that's where they should be per the default folder designation.
I honestly don't know how many times I've clicked the relink because it seems
to be coming up for every stinking image file in the gather process. Is this
right?
What's worse: It doesn't stop--I can't exit out!

Can you please help me? I'm stuck in this endless loop cant' even close
Legacy to start over.
Seriously, though, if the files are all in the default folder, why is the
program having so much trouble?
Thanks in advance,
--Paula

Customer numbers are version specific. Contact sa...@legacyfamilytree.com or
supp...@legacyfamilytree.com to confirm your customer number and which version
you have last purchased.

There's no need to install v7.5 before installing v8. Just install the most
recent build from our website. www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/DownloadLegacy.asp.

After installing Legacy, go to File Restore to restore the data files. The
media files need to be unzipped using the default program in Windows.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Quality questions

Yes, The document itself is original, however, the fact of her birth you would
have to go by who supplied the data for the birth date to determine if it is
Primary or Secondary evidence. If the provider of the info was not your
grandmother or her parents then the data is not Primary source.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Source Quality questions

I'm working on a very focused research project, just one question, and doing it
the right way per two recent Legacy webinars the Geneal. Stds. book, to
test out some of the new v8 functionality--namely Source Quality analysis on
the Source Detail citations. See how it works for this one person, then update
the rest of my folks.

Research question is When was my grandmother born?
One document I have is the original Certificate of Registration of American
Citizens, which lists my grandmother's birth date (among other things).
When entering the citation for her birth date, I was puzzled on the first
Source Quality item:

Source - Original, Derivative, Authored or IDK.

At first I put IDK, because this document is not her birth certificate--not the
first documentation of her birth date, and it's not a derivative as Legacy
describes it on the screen or authored either.
Now I'm thinking I may have over-thought that.

It IS the original (not even a photo copy) of this certificate--even if the
purpose of this document/certificate is not to record her birth date (at least
not only).
So, I would indicate original in Legacy, right?

Thanks!

Ray,

I understand you are using Legacy 8 and have installed it on both computers
from a disc. It sounds as if you have updated the program on the desktop but
you haven't updated it on the laptop.
Therefore when you try to open your family file on the laptop, you are
getting a message saying you need a later build.
Update the program on the laptop (either from the Home Tab OR by downloading
the Standard version from the website and running it) and your problem
should be over.
Note although you download the Standard Free version from the website, it is
the same installation file for the Deluxe. The difference is that the
Customer Number unlocks more features.

I'm not sure why people were telling you to install Legacy 7. Confused I
think by you saying that both computers were running Windows 7.

If you have the Deluxe version, you can use the Tool - Advanced Set

The Advanced Set Living tool is one of those to run periodically. It

is concerned, if the files use the same sources then it should point to the
same source if not then you probably will have to update those file ID fields
with the correct info. It all depends on your filing system that you are using.

Question. If you use that procedure what happens to your source citations?

I use CLOOZ and my sources are numbered and the number placed in the Detail
screen; File ID field of Legacy. Each family would have a Birth 001, Birth 002
etc. I'm assuming each item would have to be hand re-numbered?

Re: [LegacyUG] [1][1][1]....????

2014-05-22 Thread R G Strong-genes
Elizabeth,
Be aware that if you have attached any media to your family file that those
images are in a different zip file that has the family file name-media in
the zip file name. So you would have to send them that file also and they
would have to Extract those files to their C: drive, as legacy stores the
directory path name with the file. So if you have your images in subfolders
to your main image folder then it will create those directories if they do
not exist on their drive (that is why it is better not to store images that
you use for Legacy in the my pictures folder that windows creates as the
path to my documents and my pictures folders are unique to your user name.)

If you do not care if they have the images to the file then just send the
one zip file. All of this info can be found in the help files under Sharing
family file topic

Elizabeth,
No question is silly if you don't know the answer.

It doesn't matter where they save the zip file so long as they can
navigate to it with the Legacy File Restore dialogue. So they have to
know WHERE it is but it doesn't matter where it is.

They should choose a sensible place to save the restored file - like
C:\Legacy\Data which is the default folder for Legacy 7.5. That it's the
default folder doesn't necessarily mean saving in that folder is
automatic. Remind them to look at where the file is going to be saved
before clicking the Save button. Different versions of windows have
slightly different layouts for this dialogue but they all include an
address bar of some sort showing where the file will be saved and the
means for changing this place.

One final (I hope) silly question, but I want to make sure I do this
 correctly...

When they receive the .zip file, should they save it to the
 C:/Legacy/Data file or to the C:/Legacy/Backups file..or doesn't
it matter where they save it?

Re: [LegacyUG] How do I find a specific Event ID #?

2014-05-20 Thread R G Strong-genes
Heeren,
The easiest way to fix it is to go to the View tab, Master Lists and pick the
Event Definition from the list. In the list you will find Fix this Event Type
highlight that in the list and then click the button Show List to see who has
the event so you can jog your memory of what the event is.

As for the Tagging if you have the Deluxe version you can display any three
tags you wish. Go to the Advanced Taging screen Cntrl-T and change which tags
to show on the Name list in the lower right hand corner there is a button to do
this.

Subject: [LegacyUG] How do I find a specific Event ID #?

I have spent most of the day working on a problem in Legacy 8.0.0.427.

It started with the discussion here about unlinking disproved people/lines.
Which made me think that I would really like to have the program put some kind
of color/letter/designation of some kind next to people that you unlink since
they show up in the Name List when you are looking to see if someone you just
found is already in your file it would let you know which ones are in or out.

Made the suggestion. Was told how to do it with tagging.

Did the tagging, using tag#4 only to discover that only the first 3 tags show
on the Name List...I knew that...

So...cleared out tag#2, tagged the unlinked people with #2, listed them again
went to each one to click on tag#4 to remove it.

EXCEPT...I came to my 6th Great Grandparents...they are unlinked. My 5th
G-Grandmother is shown as their daughter, she shows them as her parents. The
have a marriage date, they are shown as married...BUT...he is listed as my 6th
G-Grandfather but she has no relationship shown at all and they come up as
unlinked.

So, I started delving into that when I realized that first I should do a
Check/Repair of the file since a new update was added just days ago.

Did that...I coming to it...have patience...

The first item in the Error.Log says:

There are 1 Event Name record (s) referred to that have a blank event name.

We have added a new Event Definition '!Fix this Event Type-1' and the following
records now point to this new Event Definition. From the Master Event
Definition List you can edit this record and change it to the correct value.

Event ID=5295, Event Definition Name=, Event Location=, Event Desc=. The Event
Definition Name is now '!Fix this Event Type-1'

I know I'm getting old and am aging even faster today but, would some kind soul
please tell me how to find Event ID 5295? None of the searches I have turned
up seem to work with event numbers.

Thank you for your patience,
Sally

Adobe Acrobat Reader is a freebie but only allows you to view and read PDFs. I
still find it strange why Legacy could not open your PDF files using your old
Acrobat v5.x yet you could open them directly from Windows. Oh well, maybe the
new installation configured things properly.

On a side note, can anybody tell me if Legacy v8 updated it’s PDF writer or is
it still creating PDFs in a very old format (which seems to work for most
purposes)?

When I checked on updated on Acrobat 10 it told me there were no updates. After
your remark I checked the net and found XI - downloaded it and he presto all is
back to normal. Everything is opening in Adobe XI on my files and in Legacy!

In answer to your comment concerning right clicking - all of the files could be
right clicked and could all be opened with Wrier 5 - it was only when I tried
to open them in Legacy did it become a problem.

Thank you for letting me know about the update - I have it ticked to let me

there were an updates even in the Help section!

All seems sorted for present - thank you for your time in assisting - it is

The current version of Adobe Acrobat (the full program, not Acrobat Reader) is
version 11. You apparently have an old version 5. Depending upon how the .PDF

can open one of the new .PDF files. For example, if I create a new PDF in
Acrobat 11 and allow for backward compatibility only to version 9, you MAY not
be able to open the file. However, my brain cells are telling me that you
should get a warning or error message about version incompatibility rather than
an error message about a damaged file. I believe that Adobe was smart in that
regard but I really don’t know about Acrobat v5.x. If you were to download and
use any one of the freebie or shareware PDF writer programs, maybe that would
solve your problem.

In Legacy 7. 5, the internal PDF creator will create a PDF file which is an
older Acrobat 3.x version. The engine and code used is under a license
agreement with ComponentOne PDF Generator. So far I have had no difficulty
opening any of the Legacy created PDFs with Acrobat 11 but I suspect that no
special features are being used in the Legacy created PDF which could possibly
cause a version incompatibility. The only problem I’ve seen with the Legacy
created PDFs is the bloated file size. I usually open the Legacy created PDF in
Acrobat 11 and then resave as a reduced file size which typically results in a
reduction of around one-third the original file size.

Oh, in re-reading your message, you might try this. Go back to the folder where
the PDF resides and instead of double clicking on the file or icon which you
have set to automatically open with the Acrobat READER program, try right
clicking on the file and select OPEN WITH… If your Acrobat Writer 5.0 program
does not appear in a list of possible programs that Windows is suggesting, you
may have to browse to the Program Files folder to locate the Acrobat executable.

Small problem. I have Adobe Acrobat Writer 5 and Acrobat Reader 10. I only use

Default for pdf's is set as Adobe Reader (10).

When the pdf's are on my Desktop or anywhere in the computer, including in the

automatically open with Adobe Reader (10).

When I attach them to the person concerned via the Media Gallery and try to
open them from there they open in Adobe Acrobat Writer (5) which opens a

could not be repaired:.

I cannot stop it opening with the Writer (5) if I go back to the Folder itself
it still opens correctly with Reader (10).

I have run a File Maintenance but nothing changed.

Help, suggestions please - I cannot find anything in the Help files so far.

I am using Windows 7 and Legacy De Luxe 8.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Report questions.

Hello all,

I have two report questions.

The solution, I think is just putting it in the clipboard and stamping
over the older stuff. That's fine, but the problem is how can I get a
Source Detail report to see which ones I need to fix?

Go to Reports menuOther Tabunder Miscellaneous Reports click link Source
Citations and then tick what you want to Include and check the Options tab
for other options for the report.

The second question is a location and time thing. Is there a way to
find who all lived in a certain place at a certain time? Let's say I'm
looking for anyone that lived in Texas in 1830. How would I search for
that? It could be birth, or death, or marriage or residence or
anything. They just have to be in Texas in 1930. I was hoping to find
a location timeline but I don't see anything like that.

This one may be a bit tricky but you could try finding all people that have
a date for 1830:

open Search Look for whom=Individual, Where to look= Any Date, How to
look=Contains, What to look for=1830
tick Second Condition Or Look for whom?=Marriage, Where to look=Marriage
Date, How to look=Contains, What to look for=1830
un-tick third conditions
Clear List before this search
Create List

for the next one you need to have an empty tag number
go to Advanced Tagging and under Advanced Tagging tic Tag Make changes on #
choose a tag number then Click on Everyone in Search list.

Next
Look for whom?=Individual, Where to look=Tag # that you used above, How to
look=Equal To, What to look for=Tagged
Second Condition And
Individual, Birth Place, contains, Texas
Third Condition Or
Individual, Death Place,contains, Texas

Clear List before this search
Create List

if the list contains any individuals without the tag you selected then don't
use the Third condition and rerun the search
if that was not the case and they all had the tag number you assigned then
you will now need to do another search but this time
you will be adding the results to Existing List and changing the second and
third conditions
if you had to not do a third condition then you will have to do extra
searches to find the place fields that were missed without the third
condition so..

Second condition and
IndividualChr PlacecontainsTexas
Third Condition Or
IndividualBurial PlaceContainsTexas
tic Add results to existing List
Create List

next
Second condition And
IndividualEvent PlacecontainsTexas
Third Condition Or
MarriageMarriage PlacecontainsTexas
Add results to existing List
Create List

and the last place to check would be MarriageMarr.
Event-PlacecontainsTexas

again add to existing List and create list. I think you may have to not do
the Third condition for all of the searches as it may select those you don't
want so it may be better to have only the primary being the tag # and the
2nd condition the place you want to find from all of those that I entered
above.
Once you have searched all the place fields for the above criterion then go
to the advanced tagging and choose another tag to tag everyone in search
list or if you do not have another tag available you can untag everyone with
the one you used before and then Tag Everyone in Search List with the one
you just cleared.
Now you have the people you want with the tag you want. While the Advanced
Tagging screen is open you can put a description in the tag number so when
you scroll over the tag number it will remind you of what is used for.

hope this helps

Re: [LegacyUG] Bad job of installing

2014-04-05 Thread R G Strong-genes
Jane,
When you open your family file, what name shows at the top of your screen in
the windows title bar? It should say Legacy - [name of family file]. If it
says Legacy Another Format 1-19-14 2014 then that is why all your backups
say that. To fix it go to the File tab and click on Rename File and rename
your family file to what you want. Now on that same tab click on Backup File
and when the Backup window opens click on the Options button on the bottom
of the screen and there will be two boxes you can check, first one is to
append the date to the end of the backup file name and the other box is to
Append the time to the end of the file name. You can have any combination of
boxes checked. If all of your backups have the same name then I would assume
that both of those boxes are unchecked. After that you should be good to go.
If you have backed up the media then those also probably are saved as the
name above with a -media at the end of the file name. If you wish to keep
your old backups you could rename the part of the old file name and change
that part to the new file name.

Now I find that my backups all are saved under the title, Legacy

backups saved on March 23 that still say the January date. And I can't
tell one from the other - there are several in my Legacy Backup folder
all of the same name. And in the Backup Options box I tried to change
the name of the backup to Main Family File . but it still says the

This is a grand mess and I am sorry I ever left V. 7.

How can I get started straightening this out. I have no idea how much

Re: [LegacyUG] Restoring picture links

2014-04-03 Thread R G Strong-genes
Morris,
All the media file backup will do is restore the media to their original
location it will not restore the links in the family file. The easiest way
would be to save your current file with a different name or save it as a copy
with a different name and then restore your family file from the backup that
has the links. After it has been restored to the point before you deleted the
links go to the copy of your family file then search for those individuals that
you changed: search for individual what to look for” change date equal to a
date after the point of your last backup then tag the search list. You can then
export all the tagged individuals to a new file or import only the tagged
individuals into your current file.

Re: [LegacyUG] ISO labor-lite suggestions re tagging

2014-04-01 Thread R G Strong-genes
Cheryl,
If you did not assign a source to those individuals you keyed in then there
is no way of doing what you are asking other then to do the page by page
look up. However, if you did assign a source then you could just tag all
those individuals or marriages that are assigned that master source. Once
you have done that, then you could do an advanced search:
What to searchindividual
how to search not equal to which ever tag you assigned to the ones that
had the source.

That should give you a list of those that you didn't source the book. You
could then assign them a different tag number that you can then look them up
to see if they are in the book or not.

Database/familyfile of ~15,000 persons and 5100 marriages.
ORIGINALLY created by keying in the contents of a genealogy
book. First done in PAF5, then ported to Legacy 7 and then
to 8.

Everyone in the book ought to be in the db/ff.
Unfortunately, while documenting those people, I've added
people who should have been in the book but aren't
(siblings, children, parents).

It's too late to tell me I should've thought of this sooner,
so we can skip that part of the class.

I need a *quick* way to tag maybe 25% in the db/ff who
aren't in the book.

I /can/ hypothetically sit here with the book in one hand
and page through it again finding and tagging those people.
I suspect the Galaxy will atrophy before I could finish
that because apparently I have to have the person in the
primary position to click a tag. 5 marriages took close to
2 hours.

I considered the tag family, but that'll end up tagging
everyone, including a sibling and descendants who aren't in
the book.

I can find /some/ by the omission of the import source. That
won't help the ones added prior to moving it into Legacy.
Ideas welcomed here.

general information...

  1) This database was originally a combination of records from Joseph Winget,
Julia Seagrave, and Lawrence Regan as of 21 Aug 2004.
  2) Spouses who married more than once have marriage source Duplicate
Marriage in database.
  3) Members of the Winget Family Association have source WFA Member.
  4) Dates like Cal 1905 are calculated from evidence versus Abt 1905 which
are estimated.
  5) LDS Blessings are entered as event LDS Blessing and not entered in the
christening fields.
  6) All group sheets connected to the direct line should be complete including
parents of husband and wife, all children, and spouses of children.

There could be more that the compiler wants to document about the database.
A generic source record might be created but it would have to be linked to some
individual to avoid it being purged as an unused source.

Thanks again to all.

Renaming the Legacyx.lic file does the trick. But a few clarifying notes:

Windows7, 32-bit and 64-bit for Legacy7: The Legacy7.lic file is in the folder
C:\Program Files\Legacy\

Widows7, 32-bit for Legacy 8: The Legacy8.lic file is in the folder C:\Program
Files\Legacy\
Windows7, 64-bit for Legacy 8: The Legacy8.lic file is in the folder
C:\Users\UserName\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData

These values are based on default installation paths.

The answer to reverting Deluxe to Standard is
simple on the one hand and complex on the other.

The simple answer. Delete or move your
  Legacy8.lic file found in Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData

  The complex answer.
It was possible to install Legacy 7 more than
once on the same computer for the same user by 1)
Renaming the installation file to LegacyNew.exe
and then choosing a different folder to install to.
This was possible because the user settings were
kept in the Program Folder - which is why on
later versions of Windows, Legacy 7 could not be
installed to the Windows Programs Folder.

Legacy 8 is different. Legacy 8 by default is
installed to the Windows Program Folder.
The Legacy 8 user settings are not kept in the
Program folder but in ...username/Documents/Legacy Family Tree/_AppData

The result is that even if you rename the
installation folder as LegacyNew.exe and choose
to install it into a different folder, the USER
SETTINGS are STILL in the same folder - so it
will open knowing your deluxe status and your preferred family file etc etc.

So, you can have ANOTHER user account on your
computer and switch to that to run the same
installation of Legacy with different settings.
Two people who use the same computer but sign in
with different user accounts can have completely
different settings for Legacy 8 though Legacy 8
has only been installed once on the computer.

Or you can just delete, move or rename the
Legacy8.lic file to revert to standard. Renaming
it is probably the easiest. You need to close and reopen Legacy.

Note that beta testers can switch on and off the
Deluxe version of the program while within the
program but it isn't envisaged that ordinary users would want to do that.

Bring up the source you want to use but alter. Click Edit over on the right
side. Make the changes you need. Now click Save. Make sure that you
select 2. APPLY THE CHANGES TO A NEW COPY OF THIS MASTER SOURCE.

You don't want to accidentally pick the first option or you will overwrite
the one you already have and then you will have a mess.

Make sure that you don't forget to change the NAME of the source too.

Graham,

Thank you. I considered this approach.

My concern is;

If I take a couple of photos of a monument, say to get a closer shot of each
spouse, do I end up having a bunch of sources, say Pic01.jpg, Pic02.jpg, and
Pic03.jpg? Are individual photos my sources, or is the collection of photos
gathered together from one cemetery trip and stored together (digitally) my
source?

If I went this route, I would cite my source as a photo album of tombstone
photos and have a photo album for each cemetery. That is how I store them now.

My hierarchy on my storage drive is Country - State - County - City - Cemetery
Name - Date

I believe that photos are just a method of transcription. They can limit some
types of errors.

Thanks,

Slightly tongue in cheek but my favourite quote at the moment is from Geoff -

that should be the source and the source detail self evident. Cemetery burial

Subject: [LegacyUG] Question - Cemetery or Tombstone as the source?

Hello,

I photograph during cemetery trips and use the images as a source without
transcription.

I'm planning on listing the cemetery as the source, and record tombstone
details as the various source details.

Are there pros and cons to doing it this way? Would like some comments before
I start.

Thanks,

Ted

Re: [LegacyUG] Question - Cemetery or Tombstone as the source?

2014-03-10 Thread R G Strong-genes
Ted,
That should be the preferred way of doing it. I have this for one of my master
sources:

Using Source Writer template Cemetery recordsGrave markers, plaques,
tombstones, monumental inscriptionsGrave markers, urban or the rural

Michigan, St. Joseph, Constantine - Constantine Township Cemetery Headstones

Footnote/Endnote Citation:
Constantine Township Cemetery (Constantine, Saint Joseph County, Michigan).

Subsequent Citation:
Constantine Township Cemetery (Constantine, Michigan).

Bibliography:
Constantine Township Cemetery (Constantine, Saint Joseph County, Michigan).
Grave markers.

I create a repository for the cemetery and use that as the repository of the
source. If you have an image of the cemetery or map of the cemetery you can ad
that image in the repository screen also.

this is how the citation reads for an individual Ray H. Wing:

Footnote/Endnote Citation:
Constantine Township Cemetery (Constantine, Saint Joseph County, Michigan), Ray
H. Wing marker; personally read, 5 Sep 2011;
Phil. 1:21 Wing
Kittie C.Ray H.
1893-1968 1892-1969
For me to live is christ and to die is gain.

Subsequent Citation:
Constantine Township Cemetery (Constantine, Michigan), Ray H. Wing marker.

Bibliography:
Constantine Township Cemetery (Constantine, Saint Joseph County, Michigan).
Grave markers.

FYI
I put the transcription in the Text area with a blank line as the first line so
that there is a carriage return after the semi colon otherwise the first line
appears right after it. I would put any other special info like the condition
of the grave marker in the Comment section.

Re: [LegacyUG] Duplicate ID Numbers Software Problem?

2014-03-07 Thread R G Strong-genes
Jay,
If you are referring to the User ID field. There is no software problem with
that field. That field is not a number field but is a text field and can
have any data in it you designate. The only numbers that should not have
duplicates are the RIN and MRIN which are assigned automatically by the
database.

User ID

This field is for any reference number you want to record for this
individual. You can use any combination of letters, numbers and punctuation
marks. There is a tool on the Options Customize Other tab where you can
automatically fill the User ID fields for all individuals with the RIN
numbers and optional text.

If you use the ID Number field in Legacy, have you tried a search for
duplicate ID numbers?

Go to; My Toolbar, Merge, Find Duplicates, Special Duplicates Search,
Find duplicates using only User ID number, Continue.

I ran the search for duplicate ID numbers and found 57, 416 duplicate ID
numbers per the Legacy version 8 software. I have ran it in the past
with previous versions of Legacy and did not find many. When I go to the
Name List, I only have 66,194 people in my database!

I do have duplicate ID numbers starting with B, because I imported
data long ago for Ingalls listed in Burleigh's 1903 book on the Ingalls.
The researcher who added the data to her genealogy program added ID
numbers starting with B for Burleigh to indicate the number came from
his book. The book was published in 1903, so many of the individuals she
added to her data are descendants of some one in his book. She handled
that by using the number for the last ancestor listed in Burleigh plus a
dash number indicating the number of generations an individual is
removed from B1. So, there can be many descendants with the same ID
number such as B1222-10.

I did a search for ID numbers starting with B and found 3,948 People
with ID Numbers starting with B. Not all of them are duplicates!

I did a fairly extensive audit of all my ID numbers and found very few
identical ID Numbers, except for the Burleigh numbers. Looks to me like
there is a software problem.

All options were global in Legacy 7 and earlier. I can not find a good reason
why some settings are now only effective for each family file. When I select
certain settings, I want those to apply to every database that I open so that I
see the same effect with each one. It is frustrating to get the settings just
right and then open another database only to find that the preferred settings
are not still set.

Is there at least a method of copying all settings for one database such that
they will be the same for another database? Please describe how that might be
done with Legacy 8. Even with an Export to new Legacy Family File the
settings from the source file are not effective in the exported file.

Another possibility would be to have a table of the settings where the user
could determine which ones should be global and which should be family file
linked instead of having it hard-coded in the program.

to see who this was (it's probably a mistake) so I clicked on that line
and then clicked on Create Search List, selecting the option to create a
new list, but the result was the list (one person) that resulted from
the last Search I'd done this morning.

Further investigations showed that selecting any line and asking for a
Search List did not work - the existing Search List is all that's displayed.

Can others confirm this behaviour? If so, I will report it as a bug.

When you have an empty slot, clicking there returns add or link to a child,

When you have set the display for full screen, 6 children can be added, but
with partial screen selected you only get 5 per column.

The option I have set is best fit.

With 5 children the column is full and there is no option to add another
child. If I right click on the plus sign I do get the option to add or
link an existing son or daughter.

Right clicking on the plus sign does work to link another child. I now
have 2 columns of children.

Thanks,

Re: [LegacyUG] Editing marriage definition glitch?

The problem is that you have that event in the Individuals events so you
cannot use the [CoupleNames] in an individual event. If the person was
married more than once how would it know which couple, that is why it is a
marriage event and should be an event in the marriage screen.

I have the exactly the same event entered as an event for the Husband,
wife and Marriage event.
The marriage event is as it should be, on screen and in reports.
 Sentence definition:
[CoupleNames] have a [EventName] dated [onDate], residing at [Place].

In the husband and wife's event sentence on screen, read, a ? where
there should be a name.
In reports it lists the individuals name and not the spouse.

The readout I get is Thomas Brown have a Marriage Certificate dated

 These are the event notes.¹
Does this text appear in Reports or on the Edit Event screen? If it
does, then it is a bug.

But I think you might find it is only showing in the Sentence Preview

pieces of text have been used for all the Sentences' previews, I think.

Legacy 7 did not have this preview slot at the bottom of that screen and
I actually think it is a bit confusing rather than helpful.

If you wish to exclude the media links then you need to EXCLUDE them from the
GEDCOM. On the GEDCOM Export screen click on the “Customize” button on the
right side of the screen. On the Items to Incude in GEDCOM for Legacy screen
there is a section called Groups of items to EXCLUDE from Export check the box
“Media Files” and any other stuff you don’t want in the GEDCOM file. When you
have it the way you want and before clicking OK, you might want to Save List to

No problem Hans, a gedcom is “only” a text file so pictures will not be
included. It will include the information about the picture, including the
link, title and notes, etc. that you have, but the actual pictures will not be
included. Note, as well, that [[double square brackets]] can be used to
exclude information, other than the link (I haven’t figured out if there is a

How do I open up the source clipboard to untick a box there also - AFAIK, I'm

This is the procedure:
(1) Select to Add a New (Basic) Source

Is this not happening to anyone else?

You can still do that in your notes! If you don't want them to appear in
reports then just surround them with the privacy brackets [[ some text ]]
and they will be visible in your file but will not appear in reports unless
you change the Privacy Options of the report. If you want the whole note
private just put the opening brackets and no closing brackets then
everything after them will be private.

see some sort of category such as is on the line of options under the

Some sort of option to list all the extraneous material one collects
when research a person. Then you could add all the notes relevant to
that person (but not planned to appear in your reports probably), but
for your own research information. It would be really nice to have all

The fact that it is a 3rd party product and not Legacy!
Ah! But it can replace all your scraps of paper until you consolidate
 and
organise them in a more permanent fashion. And it's free!

Re: [LegacyUG] Merging Sources

2014-01-21 Thread R G Strong-genes
If they use different templates then they cannot be merged you will have to
copy and paste the data that you want to appear in the correct source.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Merging Sources

I have recently discovered that I incorrectly used the wrong Source Template in
Source Writer and have several citations to that incorrect source. Therefore, I
have created a new correct source in the Master Source list. Can the referenced
incorrect Source in the Master Source list be merged with the correct source
and maintain all of its references? Everything that I have read in the help
files and the Legacy 8 manual refer to duplicates or sources that are exactly
the same. These two both use Source Writer templates, however, they are
different in that they use different source templates.

I am using the most recent version of Legacy 8 Deluxe. Any assistance would be
greatly appreciated.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy not backing up

2014-01-21 Thread R G Strong-genes
I have 385 and it prompted me for a backup after I changed some one. When I do
an update I see the skip file message also, which means that the file already
exists and doesn’t need to update.

I am using Build 385. The program has not been doing backups, either on
request (File backup file) or when I exit the program after having made
changes. All the usual checks have been made including rebooting. I also
initially had this same problem with Build 367.
The solution is to reinstall the current version over itself.
If you watch the process closely you will see that it skips most of the files
but that it slows to copy several files. Does this mean that the initial
installation from the legacy8setup.exe file is not properly installing the
whole program? This may be worth a follow up from Support.
If your program shuts down without the delay to do the backup, check that your
last backup is dated and timed the same as your last .fdb file.
